I would love hiking / walking shoes that don't get wet, don't get holes in, and last more than a year. I treat mine well, clean them, spray them with the special spray to keep them water tight, and yet..

Does anyone have good recommendations?

Made a script that connects automatically my computer to when joining a new, unknown network.

If you disconnect from the network, it disconnects from VPN, and if you connect to a know/trusted network, it will ignore it and won't use the VPN.

Very sad about the news of Akira Toriyama's passing. Dragon Ball made up a large portion of my youth.

The sheer amount of Google "stuff" that floats around is just baffling. Any tool you need, they've got it. Quite an outrageous strategy to just attempt to obliterate any competition.

The point at which family members are saying "that app you gave me didn't do what I wanted, so I swapped to Google's" goes to reiterate their tentacle grip, widespread coverage and that they're such a juggernaut.

Just an opinion here really, more I see of them the more I want to avoid them.

What's everyone's experiences with #degoogled phones? Does #microg get a lot of use as an stepping stone, or just ripping the plaster work out?

I'm completely Google services free, but sometimes there is the odd app that refuses to open.

Yeah but I can't run that on my OnePlus 7t Pro. Probably would else.

I had 30+ app store updates pending. A whopping 2 of them had release notes that weren't some form of “bug fixes and performance improvements”.

I spent a fair while trying to find an app that would show me basketball scores and results. Figures on a page. One app made me scroll into literal oblivion to reject trackers and "we value your privacy" mumbo jumbo. Why? Why must we be made to suffer?

Why are there no mass market alternatives for overtaking Chromebooks in the education space?

If there's one thing missed in the data collection and privacy space, surely it is the potential to avoid handing out such devices to school students?

I tried out Debian 12 on my secondary development laptop recently. Pleasantly surprised I have to admit. I've had this long running joke that Debian is stuck on kernel 2.4 since time began, but I actually got newer software than expected!

Honestly though, these days I don't care too much for fancy distributions. Give me Gnome 40 something, Flatpak and LTS. Then I'm a happy chappy.

I reinstalled my development laptop (Thinkpad t490) to run OpenBSD yesterday.

I've never used OpenBSD for any length of time, my impression thus far is pure amazement that I've never used it for any length of time.

Getting it all set up reminds me of why I started loving to tinker with Linux and different operating systems in general. If all the things I want to run (incl. working mic for meetings) work out, then I am certain I might stick around for a while.

Usually when applying for jobs I'd argue that not all requirements need to be completely satisfied. Take a punt at it! Except when a requirement is citizenship and residency in a location, applying when you obviously don't have it is just a waste of time for both sides. Reading job specifications are important.

Yes, I intentionally signed into my 2FA Yubikey, random-password-manager-generated protected email account, you don't need to alert me that I've done so via every medium.
