Why is Instagram auto-applying filters when I upload photos? See attached with Instagram upload on left (no filter applied by the user, just some crappy insta-auto-applied filter) and same photo in photos.app on the right.

I figured out how to get to the photo that’s displayed in “Standby mode” in iOS. If you tape on the time, it displays when/where the photo was taken and a link to “open in Photos.” I don’t know when they added this, but now they just to need to do the same/similar for the Lock Screen. @waynedixon

I'm one of those people who watches things with the subtitles on, not because I need them but because sometimes the volume changes too much and the speech is too low.

It is mind blowing just how bad some of the closed captioning is on a lot of media... I mean, like horrendous. Incomplete sentences and misspellings, all that make it impossible to actually watch something if you need closed captioning.

I don't mean an occasional misspelling either, it's constant.

@waynedixon Movies/shows or live tv/sports? I turn them off during sports because I mostly don’t care what the commentators are saying.

Okay, Jukebox Friday Night's theme is "Up In the Sky."

All I can think of is Superman, which is nonsense, but that's how my brain works. "Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's..."

...Superman by Goldfinger https://songwhip.com/goldfinger/superman

What?

Restaurant idea: Rube Goldburger’s. When you order your burger, it is automatically prepared by an elaborate, overwrought, mechanical contraption.

Used Spotify for the first time since since March (been using Apple Music).

As much as I hate Spotify's attitude to paying artists, promoting Joe Rogan, bizarre UI changes etc etc - it is so much quicker and easier to 'get around' than Apple Music. Search works better, Album/Artist names are links. Same goes for Plex. Apple Music feels slow and fiddly, and the ‘Apple Music/Your Library' switch doesn’t help.

Which makes me wonder about trying out Tidal in Plex - anyone do this?

karschsp,
@karschsp@jawns.club avatar

@Solomon @jonhicks Interesting. I’ve found Apple Music’s recs to be pretty good. I pretty regularly find new or new-to-me artist by listening to “my” station. I feel it does a pretty decent job of mixing my regular rotation music with stuff it thinks I would like.

It’s been 30 years since I typed my first HTML tags. Sometimes I wonder how many more years of that I have before me, but I do kind of hope I at least make it another 20. Anyway, here’s a two-minute read about that night and what, exactly, I was marking up — including a link to a copy of that very first page.

@Meyerweb “... which was the style at the time” Did you also tie an onion to your belt? :D
1993 was the start for me, as well. I sometimes wish I had archived copies of the mess I made back then.
Anyway, thank you for three decades of pushing the web forward. 🙏

Last night I watched a video logged out of YouTube (on the TV app) and the frequency of ads was horrifying.

karschsp,
@karschsp@jawns.club avatar

@killyourfm I've basically stopped using YouTube since they started cracking down on ad blockers. I use FreeTube instead or yt-dlp if I really need to see the video.

Major labels get more profit, smaller indie labels and unsigned artists get less.

"A new threshold of minimum annual streams that a track must meet before it starts to generate royalties. The threshold, according to MBW, will de-monetize tracks that had previously received 0.5% of Spotify’s royalty pool."

@killyourfm to paraphrase Spinal Tap: “How much more 'less' can we pay them? The answer is none. None more ‘less’”

Apple Quietly Increases Prices for Some of its Services

@waynedixon Yeah, we’re an Apple Music fam now (it took a lot of convincing) and I enjoy some shows on Apple TV+, iCloud and Apple Arcade has some nice stuff as well! Don’t tell Apple but I’d probably pay up to $50 for all that. ;)

Watching this play out again and again. Caveat emptor if you ignore HOW something is funded. Relying on—let alone building a business on top of—VC-funded hypergrowth-or-bust dependencies is decidedly risky!

I don’t know how to feel about the situation. It certainly doesn’t decrease my disdain for Epic Games, and I’m disgusted by Songtradr’s stance of “supporting the band camp community is our top priority but let’s fire half the staff.”

But what’s the alternative? Isn’t it the only well-known music platform that doesn’t screw over musicians? Are there other places where I can launch a vinyl release for no upfront cost? Control my pricing?

Musicians need to take back this industry. how?

Has there ever been another arcade video game (not pinball) solely devoted to a band?

This is such sad news. Bandcamp is a haven for both artists and fans alike, but being resold after only a year and then losing 50% of the workforce doesn't give me hope for it's future.

@jonhicks It sucks. This leaves a huge void in the "how do I make literally anything off of my music without being part of the soul-crushing streaming machine..." market.

Not that I have/will/or care about making money off my music but still...

Also, it was a great place for fans to show support for artists that they truly care about. Now instead of spending $5 on an EP, a fan will have to stream said EP a billion times (thereby also making $ for the soul-crushers). :|
