That new series "Elsbeth" (on CBS, Paramount+, and maybe other places) feels a lot like Columbo. It's structured the same way – you know "whodunit" from the beginning and the main character is easy for the murderer to underestimate but she's lovable and shrewd. The entertainment value is in watching Elsbeth reel them in, inviting them to incriminate themselves, until she ultimately catches her quarry.

Just pushed out a new version of "Murder Most Foul", my 7DRL submission from 2023, where you solve a procedurally generated mystery by searching the mansion for clues and deducing the murderer using a logic puzzle.

This new version has a few bug fixes for some issues reported by the intrepid krzhang.

Looks like the entries have been released for people to check out. I had a trip to Washington DC in the middle of it so I didn't have nearly as much time to work on it that I usually do, but I still got something done.

It's a superhero-themed roguelike styled as if it were made for a 1970's-era Radio Shack TRS-80 computer.

Free (including IAP-free and ad-free) and playable in your browser.

Haven't participated in before, but here goes.

I'm on day 4 of the game jam, so I'm sharing a weird roguelike game I'm working on.

The idea was to imagine a superhero-themed roguelike for a TRS-80-like computer from the late 1970's.

It's playable in its current state below.

Sadly, I won't have much time to work on it in the coming days, so it was somewhat rushed, and most likely won't get any significant improvements until after the jam timeline.

Pushed up a draft submission for my 7DRL.

The idea was to make a superhero-themed roguelike as if it were created for the old TRS-80 computers sold at Radio Shack back in the late 70's.

There's still plenty of time before the end of the game jam, but I will not have any time to continue working on it, sadly, except maybe a little bit tonight to knock back any bug reports. I wanted to add a lot more, but at least it's playable and winnable.

Been looking around at some sprite tilesets on itch, considering using one for 7DRL.

I'm leaning towards the superhero idea, but of course most tilesets are either sidescroller or dungeon-themed.

So I think I'm going to have to adapt one of my own tilesets, like my weird-as-hell 13x13 tileset that I used for "Murder Most Foul".

Or, you know, go old-school ASCII.

Or maybe I go with my TRS-80 style emulation idea and do the superhero thing with it.

Too many options!

Other ideas I've had for 7DRL:

  • Wild west gunslingers.
  • Sequel to "No Crypto" that takes on more recent tech issues like AI, voter suppression, and surveillance society. (Might be too depressing to throw myself into.)
  • Low fantasy "Conan" type game with detailed combat with feints, parries, etc.
  • WW2 squad-based game.
  • Slasher movie survival.
  • Heist-planning roguelike.

So many ideas, so little time to implement them!

Yikes! The starts in NINE DAYS.

I've gotta come up with an idea!

Here's a page that has six of my entries from previous years:

  • Murder Most Foul (mystery logic)
  • Fable on your Table (papercraft, won #2 overall!)
  • Battle Weary (screen reader friendly)
  • Piratical (pirate-themed roguelike!)
  • Arkham After Midnight (procgen horror investigations)
  • No Crypto for Old Men (hacking sim, political, critical of encryption backdoors)

Our studio is hosting some food researchers this week as we start work on another educational game about food safety.

They're wonderful, funny, caring people, and it's going really well.

The only weird part is the meals. Turns out it can be a little intimidating to order lunch in front of a table full of food safety experts!

I wish there were a game that captured the feel of . I even tried to make one: https://derekcaelin.itch.io/the-captains-log

Here's the thing. The best thing about the show is not the space fights. It's not about the strange new worlds. Strictly speaking, it's not even the resource management. It was about the people interacting with each other and being good to each other while navigating peril.

That's not something you get from FTL, or Eve Online. Mass Effect comes close.

lonespelunker,
@lonespelunker@mastodon.social avatar

@derek

Heh. You and me both! I tried to make a solo tabletop RPG that captures the feeling of captaining a ship with a close crew. Most sci-fi games are skin-of-your-teeth survival, grunge future, or dystopian, and doesn't really capture the more idealistic or social aspect of captaining.

The posts about Dungeons and Dragons turning 50 and people posting pictures of their original white box books got me nostalgic. So I pulled this out.

Know what this is?

lonespelunker,
@lonespelunker@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 It's pretty neat to look at. The part that became D&D is a "fantasy supplement" in the back of the book, almost like an afterthought. Heh.

lonespelunker,
@lonespelunker@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480

My older brother was an avid wargamer, and bought it off the store shelves when he was a kid. He bequeathed it to me a decade later when I started getting into D&D. It's been in our family the whole time.

You'd think it'd be valuable, but I don't think I'd get more than a couple hundred for it if I tried to sell it. It's not exactly in pristine condition.

Anyway, wouldn't part with it because it's more about the memories and meaning than the money. Wanna bequeath it myself some day!

There should be a word for the very specific type of shame that happens when a person that knows what's up (👍🏿), hopes to be nominated alongside highly talented but underrepresented people that they admire, only to be horrified and ashamed as they themselves are nominated, while the underrepresented people that they look up to, are not.🙂🙃

Adele -> Beyonce.

Ryan Gosling -> Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.

Happens a lot. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Is there a better question (or set of questions) to pose? Ones which, if used as a performance target without the nuance of full text responses, would do a better job producing desirable results?

The judge overseeing
trial decided late last night that with respect to any testimony, the court will take “such measures as it finds appropriate to avoid circumvention of its rulings and of the law.”

But even though Carroll’s lawyers presented the court with a menu of options to prevent that testimony becoming a new episode of The Trump Show, the court’s order gives no hint what measures he’s considering or will employ. Stay tuned.

WebMD’s parent company, Internet Brands, released a cringey and abusive internal video threatening their employees to #returnToOffice. “We aren’t asking or negotiating at this point”, the CEO says. “Don’t mess with us”, the video reads at the end. The video features employees dancing and celebrating RTO (at gunpoint? or at least under threat of firing by HR?).

I know corporate videos are all kinda crappy, but this one is…spouse-beating levels of terrible.

Printed out one of the cards I mentioned yesterday in the little heartbreaker game I am working on. Took a few iterations but I think it has an approachable layout now. Was worried the text would be too small but it’s okay. (And it will be PNP so people who want to print it larger can.)

The frame elements are derived from a layout resource offered by penflower ink - you can find it on itch.

OpenAI claims it is "impossible" to create AI tools like ChatGPT without copyrighted material.

That's a lie.

Sure, it might be expensive to create them, perhaps even prohibitively so for their particular financial situation, because they need to legally acquire said copyrighted materials.

But it is not at all "impossible".

Just like the rest of us, if you can't figure out how to pay for it, you can't just steal it, even if you're planning on making something useful with it.

I asked my friends at game night last night if they had heard about the Microsoft copilot thing. Two thirds of them work in the tech industry so I thought maybe they’d be up on it or have interesting opinions.

They hadn’t heard about it. So I told them Microsoft was adding a new keyboard key to launch an AI assistant, and they got this bemused look on their faces.

They asked me if I was leading up to a joke.
