Most of the time, I get hired to fix things as a consultant developer that would not be broken if they had been designed more thoughtfully in the first place. Sound familiar? But here's the thing: I'm not a developer. I studied art and design at university, including how to design websites. But they didn't teach me how to code, even though that's most of the work. So, in early employment, I had to ""steal company time"" to learn how to do that and be better at my job, as a designer.

What if we started a political party called "Woke". Liberals and conservatives alike would shit themselves inside out. And while it would get attention as a "joke", the party itself could use that supposed novelty platform to be earnestly pro-LGBT/anti genocide/apartheid/and anti-capitalist?

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

I have been told I'm not supposed to use the term "woke" because it's a form of cultural appropriation. That covers the liberals... Do I have any Conservative followers who want to weigh in?

(I acknowledge the origin of the term. I use it because it's an expedient way of both invoking what it ACTUALLY means and upsetting those willfully using it incorrectly, hence the toot)

Might start a political party in the UK whose stance is simply "genocide is bad, actually". Kind of a gap in the market there.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw I should have said "genocide and transphobia are both bad" ๐Ÿ˜…

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw I admit I'm not 100% caught up, but I've been made aware of multiple issues, brought up by trans folks (mostly over on Twitter when I was there)

What's a good/cheap host with easy/automatic https cert setup for static sites? Netlify but without the surprise charges?

heydon,

@sarajw Wait... can I use a custom domain?

@Tijn Ehhhh

it is simply time for the world to admit that capitalism is a failed experiment that results in massive systemic oppression and inequity and banish its practice.

heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@djsundog It does that on purpose so I'm not sure about "failed"...

If only there was an attribute that actually changed the writing direction which also sufficed as a styling hook.

The problem with AI generated information is it's frequently inaccurate.

Next time you see an image or read some text generated by AI, think about what that AI has seen. Because it is, more or less, everything on the web. And that includes a lot of things that shouldn't be there. Things we aren't supposed to be sharing or seeing and which most of us don't. The image you are looking at, or the text you are reading, is always, and inevitably, informed by illegal images of children. Somewhere, in those mutant pixels in front of your eyes, is child porn.

There is nothing quite like a @btconf event. It transcends web/tech/design conferences in the quality of content, production value, and community spirit. Each event leaves you inspired for months. If you haven't been, there's a few tickets left for this one. Do yourself a favor! https://mastodon.social/@btconf/112243307690262093

Top tip: you don't build a "dual power" alternative to centralised social media by making it part of your alternative.

๐Ÿ“ Testing HTML With Modern CSS https://heydonworks.com/article/testing-html-with-modern-css/

(The last time I addressed this topic was circa 2016. It's amazing what you can write selectors for these days. Plus we have custom properties!)

heydon, to random
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

CSS sense check: there's no way to style an element, directly, based on the presence or absence of a custom property is there? Things I've tried:

  1. Style queries (only work for the custom property on a container)
  2. @scope (can style the element itself with :scope BUT targets selectors, not styles)
heydon,
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

@mia Yes, that makes sense! Was wondering if there was some method outside of container queries, I guess.

First gig for which we were provided a green room. Which was just a flat two doors down from the venue with one green wall and some odd decor.

Grey carpet with one section covered in a weird fake moss/plant thing.
