This morning I've basically been going down a deep rabbithole around the recent supposed MH370 footage.

For those who don't know (it's not prevalent in major news as of now) there's been some footage from 2014 which has been dug up and connected to the disappearance of the now almost legendary Malaysian Airlines flight 370.

The footage consists of two videos uploaded to a now removed youtube account. The first depicts supposed FLIR footage from a surveillance UAV of a Boeing-777 being surrounded by a set of 3 orbs, then 'teleported' or 'vaporized' from view. The second shows a satellite view of the same thing.

Now, before I continue, let me get something straight. While the concept of UAPs/UFOs intrigue me, I'm not...ya know...one of those types. I like to look at these phenomena not because I want to believe that aliens are among us and visiting earth, but because there IS something there and it's interesting whatever it turns out to be. Still, I take everything with a grain of salt, and that's part of the fun.

Anyway. There's a big discussion going on about the footage on r/UFOs - now, most of the time about half of that subreddit is, once again...that type. But with this there's been a lot of amazingly in-depth discussions and aviation experts coming forth, and something about these videos is different. Everything seems to match up with actual aviation reports, and the video itself is impeccable for it's time. If this where to be a hoax, the amount of work required for the attention to detail here would take an entire team of filmaking crew, even today. The drone rocks in the wake of the plane, the engine heating covers the bottom of the aircraft, the patterns of the orbs match up with the satellite footage.

And it lines up with the aviation report for the flight. Multiple radars detected a set of 3 anomolous 'blips' alongside the aircraft, as well as the plane itself performing manuvers that aren't even possible during a nosedive. Nearing the end of radar coverage, the plane's transponder was shut off, leaving it only detectable through active radar. 37 seconds later, radar contact was lost. This 37 second period lines up perfectly with the time the orbs appeared until the 'teleport'

Once again, take this all with a grain of salt. It could still just be an elaborate hoax. But I'm on the fence here.

So the new laptop has a slight issue. Every now and then a sliver of the top of the screen flickers white...it has done the same on linux/KDE, windows and even a tty shell, so it's probably a hardware issue, right?

Loose screen connector maybe? I'm scared to re-connect the connector because on my old laptop it took a lot of fiddling to get it back in and working.

About a month or two ago I stepped on my not-yet-used devboard. Bent the pins and caused the board to warp a little pit, but it was fairly easy to pull them back into position and I don't care much about the shape. However, the micro-USB connector would then only work some of the time.

I was just fiddling around, taking a look at the connector because I knew I would have to re-connect it. While I was doing so it came off in my hands...but luckily both the pins on the back of it and the pads of the are in good condition, which will make it a lot easier.

Considering whether I should be responsible and wait until Hobart Hackerspace tomorrow for the heatgun + experienced people or just try and solder it myself...

I am thinking about making an ESP32 weather station. What would be an appropriate battery to power it through the night, while also being recharged/powered by a 2.5w 5v 150x130mm solar panel in the day (also accounting for cloudy days)?

would an 800mAh LiPo be enough?

Would it be more sensible to use 433mhz for the increased range, or 915 for the decreased interference from all the other devices using 433? ()

@warkolm finally getting around to completing my allsky cam. Just a quick question: I'm getting a bunch of timeout errors with the https://github.com/AllskyTeam/allsky codebase. Apparently it's quite common for ASI120s. Did you have any issues and if so, what was the fix?

Planning on making a skywatching pi using the HQ cam and a 180° fisheye lens. Intend to contribute to the global meteor network, but also try some experiments of my own with opencv and things.

Just saw what looked to be a satellite, but it appeared to resemble two very closely packed dots instead of one. Like maybe twice the width apart than the xamidimura constellation. Checked, ISS isn't due to pass over for another half an hour, and it's on the other half of the sky.

Two craft undergoing rendezvous maybe? it was certainly something in orbit because it was going in a straight line at a constant speed. Probably a little slower than the ISS.

Roughly 6:14pm AEST, Hobart TAS, going south-westerly to north-westerly.

I have a school project due tomorrow involving controlling a heater to heat a room based on electricity prices/inside temp

I was originally going to use a switching mechanism to actuate the switch using a stepper motor but...that did not work. And there is no time left to get it working.

So I need to improvise to get it working...and I know exactly how to do it, it's just going outside the rules a bit. Instead of flipping a switch on the heater, I want to use a relay to directly control the input current. However, I've never worked with mains voltage (I know how it works, but still) and we were told not to do anything with it when the project started.

Do you think it's worth going out and buying a relay, then making an ESP-controlled power socket?

Long story short, I've been noticing these short flashes in the sky, almost like a camera flash from high up. They're really bright, like brighter than venus or even a plane in the distance, and flash for a fraction of a second. As I said, just like a camera flash from a kilometre away. Usually they'll flash with a period of 10-30 seconds for a few times (or maybe I just didn't watch for long enough), and seem to drift a small amount. Can't quite tell between the flashes if it is a straight line or not. There are countless other people who have seen them too.

My suspicion: a high-altitude sattelite or piece of space debris rolling over and catching the sun. The only problem with this is that it seems way too bright for that. Can't be an iridium flare because those grow brighter and then darker over about 15 seconds, they aren't just a flash.

To the point, are there any people willing to act as a secondary observer so as to triangulate the altitude? then it would be a simple matter of looking for passes of tracked objects at the time and see if any match. I am in tasmania, aus, so needing someone in mainland australia, the higher up the better (for more accuracy). Would need to set up some form of camera to observe it, higher the fov the better to capture more of the sky, and mounted on a levelled surface/tripod.

Here are two videos I found that capture exactly what I saw:

Making a metroidvania-style thing in #cplusplus and #SDL2 inspired by #hollowknight. Don't know how far it'll go, but as linus torvalds once said, "This'll just be a small project, not anything big like the other contenders (or something like that)"

Currently finishing off a HK-style character controller system. It looks jaggedy, but I know that's just because of the lack of any animations, so the next step will be to integrate spritesheets and such. Then level elements and a loading system.

Was just out for a night walk. I can't tell if my eyes are playing tricks, but I felt like I could see short flickers in the city light haze reflected off the air; kept walking, it seemed like it was happening in the streetlights too. Could there be something happening with the power grid?

pretty cool

mightyspaceman, to Paranormal
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

Not getting conspiratorial but...at this point I think evidence has just been getting stronger and stronger. I am a believer that extraterrestrial life exists somewhere in the universe, probably just microbes, but I would never think that there would be aliens HERE, on earth...the distances are just too huge. Lately I've been questioning that more and more though...and the fact the the US government is beginning to take this seriously is just crazy to me. It means that all of the historical reports...or at least, a fraction of them have a whole other level of reputability now.

take the classic tic tac case. Whatever these things are...they are physical. We know that, because of the multiple accounts of radar sightings, distant visuals and actual encounters with navy aircraft...and actual footage. And the characteristics that they show mean that whether it be extraterrestrial or made by another some other country or whatever, either way...it's just crazy. Right outside our realm of understanding. Things travelling from the top of the atmosphere to sea level in seconds, and showing up as completely cold on thermal cameras...
