Is the Fediverse for everyone?

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@reiver If “fediverse” is a value-neutral concept as “email”, “web”, and “internet” then yes. It's, for better or worse, for everyone.

Hey folks! I'm looking for examples of elected officials and people running for office who have accounts on the fediverse.

Know of one? Please let me know! Boosts appreciated :boost_requested:

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@josh I follow @marcel_kolaja, current member of the EU Parliament running for reelection for the Czech Pirate Party. (I guess you'll find many more officials on the fediverse for Pirate Parties across the Europe.)

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@bnut @josh After wrapping up the pilot, the new instance is now officially under EU Commision's management: https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@EUCommission/112455456338250699
(Wouldn't hurt to link there from that announcement though.)

@ernie Oh. I guess I can forget my ICQ number now.

Those of you who use - should I be using the Android app Element, or Element X?

I just want text based comms in the channel. I'm not fussed about anything else.

The Element website recommends Element. But their GitHub seems to recommend Element X. And, frankly, I don't understand why I'd want one over the other.

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I've started using Element X recently. The UI feels much smoother and more “native”. What's missing for me so far is threads support (it displays threaded conversations as replies so it's quite messy; it can reply to a thread, but can't start a new thread).

This is what Twitter / X does when I try to access it on my mobile browser. It just forever redirects between two URLs.

I know I could probably fix this by deleting my cookies but, honestly, I sort of like Twitter this way? The page started doing the infinite loop a few days ago, and it's still doing it now (I just checked).

Twitter mobile forever redirecting and loading.

@filiph this is the best way to experience Xitter, tbh

‘Tis but a Scratch: Does TypeSpec Reignite the Specification Wars?

https://nordicapis.com/tis-but-a-scratch-does-typespec-reignite-the-specification-wars/

"TypeSpec is an attempt to combine the design-first and code-first worlds into something that works across both methodologies and reduces cognitive load for designers. ... The TypeSpec approach also means a general decrease in complexity, which, for Microsoft, eases its use across the organization." -- #ChrisWood

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@mamund Nah, to me TypeSpec confirms that ALPS was the right aim from the start. 😉

Personally I like this interest in higher-level API design and I hope that we'll shift towards, as @smizell calls it, the language-oriented approach.

ChatGPT 3.5 vs. ChatGPT4.

Question: Is there something radically improved in the ChatGPT4 LLM such that it gets this right "organically?"

Or—pardon my cynicism—is there some exception code slapped into the system in response to a bug being filed, and this isn't actually "improved" so much as "faked to avoid embarrassment?"

ChatGPT 4 transcript: Which is heavier 2kg of feathers or 1kg of lead? 2 kg of feathers is heavier than 1 kg of lead. The material doesn't change the fact that 2 kg is always heavier than 1 kg.

I'm on here looking for text indexers and everything is 'lightning fast exoscale terafloops that scales to enterprise quantawarbles with polytopplic performanations' and it would be great if this industry could breathe into a bag until it remembers that one person with one computer is a constituency that matters.

@mhoye I'm all in on “lightweight alternatives to Elasticsearch / Solr”. Let's see if I starred something useful…

While researching the history, I stumbled upon the federated SNS timeline: https://im.youronly.one/techmagus/kb/ddfon/federated-social-network-timeline-2022346/ by @youronlyone

Quite comprehensive resource! I will look into adding The Appleseed Project, One Social Web, and Tent.

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@youronlyone I think The Appleseed Project is the oldest one, going back to 2004 (though the oldest archived sites I found so far are from 2005). I only learned about OSW from this article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10128476 – I think they were building on top of XMPP like Buddycloud, but I need to look further into it.

Yeah, I agree ATproto should be included.

I'll do some more digging next week and open an issue or a PR in your repository, thanks!

What the actual fuck, Mastodon.social?
They now interstitial wall links out like other social networks they bitch about? Really cool leading by example, not. Link is to be clicked without your backward warnings.

Look at it, I still have a t-shirt from @webexpo 2013. It's kinda worn, but it lasted much longer than other conference merch (same can be said about those events). Little did I know I'd speak there 11 years later.

And in case you still don't have a ticket, you can use promo code “JANV24” for 15% off on http://webexpo.net/ (I don't get any referral bonus or anything, just good karma)
