My experience with #mobian so far on the #Librem5 compared to #PureOS Byzantium:

  • Most applications run much faster
  • The repository is obviously much more up to date
  • The modem wakes up much slower for incoming phone calls while in suspend. Some of the phone calls were not shown in the UI at all.
  • The micro SD Card reader has similar issues with suspend as with PureOS. Sometimes after supend the card can not be read anymore.

But right now I really love @mobian it is impressively snappy ❤️

Notes on the quest to get the alarm clock to wake up the phone from suspend: this executed as user mobian actually resumed a L5:
systemd-run --collect --user --unit=alarm-clock --on-active="1m" --timer-property=WakeSystem=true gnome-clocks
Resuming without root permissions seems to work now (progress)!

There are still bugs, also saw https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/29245

Now, gnome-clocks "just" needs to call the required systemd timers to make the phone wake up on time...

@mobian is back in business! Now with a new hoster and server, blog, repository, and image downloads should be back up again.

There might be a few old DNS cache leftovers which should resolve themselves soon.

Yay for good backups and sorry for the downtime!

mobian, to random German

Just a reminder that the @mobian repo, image downloads and website are still down due to a hardware issue. There are backups of everything but the bring up is taking longer than expected.

Had we known it takes this long, we would have provided a temporary solution. Sorry, but we'll be back! 💪

mobian, to random

Our servers have recently gone belly up, so if you have been trying to reach our images, website, or blog and haven't, that is why.

We don't have an ETA for when it will be back up, but we are trying to do it ASAP.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi all,

If you are on Trixie, please do an apt update and apt upgrade as soon as possible. The upstream of xz-utils contains a backdoor: https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4

Thanks @airtower for persisting in your efforts to create an upstream wifi driver for the . Looking forward to reap the fruits of your efforts 🤩.

Small present: @awai announces mobile mobian images being build by default.

Is there a CLI based RSS reader that just works like a tail -f? I don't want any fancy UI or anything, just something I can run at the command line that monitors a single RSS feed. I feel like this should be something easy.

mobian,

@mike Like rsstail? 😉

https://python-rsstail.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

rsstail -i 3 -u example.com/rss.xml -n 0 | while read line
do
aplay /some/sound/file.wav
echo "$line"
done

If you are not happy with your on-screen-keyboard () on Mobian, you might want to try out -osk-stub which is @agx's toy keyboard. I like the layout a lot, apparently it even features local text prediction (have not tried that yet).
Remember, it is a toy, so hold back on your support requests.

Installation TL;DR: apt install phosh-osk-stub && update-alternatives --config Phosh-OSK

P.S. The screenshot is using PureOS rather than Mobian, but it is available there just as well

Uhh, now what kind of device could be running mobian there??? 😉

Is this @fairphone really a ?!

mobian,

Credit for the initial bringup and development work go to @awai, by the way. Should have said so in the initial toot!

A popular set of alternative Android Apps was sold to a company with a history of slapping adds onto the existing Play Store user base. If you run a GPLv3'd app from installed through the app store, you might want to disable auto-updates...

... or change to a FOSS respecting distribution.

Since https://fosstodon.org/@linmob/111437486318142093 is not entirely unpopular: If you are wondering if I recommend this setup: I'm torn. Two batteries make the PinePhone Pro more useful, and getting once one gets used to the keyboard, it's nice to type on.
If you have a PinePhone Pro that's sitting in a drawer, go for it - if not, there are lots of micro laptops out there that may be better by having things like a backlit keyboard, a pointing device, or a slightly bigger, not 2:1 screen.

mobian,

@linmob this reminds me so much of the Asus eeePC which I owned in the 7" form factor. Nifty market niche back then, unfortunately a little weak in terms of performance back then.

@fosdem developer rooms have been announced!
After a crammed half day of talks on #LinuxOnMobile last time, we are very happy that there will be a full Sunday dedicated to mobile topics around true Linux OSes at #fosdem2024.
We will announce a Call for Participation as soon as it is published. We will coordinate with our Friends at @postmarketOS, sailfish OS, etc to put together something interesting.

Ugh my new usb ethernet adapter shows up as a CD drive :(

mobian,

@martijnbraam admit it! The solder iron simply fell on those pins by accident and you just invented the whole story to sound smart !1!
Seriously, why do manufacturers go to these lengths to make their products worse?

mobian, to random

Mobian started as a hobby project, triggered by the excitement of finally being able to hack one’s mobile phone at will. It is fair to say that the device that made it possible back then was the original PinePhone. However, after running once again into the same difficulties we experienced over and over, we’re wondering whether maintaining support for this device is still worth the effort…

mobian,

Had the need to charge an all electric Kia recently and guess what: both the charging stations app and the vendor's app are proprietary so how would I know when charging finished?

Turns out people around figured out the vendor API so I could use that to have a small app to monitor the charging status on my running

mobian,

@martijnbraam @agx make it so! Please 😅

Our recent article about the Librem 5 noted that its new $999 price tag after a $300 price cut is still... a lot. But it looks like there is a slightly cheaper option: Purism is selling refurbished models of the Linux phone for $799. https://shop.puri.sm/shop/librem-5-refurbished/

mobian,

@linmob @s31bz @bradlinder Yeah, the is the one phone that most mobian developers currently recommend and use. Both purism and mobian devs are quite active with migrating things into @debian proper. We are aware of the price tag, but would like to reiterate that this actually includes salaries for mobile Linux developers.
