Sunny morning in the hills today!

(Also, got a used Nokia 8.1 with Zeiss lenses, this is definitely not a potato!)

Looking up at an acacia tree lit by warm sun against blue sky with wispy clouds and a contrail cutting across the frame.

Chikoo cat has relapsed prolapsed rectum, the vet said two weeks ago to bring him in for surgery if this happens, so here we are, on our way to Dindigul at 4:30am, should reach by 9am.

It has rained a lot through the night, hope the car gets out of the slippery slope up the hill 😅

Temperature is 30°C indoors in an airy room today. All animals (including me) are feeling sluggish and just want to lie down. I'm ensuring everyone has cool water to drink nearby.

This is not normal in the hills, 26°C is about as hot as it used to get only a few years ago.

I shudder when I recall being passed out in a pool of sweat whole day when temps in plains rose to 45+°C in summer. It is getting worse there.

Half-tempted to build a private 'social network' between trusted people using SyncThing for connectivity and a GUI that uses the syncthing API to add/remove contacts + displays plain text files and media in a familiar way.

Does anything like this exist? I'm thinking SyncThing because it is by far the most reliable distributed and decentralized system I use.

Concern: each device has a different ID.
A solution: run single instance on a RasPi, use Tailscale to access it from anywhere.

Woken up at 04:00 by my dogs barking at something… likely a deer on the hill.

Noticed the night is clear, so set up the camera to shoot a timelapse of the home galaxy, as one normally does 😅

Now we wait.

After living remotely with only solar (+batteries) to power my home for past 5 years, I have greater appreciation for every watt that's spared - by hardware and software.

My workstation (Mac mini M1) and home server (ThinkCenter mini PC) use <30w between them. The Internet contraption with 4G router, PoE switch, and multiple APs uses another 20w. Laptop is <10w when charged.

Still 🤯 that my computing setup uses less power than an old 60w incandescent light bulb!

Riding towards Kodaikanal town and I'm shook. Much of the forest is now ashes. Forest guards are finally here with fire management teams, only took two weeks of raging fires to get their attention?

Sigh.

What's remaining is very much at risk until monsoons put an end to this rampage.

You could strip down a Windows XP install to well under 100MB. Losing the themes (and more) brought you back to the Win 98 look, but you got responsiveness in return.

When you're not sure what you're experiencing is mid life crisis or midwife crisis 😬 New baby cow didn't have milk for several hours, finally fed her mum's milk with a bottle.

She loves to cuddle already, and dozed off on my lap. Now indoors because it's getting cold with the evening.

Windy and rainy morning today. Getting ready to take 4 cats for "family planning" to the vet. Today's gonna be one long day followed by the longish week while they all recover.

Saw an Indian Gaur on the way from town today, excuse the potato quality photo, was taken with phone and cropped heavily.

It's rare to see them in the day, this one was a lone male happily grazing away. A family in car stopped nearby and I called them over to have a look, the gaur noticed us talking, gave this nice pose looking at us, then quietly vanished behind trees.

When a site takes a whole minute to load their javashit and presents you with a "Can't show you text because of GDPR" you can be sure they're a very slimy business.

As the wind dies down, the smoke from smoldering logs around the hill settles into the valley, forming a thick cloud. This is the 4th day we'll be breathing smoke all night. It clears up when wind picks up again in the day.

All because slash and burn agriculture is still a thing and humans are #&%§∆.

Strange.

My laptop running FreeBSD 14.0-R-p6 locked up during resume - it's been years since I had this issue. Power cycled it, and now my wireless device won't show up. I think I'm too tired to debug now, will look at it in the morning. Bummer though, hope it's not a hardware failure due to resetting the laptop while the wireless device was being initialised.
