I love it!!! INSANE sinks, WEIRD art, WILD ceilings, AMAZING kitchen, views, colors galore, a pond, a party shower and much, MUCH more. Several of you sent me this gem! 🧵

In my house, there is a door in the kitchen that goes to the basement stairs. We put a cat door in it, and a fancy one at that. It has switches so that you can control which directions the cats can move. We needed this because our 3-year-old cat Janet wants to play, and 8-year-old Phoebe does not, so Janet ends up in time out to give Phoebe a break. It took Janet MONTHS to figure out the door as a concept. This week she figured out the switches and time-out is no more.

The troublemaker

@night_chrono @Bridgemakes They also have them that can be keyed to the cats microchips if they have them:

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@night_chrono @Bridgemakes Those units, while expensive, can be programmed with I think up to 80 unique chip IDs . I don't know how complicated the process is. I also know they have collars that replace the chip IDs. You could possibly add and remove IDs to decide when kitties are allowed through and when they are not.

So it turns out that most everyone that works on my contract is in their 20's. Occasionally a song will come on the radio that they consider old and they all start talking about how they used to listen to it as children.

Then they try to engage me in their conversation and I feel ancient.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@Bridgemakes If it's any consolation you're working with people the age of some of my children... Now where did I put that aspercreme...

@rmhogervorst @Bridgemakes I mean is there anywhere else to do a truly dangerous experiment?

(No really, is there? I've got some hella unstable isotopes and I just assumed the only place to play with them was right next to the dilithium chamber)

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@Bridgemakes @rmhogervorst I can neither confirm, nor deny any correlation between these events...

Also, why were you cooking targ in the intermix chamber... Never mind I don't think I want the answer to that question.

@Bridgemakes @rmhogervorst Right. What was I thinking. Carry on.

Or Gul Dukat

mikey,

@NickGates I'm surprised everyone is choosing bear. I've seen Dukat get his ass kicked regularly. I don't see anyone here besting a bear hand to hand...

On a multi-person video call this morning, we were asked what podcasts we listen to.

I didn't get a chance to chime in but here's my answer:

None regularly. I don't have the time, even at fast playback, to listen to something linear that I could scan much more quickly if it was text.

Podcasters, please post transcripts.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@dangillmor Funny. I find myself in the opposite position. I am tending towards consuming more audio media, as I can do that while working on other things, while I'm having to confine my written word consumption to short form like news articles and short papers for lack of time.

the thing that’s both and about home heating systems is that the heat and/or cooling only works in 2 degrees increments

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@kmmfoo This depends on the particular system. Some HVACs have configurable deadbands and sways for heating and cooling. They don't recommend narrowing them both for efficiency and for the sake of the equipment, but some smart hardware can have deadbands of a degree or two and sway of 0.5 degrees.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@kmmfoo I fiddle a lot with this; I have a home assistant server and smart thermostats. I've tinkered with the dead bands and with supplemental heat sources, trying to manage them with the same system and different temp settings.

And look yes most people know how to say CAT but it's extra special when it's your young firstborn

    do any of you use a company that has a MOBILE FRIENDLY administration/moderation interface? it's gotta be one of the ones where you pay for it and they keep it updated for you, i don't want to fiddle with it too much, but i need to be able to do the admin/mod stuff that keeps it going FROM MY PHONE. i use android. it doesn't have to be mastodon specifically just something that hooks into the microblogging fediverse or whatever

    mikey,
    @mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

    @NoraReed I don't personally use them, as I do most of the server work myself, but I've heard lots of good things about Masto Host:
    https://masto.host/

    mikey,
    @mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

    @NoraReed I'm not sure what all you would need to login to their site to manage. I know they do the upgrades and server management. I can tell you the admin portions of the Mastodon web interface are accessible using a phone browser. So you can do moderation, account management, federation management, etc. from your phone. Does take a little getting used to.

    @vagina_museum Reading a thread on possible issues with weeping angel/ dalek hybrids or mementos looking like them being left at the Vagina Museum is possibly the best reason to be on Mastodon.

    @molly0xfff TBH they are just saying the quiet part out loud. Cloud hasn't been cheaper in a lot of scenarios for a while now. But most orgs eat the cost for convenience and because corporate budgets are just easier to work out that way.
