@ai6yr They don't have a whole lot of spares for those huge towers. The electricity may be out for quite a while.

@ai6yr There is a rather nice website at vafri.is/quake/ that shows all earthquakes in Iceland from magnitude 0. on up, with options to choose depth, magnitude and number of hours.

@BlackAzizAnansi I'm here! Oh, well, I guess I'm a weird nerd. But I'm an Elderly weird nerd. Does that help?

In “Petro-masculinity: Fossil Fuels and Authoritarian Desire” (2018), Cara Daggett explains why, with white men, denial and so often go together.

She makes a powerful argument that the patriarchal power structures in our society are deeply entwined with our fossil-fuel based economy.

@gorfram @acdha @rsynnott @LauraLangdon @mekkaokereke @bluejekyll I realized that the Founders meant all straight white Protestant Men were created equal, and that everybody else was both "other" and "lesser" and in the case of women and non-white men, "not fully competent to care for themselves." American egalitarianism has always been a scam.

LOL using AI to convert an ancient language into a questionable one (having been a professional Java programmer in my lifetime... not my favorite language. Unless you like to chase infinite memory leaks and apps which keep on getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and bigger until they use all the memory available on your system.) https://techcrunch.com/2023/08/22/ibm-taps-ai-to-translate-cobol-code-to-java/

lesson learned yesterday: next time the phone blares out a M6.0 earthquake warning, grab the climbing helmet hanging on the wall next to the desk and PUT IT ON. (no damage here, but puzzling over where to "duck and cover" while waiting for the earthquake was ineffective.)

@ai6yr Good point. I have a construction helmet back from my work days & I am going to go stick it in the room that has the most problematic duck & cover opportunities.

Getting an earthquake during a hurricane is the sort of story you get when your writers are all on strike.

@mcnees And now there is a tornado warning.

Interesting to me to see how some folks on the Birdsite who were unwilling to try out Mastodon are eagerly jumping on Threads, because (not in spite of) it being part of Facebook and being corporate owned. I guess a lot of people make their decisions based on "brands" and being part of the crowd--even if that brand is known for vacuuming up and selling your personal information. 🤔

@ai6yr Yes, I am pretty happy with Mastodon.

@danarel Try to have more than one person to be your anchor. When a person with a mood disorder needs some privacy and escape it is not a rejection. Just respect it. 12-step programs like co-dependents anonymous are great places to listen and learn skills for dealing with tricky times with other people. Anxiety Twitter used to be great too, alas.
