So uh I accidentally unlocked Final Cut Pro on the iPad Pro (2018), so I took it for a spin. It all just worked, and was perfectly usable? Even the 4K export was fast.

Makes you wonder why officially it only lets you install on an iPad with an M-series chip…

✍️ Wishing for a better Apple Notes

With the upcoming event in June, everyone is wondering about Apple’s AI or the new MacBooks but here I am, hoping for Apple to give its note-taking app some love.

No matter how beautiful, intricate and optimised my note taking system is, there’s a 9 in 10 chance I’m just going to text myself

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan Yep. Removing friction is the golden rule of UX and it really changes how much you’re going to use a product or not. That’s why Inended up with Apple Notes for quick stuff and iA Writer for long form.

✍️Design is not my passion

Something it took me way too long to realise, even if deep down I always knew it.

Doesn't mean it's not what I want to do for a living, but it definitely isn't what I want to live for.

My longest article to date, for a reason.

@jake4480 Thanks Jake, that means a lot. Yes, I feel you. It's sometimes feels like we're pushed into other priorities because of the environment around us and it's not easy to find your own space.

If you need a clear idea of who I am at the core of my being, I am a person who relishes in the smug satisfaction of never having played 2048, because I only ever played Threes!

This is really not bad

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian yep, I’ve also tried it a bit and the thing that surprised me the most is how useful it actually is.

It’s not just-another-spin-on-an-ai-chatbot.

They thought about what users need and put care in designing an informative but well crafted UI around it.

It's the small details: one line of makes it much easier to focus when opening items in by removing space around the lightbox.

P.S. mymind.com is a gem and everyone should try it!

After: Reading an article on mymind.com, with just a small padding around the content, so you can focus better and use all the available space

iamfran, to random
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

No one talks about it because hey, it’s Apple, but the fact that on Apple TV+ you can’t distinguish between:

  • the content that’s included in the subscription
  • the one that’s available to you through other services
  • the one that’s part of another subscription
  • and the one you have to buy

is extremely frustrating

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg Oh yeah! I’ve no experience with Roku but with Apple TV it may be even worse since it pulls in content from other services as well (HBO, Disney+, etc.) with no way to distinguish between them until you click on them.

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg And I mean, I understand that they do that to not clutter the interface either repeated content (logos/availability) but there has to be a better way to do it. Maybe show them on hover?

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@nyquildotorg That would be best for the user but it goes against what Apple wants to achieve: one single place where you can find all the content available, in a smooth, cohesive experience. I think the best way to do it would be to add a small indicator (maybe on hover) to separate content visually but non hierarchically.

With the release of iOS 17.3, Stolen Device Protection is now generally available. This is one of my favorite new iOS features. You will want to turn on Stolen Device Protection as it provides a great additional security layer for everyone, but particularly for those of us who use iCloud Keychain.

Turn on Stolen Device Protection by opening Settings, selecting Face ID & Passcode, and then choosing Turn On Protection under Stolen Device Protection.

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs turned it on immediately but now I can’t add back my Exchange account. It says I first have to disable Stolen Device Protection, which will not happen.

⭐ Author Clock: A Novel Way To Tell Time https://www.authorclock.com/

"There are 1440 minutes of the day, and we have quotes for every single minute—no exceptions"

This is ridiculouosly cool and now all I can think about is getting my hands on that quote data.

Update: Literary Clock is a web version https://www.literaryclock.com

@robb I've been thinking about getting one since I first saw it but it's probably not going to happen.

BTW, there's also a guide to create your own with an old Kindle: https://www.instructables.com/Literary-Clock-Made-From-E-reader/

And that article also mentions a web version: https://literature-clock.jenevoldsen.com/

haven‘t seen it covered in my timeline much yet – is everybody aware that clear released its big 2.0 update yesterday?
it‘s that iconic to-do lists from early app store days. and it comes with a ton of features, themes, alt app icons and rewards.

clear won‘t replace things for me but i‘m really glad it‘s back!

iamfran,
@iamfran@mastodon.social avatar

@JeroenSchaper @gestalter Yeah, I think the rest of the world move forward and Clear remained behind.

The landscape of apps is completely different compared to when the first version came out.
