I freaking hate politics right now. There is no place for views that aren't hard-left or hard-right. There is no desire for dialog. Most people in reality are not perfect ideological stereotypes. But in spite of that, I see more and more of my online acquaintances falling into line with these sterotypes. Being part of the left leaning FOSS community, usually this means presenting as far left revolutionaries. It is resulting in the split of communities and ejection of good faith participants.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@soller The entire idea of "left" or "right" seems mind boggling to me. It causes so much tribalism without reason. Drama about seemingly pointless things just because person x is apparently connected group y.

Anyone know if there's a good alternative for Flameshot that works well with Wayland?

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Grim (screenshot),Slurp (region selection) ,Satty (annotations)

With this combination you can choose whether or not to annotate. i think it's pretty neat.

I would like to know what y'all thought of the Hyprland video, if you watched it!

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@niccolove Generally quite good, you did well not to immediately draw conclusions and to avoid definite statements. Perhaps it was a bit short with some things glossed over but you also can't cover everything.
The only thing I took some issue with is the moderation thing. It's a small team and they are volunteers just like you with KDE.
They can't find every message and completely shut down every derogatory comment.

My #Wayland experiment is over.

I'm going back to Xorg. At least until there's a Window Manager/Portal combination that works well enough for my use case. #Hyperland is close, but close isn't close enough for a production system.

It's finally the day. I've worked on this video for a month. Countless hours went into it. I can't wait for y'all to see it.

It premieres today, 10pm UTC, or 4pm Central. On Youtube. I would love to have you there, it's going to be a wild trip.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@niccolove I saw his stream with brodie, he was already extremely toxic on there, never letting anyone talk freely and always enforcing his view. So the connection to anti-science bs like antivax, climate change denial etc is quite fitting.

Overall sad to see such a figure turn out like this but yeah, we move on.

Well done on the video btw! I like the fact that you kept the professional tone and did not lash out.

kdenlive really doesn't like wayland.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast QT5 doesn't like wayland in general sadly. QT6 is overall quite good in terms of waylans compliance, but obviously not every application can just upgrade toolkits, especially complex software. >> gimp as an example.

Whenever I see comments like this about I always have to ask, who do you think would be developing this new protocol? Every single graphics developers agrees that Wayland is where we're going, the problem is nobody agrees on how it should look

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrodieOnLinux @thelinuxcast I can only think of something like Regolith: https://regolith-linux.org/

All twms on x11 or compositors need a lot of configuration and tinkering.

thelinuxcast, to random
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

Wayland is such garbage. You get one problem fixed and another pops up, it's whack-a-mole. Finally got the monitors to switch off (even if they pop back on), and now OBS screen capture is broken again. FFS.

I don't even know why I keep trying.

BrodieOnLinux, to GNOME
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

Here's why absolutely should drop Xorg support, GNOME is the default desktop for , , and these are very popular distros for business use, this is the kick in the balls needs to fix the drivers, business partners won't take NVIDIA's shit for long.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrodieOnLinux It is also a wakeup call for some applications (steam for example) to finally support wayland.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@BrodieOnLinux I kinda doubt that, but even then, KDE is also moving in that direction, just "not yet"TM.

Matrix has 0 chance of unseating Discord if they have no good clients. Element is bad, Cinny is okay but lacks features, and the terminal clients aren't full-featured either.

gurristech, (edited )
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Matrix is a fantastic idea and base, but it's held back by ridiculous corporate decisions.
Simple things that nearly every competition has, have been in limbo for years with multiple PRs ignored and left aside.

I have personally tried to contribute and it has been the worst experience ever.
All love to the devs(they have always been nice and helpful) , but the product review team is understaffed and the corporate policies are just horrible.

Related to my latest video: people pointed out that Visual Studio is a major IDE missing from Linux, but available on Windows and macOS. Well, macOS is losing it as well, Microsoft just announced they would discontinue it for Apple’s OS.

I guess they won’t bring it to Linux any time soon, then (especially since they would argue that you can use Linux using WSL, and run Visual Studio on Windows at the same time)…

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxEXP Honestly, yet to find someone that legit uses it. Most people either use Jetbrains stuff, or vscode.

The only thing in your video I would change is the part about C#, it is absolutely fine on linux.

[Popular channel] never re-reviewed Pop after considerable work was done to permanently prevent the issue they encountered. Their video is still a significant drain on the reputation of Pop, with little follow-up of how seriously and quickly we address issues such as these.

It seems that we were not the only ones treated this way.

gurristech,

The Plasma guys can't ship something in an LTS version of KDE and not expect some criticism if it's bad. Some people in the comments of my video think that just because the tiling in Plasma is first gen, I should have given them a pass.

And I will admit, as I said in the video, that my looking at it expecting more tiling window manager features was unfair. Still what they have isn't good. I don't think saying that is taking away from their hard work.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast They called it tiling, therefore it's evaluated as tiling.
Not to mention this was partially why bismuth development stopped.

From the way it works, it's obvious that it does not try to be a twm, so they should just name it differently.

I will just barge in here.

Flatpak is nice, but definitely still has stuff to improve on, cli usage is still pain, QT themes are not quite there yet (no adwaita qt bridge), development apps like vscode and other IDEs are a pain with flatpak.

Personally I think that flatpak is a great addition to system packages, as it gives you easy access to otherwise unavailable apps -> for example spotify.

For now flatpak still has some things to iron out though.

Swayidle which is apparently the only good way to get your monitors to turn off on hyprland, will only turn one monitor off. I've never seen that happen before.

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Just turning monitors off or are you looking for a lock/suspend as well ?

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Mhh alright, not something I used before. I just lock it with swaylock, that works alright, but I can see where the problem is with this.
Hyprland does it's monitor config differently and it is imo the weakest part about hyprland -> for example, it also doesn't like having no monitor active

gurristech,
@gurristech@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I hope you like the rest of the compositor though, looking forward to a potential video about it :)
