Why do people here take so much about other social networks I wonder.
Be careful with that. You don't want to piss off John. 😬

@stux I liked the idea of the Flying Dutchman being a flying pirate. 😁
But that's not enough to turn they into a game innit?

I'm gonna go on a Mastodon break for a while*.

Probably (shit)posting instead on BlueSky. I hope to see many of you there, eventually!

@senj no block feature? Have they learned nothing? Nobody with any kind of fame should join that monstrosity then.

chucker, to random
@chucker@norden.social avatar

Please tell me this can be turned off somehow? I have, like, twenty-five years of muscle memory of ’s sections being a horizontal bar at the bottom. Now they’re a vertical bar at the top, which requires more space and doesn’t do anything useful.

(In the Windows version, there’s a hidden registry key… for now. But what about the Mac version?)

Also didn’t ask for that world button. (No, I’m not going to use Outlook for my personal stuff.)

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@chucker on Windows it's an option in your settings, but it's not obvious which one it is, really. No registry hacking required.

If I click on your download link and it's a GitHub I am not downloading it lol

That site is utterly incomprehensible to me lmao, I never find how to install something and I don't know what "building" is

Please give me an exe or uwp instead, just a once click thing

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@dogo @thomasfuchs @Devourer_ITA I was just about to mention the releases indeed. It's a handy way to offer downloadable exes and archives. As a dev it's great because you don't have to figure out where you can host the binaries.

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@theastropath @thomasfuchs @Devourer_ITA I just tend to link to them from the readme. 😁

🆕 blog! “Why aren't there more visual programming languages? (An ode to DRAKON)”

I think the computer programming industry is about to reach a reckoning. No, not because ChatGPT can poorly plagiarise buggy code - but because a whole generation of kids have grown up with Scratch. And they'll want professional tools which have Scratch's level of usa…

👀 Read more: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/04/why-arent-there-more-visual-programming-languages-an-ode-to-drakon/

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent we'll see. It's not like there haven't been attempts. But it's always so much handier to edit code as a text file, instead of clicking around in some visual editor.
Same goes for reading code imo.

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent maybe. I always found the visual things hard to read, because a few lines of code end up being a bunch of blocks with lines in between and quickly spawn over multiple screens when the code gets bigger and more complex.
I'm thinking things like SQL server SSIS and Selligent workflows.
The stuff of nightmares.

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent you know what's also great about simple text files? There are so many tools that allow you to manipulate them so easily. Searching with grep, editing with powerful editors like Vim, you can index them for search, you can generate them with shell scripts.

So unless those visual tools end up producing text files, I don't think it's ever going to take off.

Too many people are focusing on (prevention of takeover) as the most important thing about Mastodon. Here's why I think that's wrong: even a decentralised network can be a "freeze peach" cesspit of hatred, just like Twitter and other libertarian techbro social networks, if it chooses to be. The most important thing about Mastodon is that it chooses not to be.

bluesky already feels more “natural” than mastodon. it’s reminding me a lot of linux vs. macos, where mastodon is linux (full of features but janky and requires effort to use) and bluesky is macos (less feature rich but smooth and easy to use). i can see bluesky’s DAUs eventually surpassing mastodon’s based on that alone.

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@ericajoy sounds like it's going to include lock-in as well, just like macos 😉

I find the whole instances-based approach slightly suspect for social networks. Most people have more than one interest or group of friends.

A portable account that can be a member of multiple instances would be nice, maybe. (No idea how the details would work in practice.)

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs yeah, that's why I picked the more general server because I couldn't commit to a single niche. Smaller servers are also more at risk of shutting down if the admin gets sick of it oslt.

    How is the local timeline on a server like mastodon.social even usable? It must be incredibly noisy. Not to mention the federated timeline even.

    I spend quite a lot of time on the local and federated timelines on our small server and they both have a lot of interesting stuff going on. Of course federated is a bit random but not to a degree that makes it unpleasant.

    Local feels like the little cafe at the corner where the usuals hang out. It’s neat.
