@Sal Thank you! Indeed, the opsin is not the sensor, but we can use a mutation in the opsin gene to disrupt the ciliary superstructure and then we see a phenotype in pressure sensing, and also in UV light sensing, as we previously described: https://elifesciences.org/articles/36440

We have now published a new and massively extended/reworked preprint of the whole-body larval with over 50 figures

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.03.17.585258v1

All the analyses, plots and figures should be reproducible in with the code provided:

@dpunked Thank you! A bryozoan larva would be nice! Maybe one day we will get there...

Here's a little cheat sheet, by Marcus and me, vs. .

What would you add?

@yoginho Life shows nanoscale motions that can be detected by atomic force microscope

People who write : do you write about

  1. projects that you’ve already almost completed (hiding the fact that they’re almost completed, so that you can use the funding for completely new projects), or
  2. new projects that you haven’t really started yet (for which you might just have some preliminary data)?

Do you think 1) is unethical? Do you think 1) is necessary? Do you think 1) has the highest chances of funding? Please comment :)

@cowboycatranch @albertcardona @elduvelle @janbogar @RichardShaw @maartjeoostdijk We also published the lab's publishing policy and new lab members have to agree. We have been publishing in non-corporate venues for many years now and I don't think that the career of people in the lab or my career suffered from this. Integrity, openness and the quality of our science is all that matter to us, not titles or magic tokens https://www.cos.uni-heidelberg.de/en/research-groups/gaspar-jekely/our-approach-to-publication

But, please, please stop spreading this urban legend that adult sea squirts do not have behaviour and a nervous system. They do, furthermore: "most parts of the ascidian larval CNS, except for the tail nerve cord, are maintained during metamorphosis and recruited to form the adult CNS"

Anyone knows of a app that allows you to do drafts one or more ? (Not facebook - actual threads)
@feditips ? 🙏

Edit: to be more specific: I’d like to be able to create a thread in the app, so a sequence of posts (not just 1 post) that can each have text, images etc. and are in a specific order, and if need be save it and come back to update it later, and eventually post it.
Also, I am using iOS and desktop (Windows). If you check the comments you’ll see that Fedilab seems to allow this but for Android.

Thanks for all the input so far!

@elduvelle @feditips

You can do this with the toot tool:
https://toot.bezdomni.net/introduction.html

Author your complete thread in one .sh file and post it with all media etc. You can reply as many times as you want.

#!/bin/bash

toot post "toot 1" > toot_id.txt -m path/to/image.png -d "My image"

id=$(grep -oE '[0-9]+$' toot_id.txt) && echo $id

toot post --reply-to $id "reply to toot 1" -v 'unlisted' -m path/to/image2.png -d "My 2nd image"

toot post --reply-to $id "second reply to toot 1" -v 'unlisted'

And if you get an ERC starter you will have to pay your entire salary from it, and you won't have money left to set up a decent team, defying the purpose of the grant. The ERC starting grant is considered a fellowship in the UK. #uk #academia

people! How do you decide which journals to submit to? What factors to you consider? Excluding glam mags like Nature, Science, etc. What is your favourite journal? I always found J Neurosci reviews a bit savage so reluctant to go there. Other options?

Recommended by a great scientist and great person, @jekely, I'm giving this platform a try.

Please follow or connect or whatever we do here :) Say hi!

@DacksLabECB Thanks for joining, it is great to see you here! You could start by posting one (or more) introductions (with hashtag), which many people follow and can then easily see you and what you do/who you are. I also suggest to check out @feditips to learn about how the Fediverse works,
