#BOTD Montague Summers. Described as "arguably the most seminal twentieth century purveyor of pop culture occultism", Summers was ordained as an Anglican deacon, but converted to Catholicism, styling himself as a priest despite having no diocese. Initially noted for literary scholarship, he became notorious for his books on witches, werewolves, vampires and demonology, for which he claimed to entirely believe. #books #occult

Were they really home to nightly orgies, bizarre initiations, black magic rituals and other wicked acts? Evelyn Lord picks through the rumours and hyperbole to paint an accurate portrait of their real activities and their many famous members.

This gorgeous tome features some of best and scariest tales of ancient Japan. Committed to paper at the turn of the 20th century, these chilling stories feature vengeful spirits, goblin-infested caves, and haunted tombs, all part of a world and culture almost entirely lost to modernity.

It started with a headache, then, within days, Susannah Cahalan was having violent fits, hallucinating, blacking out and attacking those around her. In this harrowing memoir, she recounts what happened when an unknown illness takes away your identity, and what it takes get it back again.

Though it may look like a terrifying costume from a folk horror ritual, this is in fact sniper camouflage. During the first world war, artist Lindsey Symington created these suits using blocks of natural colours and dried vegetation, to break up the outline of the sniper and make them disappear.

I missed William Hope Hodgson’s birthday yesterday, but I’m going to plug the bonus episode I did of his anyway. This is one of his best short pieces. And… you know… my reading ain’t bad either. Except maybe for my pronunciation of schooner.
