Apparently in the question of “am I having my period today” does not have a deterministic answer. Sweet. 🙄

So I’m 100% with @mekkaokereke
that people getting conservative as they age is a lie. (My 86 year old dad has gotten more liberal and militant with age. Same for my mom before she passed.)

But … I’m finding that I’m preferring old & things the older I get. (I literally just bought a leather costrel on Etsy.) They’re simpler, more environmentally friendly and durable things and suddenly I’m like … oh god, am I turning “conservative”?! Like literally, that’s conserving old stuff …

Wowza. Booking a Lyft right now to downtown shows $75. Yellow Cab App shows $30-40. Am gonna give the new app a whirl and cross my fingers that the fare isn't ridiculous with a meter. (One thing I don't love about cabs.)

Last time I took a cab from the airport, it was fully $20 less than the same trip had been a week earlier with Lyft. The rideshare apps are seeming like no longer such a good deal...

Popovers: A long and rambly story. (1/n)

Growing up, my mom made one of two breakfasts on weekends - rolls out of a can or popovers. Popovers were originally made from a box mix that she said my grandfather used and swore by. When it went out of business, my mom was shocked to discover how simple the basic recipe was - her father had always said they were incredibly difficult.

As a reminder, no corporate algorithm here means you don’t need to disguise your words.

Twitter can be Twitter, Trump can be Trump, Musk can be Musk, etc. Using plain language is both clearer for readers than code words AND means people can set up more useable filters to control their own experience.

I used to be thrilled every time launched and was like "Do you want to install the update"? Yes! Free! Awesome! Works better!

...Now that they're owned by Canva, I have this fear that every update might be The One that starts the enshittification.

When you give someone advice, I encourage you to take a moment first and consider whether you’re actually speaking to yourself. So many people I know who tell others “slow down” are themselves stressed. Those who tell others “speak up” are often anxious. I’ve found more often than I’d expect, advice I’m saying aloud to others is better first given to myself.

This advice itself gets very circular and meta when applied to this toot.

The is fascinating how many things are for the “female gaze”. The dancers are fully clothed. The halftime show is a BUFF male gymnast with a PUPPY as part of his act. Lol.

Ending counseling school, prepping for leading Rangers at the local burn, and dealing with my aging hoarder father apparently breeds nightmares? Last night I was working with my cohort to protect ourselves from killer drones while in an architecture of rambly rooms filled to the brim with oddball things and books, and calling an ICS incident as filthy water poured out of a room-sized washing machine into one of those rooms.

Thanks brain - what exactly are you trying to tell me?

I’m a bit stressed putting together my new Kromanski; it has text about voided warranty if the front and back are flipped. It doesn’t have nearly as clear instructions as the SampleIt did. Also, my right side heddle blocks’ little wooden nubs is not really going in. :-(

Can anyone tell if there’s anything obviously wrong so far? Also, on the Kromskis, is the logo generally on the front side or the back side? That might help me orient a bit.

On May 10, 1994, I took a break from AP testing to watch the solar eclipse in Ohio. They deemed it important enough that we were allowed to leave the test, one at a time, with eclipse glasses. I dimly remember learning the next “major” event in the area would be in 2024. I tallied my age and realized I’d be ancient then. I remember thinking - I might even be DEAD! That’s so old.

I’m thrilled to report that I am NOT DEAD yet. Although I’m no longer in Ohio so won’t see the eclipse.

Cool, after the “dirty hands” song of the morning, a dish broke, and I’ve now got an impressive Frankenstein’s monster looking knuckle on my left hand with five stitches. And a wicked splint. Dirty hands indeed!

With transphobes destroying Budweiser and Belgium regulators destroying Miller, will we finally rid the world of shitty beer? One can only hope for that as a silver lining.

Hey Mastodon, does anyone know of and love a general purpose, actually printed craft magazine? I’d love for it to have a variety of from to to whatever else, be for adults, not more ads than content, and magically appear at my house regularly. I get Taproot which is close but is domestic crafts rather than a broader range. It seems like so many are focused on a niche, like . Maybe I’m the only person who wants this? Boosts appreciated. ❤️

I've had very few teachers in my life that I felt moved to write thank you notes to.

... I'm currently writing basically everyone in the Saybrook counseling department and a fair number of the adjuncts too.

Just to say, yanno, thanks for the minor act of helping me change my life.

As my mouth is absolutely on fire and delighted from my latest takeout from the local restaurant, I find myself wanting to learn in this style.

Anyone have English language YouTube channels or recipe books to recommend? They should assume I have access to Asian groceries, rather than trying to sub ingredients. I know of Souped Up, who seems to do a variety of styles. But no one else.

Would love suggestions or boosts!

Being sick has meant a lot of reading. Just finished “Everyone in my family has killed someone,” by Benjamin Stevenson. I’m not a huge reader of murder mysteries, but this was a delight. The conceit is that an author who writes about the golden rules for murder mysteries finds himself … in a murder mystery. So he follows his own rules in telling it. The voice is hilarious and the mystery complex enough to be interesting but not ridiculously convoluted.

My insurance company (Kaiser) says that from Jan 1-Feb 2 of this year, I'm showing as having a secondary insurance of "WorkersCompensation". I have no idea what this is or why it would be there; I'm a self-employed student and have been for the past 3 years. They can't tell me anything else about it because it seems like it's not through them

....Is this some scam or something? 🤔

Looking at my stats in TickTick is interesting. I'm consistent in finishing between 4-6 items per work day. This explains why at a large corporation, I internalized "I can get 3 things done from my list per day". The other 1-2 items were usually taken up by meetings or sudden new priorities.

I'm sure that number is highly personal and depends a lot on how one tends to chunk their to do items. For example: Is "Write spec" one item, or 3 ("Research", "Draft", and "Revise")?

I feel like I’m always finding and seeing threads in reverse order here, which is annoying. I know it’s not popular here (and with some good reasons), but man I miss the threadunroller. Going to read stuff in order, with a wider page width, and not artificially chopped up, was nice.
