it is simply time for the world to admit that capitalism is a failed experiment that results in massive systemic oppression and inequity and banish its practice.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@djsundog It does that on purpose so I'm not sure about "failed"...

You can now get my “Capitalism is stealing...” design as a tote, so you can take it shopping and have people point and go “THEY SAY THEY ARE AGAINST CAPITALISM BUT HERE THEY ARE BUYING GOODS, MAKING THEM LITERALLY A CAPITALIST” https://webbed-briefs.teemill.com/product/capitalism-tote/

I've made my briefs.video Vimeo public for Webbed Briefs now, so you can like/share/save etc to your heart's content. Following is a thread of those videos.

Some people: "A native app is more my thing, please create one of these"
Other people: "Why not just make the website work well on small screens?"
Company: "We have listened and have put some functionality in a native app and kept some just for web, so you have to use both, often at the same time"

A lot of "centralization is good actually" and "federation is inherently discriminatory to <group I don't belong to but am speaking for>" around here at the moment

How much of this is FUD generated by Bluesky, Twitter and others? I'll wager a lot.

If you think "AI" "art" is as good as art generated directly by a human, you don't get art. The humanity is the whole point.

For conferences, I typically write a new talk each time. This means I have multiple talks I have only given once but would be happy to again. Let me know if you are interested in me speaking at your conference with:

 • The one where I talk about how capitalism is completely destroying the web (which certain civil servants were not allowed to see)
 • The one where I talk about the time I forced everyone to switch off JavaScript to view my website (in which I may confuse JavaScript with Covid)

Just read on BBC News that the new version of ChatGPT can flirt. Who is that for? Who asked for that? Who's interested in being chatted up by an ephemeral cloud of stolen reddit posts? Told by a soulless megazord of pilfered landing pages that it wants to "smash your back doors in 🥵"?

And why is the BBC, of all institutions, letting me know this radically pathetic experience is becoming available?

What if we started a political party called "Woke". Liberals and conservatives alike would shit themselves inside out. And while it would get attention as a "joke", the party itself could use that supposed novelty platform to be earnestly pro-LGBT/anti genocide/apartheid/and anti-capitalist?

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

I have been told I'm not supposed to use the term "woke" because it's a form of cultural appropriation. That covers the liberals... Do I have any Conservative followers who want to weigh in?

(I acknowledge the origin of the term. I use it because it's an expedient way of both invoking what it ACTUALLY means and upsetting those willfully using it incorrectly, hence the toot)

Next time you see an image or read some text generated by AI, think about what that AI has seen. Because it is, more or less, everything on the web. And that includes a lot of things that shouldn't be there. Things we aren't supposed to be sharing or seeing and which most of us don't. The image you are looking at, or the text you are reading, is always, and inevitably, informed by illegal images of children. Somewhere, in those mutant pixels in front of your eyes, is child porn.

It doesn't matter what ARIA Authoring Practices says. If you implement patterns that suppress tab interaction in favour of binding arrow keys (for tabs, menus, etc) your users will be confused and blocked. They will also hate you. As I said in a recent talk:

There are two ways you can make websites less accessible with ARIA:

 1. Using ARIA incorrectly
 2. Using ARIA correctly

For the powerless, it means freedom from being subjected to power. For the powerful, it means the freedom to wield it.

Does anyone have any experience with SVG filters but applied to <canvas>? Before I go down that rabbit hole, does using them with <canvas> improve performance at all, or should I expect the same jankiness?

Most of the time, I get hired to fix things as a consultant developer that would not be broken if they had been designed more thoughtfully in the first place. Sound familiar? But here's the thing: I'm not a developer. I studied art and design at university, including how to design websites. But they didn't teach me how to code, even though that's most of the work. So, in early employment, I had to ""steal company time"" to learn how to do that and be better at my job, as a designer.

@jscholes Let's just talk about accessibility for simplicity: Someone says to me, "can you make this carousel accessible?" And the answer is usually no, not this one, it's fucked. It's extremely difficult or impossible to make good of the component. As a designer, I would have the authority to remove the carousel altogether and put a completely different pattern in place. Or, as a designer who can code, I could devise a carousel-like alternative that is, in fact, accessible BY DESIGN.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

Recently, I've taken on design work that lets me work in code. One involved the ""redesign"" of a website. Being in this position allows me to improve the performance and accessibility of a website to an extent that is completely out of reach of a developer, who inherits prior art. And this is despite the fact that performance and accessibility are seen as responsibilities of developers.
