I spent 20+ years on the hedonic treadmill, only to realize it doesn't lead anywhere. Now I'm a metamodern hippe living in the far north with my husband https://unstraight.club/@Nightwolf and our two dogs. My passion project right now is a contemporary urban space opera called "The Psychonaut Chronicles". See pinned threads for more about me and where I live. I alt-text images and expect the same from you.

I know it's hard to believe but I mostly keep this account to try to get people to watch my ant videos. (why I want people to watch ant videos is a question I can't really fathom...) I made a really good new video today with a time lapse that shows how heat sensitive Camponotus discolor are. They move their pupae constantly to maintain ideal development conditions.

You know the people that think ‘cis’ is a slur? I wonder how they would react when they find out that the term ‘heterosexual’ originally referred to a perversion …

wildarchaic,

@kazarnowicz
New terms are created all the time to replace words that have become offensive. (Sometimes offensive words are reclaimed by a group, as I'm sure you know. And language is a moving target. As soon as you find a new term for something, it can be deemed offensive, too.) It looks like "cisgender" was coined in 1994 and really has only recently come to prominence. Maybe when people become more familiar with it, there won't be so much confusion or people won't feel it's being used negatively towards them. Or maybe there could be another agreed-upon term that hasn't accrued so much baggage.

If any word is being used in a way intended to cause harm, it becomes pejorative. (I see "cis" and "neurotypical," for example, being used in quite dismissive or combative ways online, even if "cis" and "neurotypical" people aren't, at least for those particular reasons, part of oppressed groups.)

2/

wildarchaic,

@kazarnowicz I understand what you're saying and I agree someone being fake-offended by something isn't reason for everyone to stop using a term.

However, the history of language shows that a term that is "descriptive" and not "pejorative" can easily be taken out of context and used in a sarcastic, demeaning, or negative way. "Idiot" and "moron" were once psychiatric/medical terms for certain IQ ranges, for example. (Maybe not many people would be offended to be called a "genius." Though if the straight-A student gets taunted by being called "Hey genius!" in the school hallway by people who don't like them, it can still be hurtful.) —I acknowledge that it's most often terms for groups or traits that are generally seen as negative that become pejorative—and (the million-dollar question) how do you convince society to stop viewing something as negative?

1/

wildarchaic,

@kazarnowicz I don't mean to suggest people should waste energy catering to people who are themselves trying to be disrespectful or trying to take away others' rights (in particular, in this discussion, conservative cisgender Americans who are trampling on trans rights).

My point (maybe not worth arguing—it was more a question of respect across the board) is, if someone genuinely doesn't want to be called something, whether it's "homosexual" or "woman" or "cisgender" or whatever the case may be, why not take that into account?

I fully acknowledge that worrying about preferred terms for (non-oppressed) groups is of less importance than finding some way to stop the systemic anti-trans movement in the US.

Oh nice. Seattle Public Library has created a membership type for "13 to 26 year olds anywhere in the US" to be able to sign out e and audiobooks as a response to those locales banning books...

    Bit of a long shot, but could my good mastodon follower folk give me some boosts?

    I'm starting work on a documentary podcast series about the future of space; renewable/sustainable technologies, commercialism in the sector and the public's perception of it all.

    I'm hoping to connect with people who know space to complement my client's contacts, so any signal boosting would be appreciated!

    Does an employer who has a presence in Illinois need to restrict touchID/FaceID to be in compliance with the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act?

    I know this is a little more GRC than my normal infosec queries, but I would love to hear what others think.

    (It goes without saying that I personally believe that we should disable biometric logins, but I need a good reason to disable it other than "Security Says So")

    . Day 24. Any tropes you purposely chose to include or avoid?

    Yeah. I think a lot about how stories are generally told and what would happen if we twisted THIS? Or subverted THAT?

    I started out thinking I was going to “tell this story straight,” but… quickly ended up trying to craft what Olga Tokarczuk described as a “fourth-person” narrator. I’m probably ending up with this trope instead: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LemonyNarrator

    Still fun though.

    raemariz,
    @raemariz@spore.social avatar

    Olga Tokarczuk:

    I also dream of a new kind of narrator―a “fourth-person” one, who is not merely a grammatical construct of course, but who manages to encompass the perspective of each of the characters, as well as having the capacity to step beyond the horizon of each of them, who sees more and has a wider view, and who is able to ignore time. Oh yes, I think this narrator’s existence is possible.

    Sigh I have been watching episodes of The Ark Season 1 on Peacock. The vibe feels like mid-90's TV, mid-priced. Not silly enough to emulate the original BSG, not smart enough or dark enough to be BSG the reboot. Not principled enough for a Star Trek series. Not busy enough for Lost in Space. I think the cute geniuses are getting on my nerves. It all feels very glossy. Hmm. Still watching it though. Like drinking a Budweiser. 😜 Gross, but sometimes all you have.

    Thoreau,

    @kazarnowicz I decided feels like Baywatch in Space.
