In better news, I published my first article on Medium, talking about my thoughts after spending the better part of a weekend experimenting with COBOL.

It's available here as a permanetaly free link, but I would love if folks with follow and give a clap: https://medium.com/@ncommander/a-weekend-learning-cobol-3ce35c490dab?source=friends_link&sk=ab05dcc66e4dedda73a0a9b07c182814

So I've been toying w/ an idea for a few weeks on creating a boot disk to help get new users involved with vintage computing and drastically reduce the pain of setting up Windows on 90s/early 2000s computers.

The biggest question is it even possible to use FreeDOS as a base for this (since I can't redistribute Microsoft DOS), so that's what we're exploring ont he next stream at 11PM EST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEOZMqwM_gY

Tonight, I helped find a bug in libreadline, that required looking to the actual POSIX specification to determine what, if anything, is the sane thing to do if your locale is broken.

This is not the YouTube video I expected to make, but I just uttered the following in :

[2:50:09 AM] <NCommander> This is getting fairly close the eldritch tomes of lore that AT&T used to forge the One Ring deep in the heart of Murray Hill

I just had to factory reset my keyboard after some how I managed to swap WASD and my arrow keys.

I can't help but feel like a world where my keyboard needs a reboot means we're rapidly approaching peak smart device.

Waking up and finding a Content ID strike for a piece of music that doesn't even sound like whats on air.

I've actually won content ID disputes before, but I've never gotten flagged on content that's been up for months at this point.

One of the biggest problems is that copyright laws in the United States very much hinder any attempt to preserve any of this. Awareness on the issue is growing though, and maybe it might even be possible to try and lobby for change.

Repair bills are getting through state congresses at this point, so its def. something to look towards.

I've gotten flagged with a second content ID claim. Same copyrighted song, expect this time, its in a section of the stream with no music and keytyping.

This is also a charity stream, and like, am I just going to keep getting an email day after day on this?

Honestly, for me personally, I learned with (t)csh, since it was the standard on many systems, and I just learned to accept whatever the standard installed shell was.

Progress in two screenshots:

The first is distributed.net crunching RC5-72 on the VAX. 8,188 keys on its single 25Mhz processor.

The second is my MacBook Pro, after I patched dnetc to build on Mac OS X/aarch64. 8.9 million keys!

Fun fact, did you know that clang as and gas use incompatible assembly syntaxes on an architecture that is less than two decades old?

Read my comment to find out how I dealt with this.

https://github.com/NCommander/dnetc-client-base/commit/8b176ceb92a800b6ff9fa448ebfecba5a8cee445

I actually did the math. It looks liks it checks 2^32 keys per work unit.

It would take the MicroVAX 8 days of number crunching to complete a unit.

Checking out -current via CVS is just kinda dreadful. I'm not thrilled on building this on a Pi either, but it's good to at least have a not entirely broken example either. I do wonder if it would be faster to check out elsewhere and rsync

ncommander,

@sayartyler its more "if New York is the World's Capital, then New Jersey is the World's Toxic Waste Dump".

It's also where the light at the end of the tunnel leads.

We proudly host more federal superfund sites per capita than any other place in the country by a wide margin.

As for me, I'm the child of third generation Italians, and a Cuban exile who was born in the United States.

Half of my culture got embargoed, and the other half has faded into English :/
