I'd like to remind all Mastodon users that you can add a language filter to any follow relationship on Mastodon.

If you follow me and you don't speak German, you can easily remove my German posts from your timeline by adjusting the language settings.

Go to my profile page, select the dot menu and click "Change subscribed languages". Then select the languages that you speak.

This really is a hidden gem 💎 on Mastodon and not many people seem to know this feature :awesome:

@thomas Oh wow, TIL! Thanks for sharing this. Also minor note, but it appears to only show that menu option if you're already following someone. (Not surprising, I just literally tried it first on you and was confused for a moment.)

As a reminder, no corporate algorithm here means you don’t need to disguise your words.

Twitter can be Twitter, Trump can be Trump, Musk can be Musk, etc. Using plain language is both clearer for readers than code words AND means people can set up more useable filters to control their own experience.

@sarahtaber I’ve heard that sailors nicknames kinda derived from this - “limeys” for some that used citrus and “krauts” for those who figured out sauerkraut. Any truth to that?

@sarahtaber Oh, wow. That's so fascinating - thank you for sharing all this!

Want to find certain communities, people, or topics here? Guess at and search hashtags. The website autocompletes to help. Follow anyone that’s close to what you want. Watch who they boost, follow them, and follow hashtags they use. If you see a topical server, check out the local feed to follow people. If it’s not a community you’re part of generally, initially listen more than engaging. Rinse, wash, repeat. In <checks date> about four months you’ll have a pretty rich feed.

    jonobie, to random
    @jonobie@social.coop avatar

How to tune your Home feed:

    Too few posts?
Follow hashtags, watch your local or federated feed and follow folks there, follow groups from a.gup.pe (basically auto-repeaters), and follow people who boost a lot. Soon you will have a rich firehose of a feed.

    Too many posts?
Turn off boosting for some people you follow, use filters, unfollow liberally, use lists instead of Home, and time-mute people you want a break from.

Good luck. There's so much good content out here!

I'm running a few more sessions of my Conquering class! Next time: March 6th @ 10am-12pm PT.

This is an action-oriented class, where you learn and try tools in class and then leave with the ones that worked for you. If you are at a tech company, you may get O'Reilly for free already; if not, check your public library (Seattle has a subscription) or sign up for a free 2-week trial and get the class that way.

When you give someone advice, I encourage you to take a moment first and consider whether you’re actually speaking to yourself. So many people I know who tell others “slow down” are themselves stressed. Those who tell others “speak up” are often anxious. I’ve found more often than I’d expect, advice I’m saying aloud to others is better first given to myself.

This advice itself gets very circular and meta when applied to this toot.

Hey Mastodon, does anyone know of and love a general purpose, actually printed craft magazine? I’d love for it to have a variety of from to to whatever else, be for adults, not more ads than content, and magically appear at my house regularly. I get Taproot which is close but is domestic crafts rather than a broader range. It seems like so many are focused on a niche, like . Maybe I’m the only person who wants this? Boosts appreciated. ❤️

For the second time, the / frame has broken. This version is less than 2 years old.

So I need a new treadmill. It needs a long ramp (husband is 6'5"), to be super sturdy, and ideally has a variety of interesting programs. Any recommendations?

(Have I mentioned to never, ever, ever, ever, ever buy a treadmill from iFit/NordicTrack? Because you should never ever ever pay this much for this crappy a tool.)

    So I’m 100% with @mekkaokereke
that people getting conservative as they age is a lie. (My 86 year old dad has gotten more liberal and militant with age. Same for my mom before she passed.)

But … I’m finding that I’m preferring old & things the older I get. (I literally just bought a leather costrel on Etsy.) They’re simpler, more environmentally friendly and durable things and suddenly I’m like … oh god, am I turning “conservative”?! Like literally, that’s conserving old stuff …

Did you know that with Toot! app (@tootapp), you can follow the local feeds of servers you’re not on? It’s a fantastic way to broaden your view of the . (Tip 1 is to follow hashtags, but most of us hear that quickly.) I follow 12 different servers, from local servers, an Econ server, various social sciences servers, and the infosec server. And there’s an easy long-click way to favorite, boost, or follow from your primary account. Highly recommend.

Did you know, you can set your account to auto delete old posts? I found it super freeing to set it for 2 months - long enough for anyone who wants see what following me is like, but short enough that I don’t feel like I need to polish the next Great American Toot. You can also set it to keep toots favorited or boosted a lot, so if you accidentally do write the Great Toot of 2023, it sticks around for posterity.

Installed Linux Mint on a Virtual Box to start playing with it as a possible home OS in the future. So far, so good, although I haven't done much beyond adding some basic stuff. The fonts and graphics look a wee bit fuzzy, which I'm suspecting is the fault of Virtual Box (or the interaction) instead of Cinnamon, but we'll see how that wears over time.

Pondering whether I want to do the GNOME integration with Google or if that just means I'm going backwards on my de-Googling progress. Hm.

I’m a bit stressed putting together my new Kromanski; it has text about voided warranty if the front and back are flipped. It doesn’t have nearly as clear instructions as the SampleIt did. Also, my right side heddle blocks’ little wooden nubs is not really going in. :-(

Can anyone tell if there’s anything obviously wrong so far? Also, on the Kromskis, is the logo generally on the front side or the back side? That might help me orient a bit.

Wowza. Booking a Lyft right now to downtown shows $75. Yellow Cab App shows $30-40. Am gonna give the new app a whirl and cross my fingers that the fare isn't ridiculous with a meter. (One thing I don't love about cabs.)

Last time I took a cab from the airport, it was fully $20 less than the same trip had been a week earlier with Lyft. The rideshare apps are seeming like no longer such a good deal...

So Yellow Cab App for was around $50 to Lyft’s $75.

👎🏻No way to rate driver or give feedback other than calling an actual phone number.

👎🏻No exact quote, so you’re on a meter.

👍🏻Fleet is not Teslas with doors that won’t open if there’s a crash.

👍🏻Clean car, fine driver, if sliiightly chattier than I wanted.

👍🏻Prebook time had them showing up on the dot. Didn’t try an instant hail.

    👍🏻Much cheaper!

    I’d try them again.
