Voters don't seem particularly concerned when huge damages are paid from their taxes.

With normal jobs, you get kicked the fuck out if you drop a few million off the profit by being stupid.

It's like people don't get that those violent assholes are their employees, not their lords.

Character idea: A scholar who is a book louse larvae— he is deeply torn between completing his research by reading the books and eating them so that he can pupate (and maybe then, at last have the nerve to ask out the moth on whom he has a terrible unrequited, totally secret crush)

Sometimes he eats books he finds poorly written out of spite.

How does this child never ever have a working pencil? It’s uncanny. Before you ask I have given her pencils so have others. There are pencils in locations all over for the taking— somehow this one is always struggling with something held together with tape— or in one case writing with just a little nub of lead salvaged from a compass. (why)

She’s embarrassed to ask for pencils since I think others gave hounded her over being prepared— but the problems persist—

@dgar There were definitely people who thought the ozone stuff was bullshit, but we had a drop-in replacement which allowed us to do what we were doing already, and by now, going back to CFCs would actually cost more than the stuff we use now.

That's why business agreed to steamroll over any objections.

The changes needed to drop coal will cause some rich people to lose out, so instead of moving to a better line of business, they're fighting the change.

Is it just me who finds it kind of pretentious when people start calling different coding techniques “pythonic”? like ? IDK most things that are “pythonic” seem to be info dense, very confusing, sometimes useful, but equally possibly obscure if you aren’t in the loop, cheeky— show-off-y and just a little annoying.

@augieray The damage is pretty much done.

The mainstream media selectively quoted the Ghebreyesus speech to make it what they wanted it to be, and everyone who read their coverage came away with "WHO declares covid is over" and stopped paying attention.

I know the speech was long, but a more accurate summary would be "covid declared endemic worldwide" and wasn't that hard to write.

The emotional need for it to be over won out over the truth that it is not.

Fellow antkeepers, how do you manage your home wifi? How do you deal with the sheer volume of connections. My router only allows up to 24 connections at a time, and most of my colonies seem to have their own routers set up-- but the cone ants can't be bothered and I keep getting bumped off the internet.

@futurebird My advice is to put the wifi router behind a wired one, which connects to the internet.

You simply can't do much else when there's so many radio signals.

You really want the ants on a physically separate device, since they'll constantly cause it to reboot with their absurd number of connections.

The rules of English state that once you stick a couple words together with a hyphen for a long enough time, those hyphenated words later become a compound word without a hyphen, and thus "correct English"; and the amount of time before you're allowed to remove the hyphen is completely arbitrary, but until it becomes official, everyone will tell you you're doing it wrong.

Then you'll show them that it made it to the dictionary, and they'll get mad about it not being "proper English."

Ha! Like that's a thing.

Almost the only people on this website who act insane to me (constantly “correct” me with wrong facts, explain things I already know, misinterpret what I say/give it the worst faith read, give me condescending unsolicited advice, or extrapolate what I said into something I didn’t say) are cis white men over 50. There have been 3 cis white women over 50 who have.

Before you jump in to talk over me again, boys, you’re not all like this! But the people doing this to me are almost all like you lol

@mttaggart @Npars01 Washing things well enough for medical use is a fair bit more intense than normal, which is why all the single-use stuff came in to begin with.

I don't know if a sudden surge of medical hygiene workers is realistic.
