Ticketmaster is frequently blamed for high concert prices and let's be clear, it's awful. But Vox's Whizy Kim says it's not the only culprit. She looks at the other reasons going to gigs got so pricey, and one surprising way things could be improved.

@CultureDesk One big problem vis a vis ticket prices is that income from recordings has all but dried up, thanks to Spotify royalty rates that are vanishingly small - especially for artists with small/moderate audiences. They only way recording artists can really make money is by touring. Just look at Taylor Swift - she made a butt-load of money over the last year and a half, but it wasn't from selling records, or from streaming revenue - it was from Eras tour ticket and merch sales.

Assuming the public votes won’t be voting for Israel as much as the judges vote has.

Genuinely disgusted Israel weren’t banned like Russia were.

jeffmarkel,
@jeffmarkel@mastochist.social avatar

@hobbitswife so, when one government - Hamas has governed Gaza for many years - makes war on another - Israel - the attacked country isn’t allowed to engage with its attacker? An attacker whose declared purpose is to wipe out Israel and commit genocide against Jews worldwide?

Trump is making a legal claim, appealing to the Supreme Court, that no acts committed while in office as President may be prosecuted.

I don’t think he’s thought this through. If he’s correct, and SCOTUS rules in his favor, there is absolutely nothing to stop the sitting President, I.e. Joe Biden, from revoking Trump’s US citizenship, or locking him up in a black site somewhere, or taking even more extreme measures.

Just sayin’ : for Drupal version upgrades that have been billed (for the most part) as no-brainers, recent upgrades from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9, and from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10, have taken hundreds of hours.At $100+/hour that''s a significant investment for, essentially, no perceived value. The time and expense involved have helped push management away from Drupal as the preferred content management platform.

Writers comparing the degraded versions of their work to the way “coders” work is a really instructive tell: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/20/business/economy/writers-strike-hollywood-gig-work.html

@pluralistic this seems like yet another example, in yet another industry, of “enshittification”

“…Industry analysts point out that studios have felt a growing need to rein in spending amid the decline of traditional television and pressure from investors to focus on profitability over subscriber growth.”

@TheCoolest @SrRochardBunson you'd also want to use only a limited amount of the space available - i.e. 40-50% tops (ideally even less), because that would limit the distance the heads had to move when seeking data on the drive
