Yes, isn't that cool? You could do it right now, but it doesn't work on the free tier WordPress.com hosted sites. Instructions in the link of this post:

@louu No idea. There's quite a discussion about that here. He's encouraging everyone collectively to eat less meat, especially beef.

I'm old. How old? So old that I still can't bring myself to put a space in a filename.

    mikeblake,

@woodpunk I was one of the last holdouts of keeping the filename length to 8 characters.

Any thoughts on https://github.com/TryQuiet/quiet as a slack/discord replacement?

    mikeblake,

@PragmaticAndy looks useful. I see the note about "not audited" but still , many great use cases. Well structured, I like the "insular" networks. I will give it a try.

The is really great about teaching the causes and effects of climate change. This piece, "2 degrees", by Parker Sketch is on the second floor.

Idalia got me thinking about how many storms have hit the past few years. I found this dataset from , then used to spin up a notebook. Sure enough, as is known already, Tropical Storms are becoming more frequent.

    mikeblake,

Then I looked at the duration of the storms. Since 1850, has faithfully recorded the locations of each storm every 6 hours. By taking the average number of storm entries per year, we can see also that over time, storm duration has steadily increased. Does NOAA simply follow them for longer than they used to? We can look closer at this later, but I'm just using their 'header' records for this graph.

    mikeblake,

Next, what about storm intensity? This graph looks at the max WindSpeed obtained each year since 1850. It seems the storms are grown stronger over time.

    #tropicalStorm
    #climate
    #ClimateChange
    #ClimateCrisis

    mikeblake,

What about the size of each storm? Are they getting bigger ... any guess?? The data seems to say they are. This is the max Wind Radius obtained by storms , per year.

    mikeblake,

This all reminds me of old articles from #theOnion that would quote studies from "The Center for really Obvious Things". I have more questions than answers now. How did #NOAA data collection change over time? Did they miss/undersize a few storms before having satellite imagery? Do the fluctuations on these charts coincide with #elNiño, #LaNiña? Are we ready to stop using #fossilFuel yet?

    #tropicalStorm

    mikeblake,

    @dsacer Really cool, Thank you!

    mikeblake,

@dan613 Nice! That decline is subtle, and may go away adding the last 5 years. IT would be nice to look at all Tropical Storms (>34 knots), I'll definately play with this data some more.

@mikeblake so far I'm not seeing much reporting of massive storm surge. The most I've seen was 6.8 feet for Cedar Keys which while a lot isn't close to the 12-16 feet forecasted. I don't think the surge lags behind the hurricane so are we just not seeing the reports yet or did the Gulf Coast just get lucky?

    mikeblake,

@taoish @enmodo The surge follows the wind and the tide. So after the storm goes onshore, it's tail continues to pull the water ashore. For the gulf , high tide was at 2:30 AM, and the storm was still a few hours away from land. So the gulf got a little break there as the tide was receding at landfall. With that in mind, there's a huge variance in where gets hit the worst. In this case, there's a lot of nature preserves along the Big Bend where the some surges may not have been measured. I did hear stories of buoys recording massive surges though.

    mikeblake,

    @taoish @enmodo
The had over 10 ft surge, and reversed the direction of the Steinhatchee river. I never heard of that happening before.

The calm before the storm. Of all the cams in this #idalia #weathercam thread, the #SteinhatcheeRiver #webcam is probably the closest to where #hurricaneIdalia will make landfall, as a #category3 storm.

    https://climatejustice.rocks/@mikeblake/110974398967752472

    mikeblake,

the #SteinhatcheeRiver #webcam did not survive #idalia landfall just a few miles to the northeast. With winds blowing straight in from the ocean, the dock is likely underwater now.

    mikeblake, to Florida

    🧵
Here's some live cams for tracking the progress of #hurricaneidalia along the #BigBend of the coast of #Florida.

Some (most?) of these cams will go offline overnight when the storm arrives. It will be interesting to check ob them at daybreak. We'll travel north along with #idalia, starting with #Clearwater beach. Tropical force winds , (34 knots or 39 mph) should arrive by midnight.

    https://www.myclearwater.com/Visit-the-Beach/Watch-Live-Video-of-Clearwater-Beach

    mikeblake,

A good 50 mi south of where made landfall, the Beach Cam is clear once again, showing almost no beach left right now, waves coming right up to the boardwalk.
