If you have something to say and you're not posting on your blog, that's bad.

If you have little to say and you are posting on your blog, that's worse.

To put it another way, I don't really believe in conforming to a schedule or cadence for writing. When it comes, it comes.

@zachleat It's weird that we apply this, like, hustle energy to putting content on personal sites which doesn't make any money and largely isn't read.

The best part about this article is that the person who "dismisses these concerns" is called Scotty McKeever; a name that was surely created by generative AI.

Calling upon Walter Benjamin to help explain generative AI ick. Good article. http://perfors.net/blog/creation-ai/

This is sort of a subtoot but "most accessibility issues exist in the design stage" is an infuriating statement. Because it presupposes there isn't design in writing good code. Yes, contrast issues are probably more prevalent than any other, but that's not the point. Design isn't just colours and fonts.

A rare dip into Twitter, and worth it imho.

Big nostalgia flashback.

Decided to read Peter Pan because I never have - but I'm not sure I'll be reading it to my children because of a bunch of archaic stereotypes...

Anyway, suddenly realised though I never saw the Disney cartoon - there was a different TV series that I did see:

The term “cisgender” does not derive from “sissy” 😩. It derives from “Cisco AnyConnect” and yes: it is an insult.

Do people in accessibility who vaunt "inclusive AI" realise they are just doing PR?

Like, I honestly don't care if there's one or two specific uses of AI that might help someone vulnerable in some small way. You can use the barrel of a gun to prize open a drain cover and save a kitten.

The history of AI will be the history of an irresponsible tech obliterating accountability & eventually meaning itself. That won't be good for anyone. Stop using disabled people to will that into reality.

@aral I put a version of this post on LinkedIn. We'll see how that goes LOL.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@matt @danilo I don't agree at all. There is no baby. And also "well it's here now, fuck it" is not really any kind of argument.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@matt @danilo Who are "we"? Because these technologies are not publicly owned and are evasive of accountability. "We" are not going to make them decent, just, or any other epithet because we're not in control of them. And the people who are are arch capitalists LOL

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@matt @danilo Hypothetically, governments could try to legislate against the ills of LLMs or build "ethical" versions of them, but technology always outpaces governance and pandora's box has already been opened.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

People's optimism about AI and LLMs is astounding. "It's just a tool, you don't just believe everything it says". We live in a world where a picture of a Minion can convince people to vote for a fascist, come on.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@destructatron @danilo @matt @Lottie @pixelate You're missing the point that "guns don't kill people, people do" is a notoriously shit argument. That's the reason I brought it up.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@destructatron @danilo @matt @Lottie @pixelate "if used incorrectly" come on

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@matt @weirdwriter LLMs make information—real information—less accessible to everyone. Because they generate fake information that crowds out the real stuff.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@destructatron @danilo @matt @Lottie @pixelate This is still the same shit gun apologist argument. Guns make it EASIER to kill people. LLMs make it EASIER to spread disinformation and cheat real writers out of work (among a host of other issues). It's a net negative, no matter how you try to frame it.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@destructatron @danilo @matt @Lottie @pixelate You just described why LLMs are useless then stated they'll be overwhelmingly positive right afterwards. Case of technophilia?
