No accurate figures so it's up to the brilliance of @mike_honey_ @dbRaevn & a few others to estimate what's going on.

This suggests that over 1 million people have C0VID in Oz right now, & that almost half of the entire population has had C0VID in the last 6 months. These numbers are extraordinary.

🇳🇿"New Zealand is experiencing its highest peak in COVID-19 cases since December 2022, professor Michael Baker says."

"Despite the recommended isolation period now only being 5 days, Baker suggested people still getting a positive Covid-19 test wait to test again on day 6 or 7 before going back into society."

"The biology hasn't changed," Baker said, but there was more pressure for people to go back to work and school."

@kingtor @DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 I'm not sure I follow you, but it was vaguely interesting to me that the PCR test result was negative.

Still testing positive after 10 days of testing and 17 days of feeling sick.

Fuck Covid. And Fuck Cancer.

Logged an incident report at work explaining how I got this infection from a maskless co-worker because I was forced to be onsite and they knew their partner had "a mystery cold" and could work from home whenever they want but chose to come in anyway.

I don't believe anything will come of it, though.

COVID-19 and flu update Ballarat: Masks Still Matter in 2024 | thecourier.com.au

"MASKS still matter is the advice from the region's public health leader as the community faces rising cases of COVID-19 and influenza."

"If everybody who is symptomatic tests themselves, many will show they have COVID-19." - Dr Rob Grenfell, Grampians Public Health Unit chief strategy and regions officer

@auscovid19

Source: https://www.thecourier.com.au/story/8607418/covid-19-and-flu-update-ballarat-masks-still-matter-in-2024/

COVID-19 cases continue to impact bed availability and staffing at Grampians Health Ballarat Base Hospital with 14 COVID-positive patients in hospital as of Monday morning. This did not include patients with influenza. Dr Grenfell said both viruses were a serious concern, particularly for those at a higher risk of severe outcomes - and many people had loved ones under threat. "The issue for people out there are those with impaired immunity," Dr Grenfell said. "We're continuing to bring outbreaks in aged care centres under control...we're testing inpatients and those across our cancer wards. "If everybody who is symptomatic tests themselves, many will show they have COVID-19." The nation's drug regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administrator, has also been urging people to check their rapid antigen tests (commonly known as a RAT) and to not use a kit after its expiry or use-by date. City of Ballarat's free RAT program finished at the end of 2023. Dr Grenfell said all the health and hygiene lessons from COVID-19 still mattered to prevent viral outbreaks: social distancing; hand hygiene; good ventilation; wearing masks when in closed spaces and unable to social distance; and, keeping vaccinations up to date. He said masks do work as a line of protection and people should consider masking up once more. If sick - even with a sniffle - Dr Grenfell urged people to stay at home.

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 I wonder if I would've gotten covid if:

  1. I was allowed to wfh
  2. The people i work with would also wear masks
  3. My employer put in an effort to clean the shared air within buildings
  4. WHS laws were followed
  5. My union cared enough about workers rights to fight for 1, 2, 3 and 4.

@pfred60 @auscovid19 I did a test with 4 brands today. 3 expired and the Touch in date.

Only the Touch showed anything - again the barest shadow of a line, practically a hallucination. The other 3 showed nothing at all. What's this prove? Nothing, but it was interesting to perform, even if I'm quite over being swabbed.

5 positive RATs, vs 1 -ve PCR.

I assume I have covid.

Unfortunately the PCR result will be the only result on my medical record.

And today I return to work and one of my maskless coworkers tells me he was also off sick with covid last week, and laughing about giving it to me whilst denying it was him because "I can't prove shit" - as if anyone in my workplace would give a fuck even if I proved it beyond reasonable doubt by some magic or other.

Just a coincidence that he brought it to the office I'm forced to work from and he had several conversations about his wife's "flu" with me.

If only my employer was forced to provide clean air by some kind of workplace safety laws.

If only.

Victoria: Hundreds of patients died after catching COVID in Victorian hospitals, new data shows

Almost 1 in 10 patients who caught COVID in hospital died.

Documents obtained by ABC News under Freedom of Information laws reveal at least 6,212 patients caught COVID in hospital in 24 months — 3,890 in 2022 and 2,322 in 2023. Of those, 586 died — almost 6 per week, on average — with men dying at a higher rate than women (11 per cent vs 8 per cent).

Tasmania: COVID testing change ahead of winter illness season. By Blair Richards

"Public health authorities will drop a recommendation that Tasmanians register a positive COVID test, shifting the focus to monitoring for all acute respiratory illnesses."

@auscovid19

Source: https://www.themercury.com.au/news/tasmania/tasmanian-public-health-recommends-vaccinations-for-covid-flu-and-rsv/news-story/2b2005bcfc5ce56ec28c783d3677381d

And from Friday, Public Health will also dump its recommendation that Tasmanians register a positive Covid test result. Specialist Medical Advisor Shannon Melody said Tasmanians, particularly those at higher risk of illness, should be vaccinated ahead of the winter illness season. “Everyone aged six months and older is recommended to receive an annual flu vaccine – this is particularly important for certain groups at higher risk of serious illness from flu,” Dr Melody said. “All adults are eligible for a Covid-19 booster at least every 12 months, and older adults or those with severe immunocompromise every six months. A vaccine is also now available and recommended for older individuals to protect against severe illness from RSV.” Dr Melody urged parents of children aged between six months and five years to consider having their child vaccinated for the flu. Vaccine coverage for under-fives in Tasmania is low at around 30 per cent. “We really need that to be much higher. Children who contract influenza can become quite unwell, that includes healthy children,” Dr Melody said. Dr Melody said while the recommendation to register a positive Covid test was being removed, testing still had its place. “Testing remains really important to people who are at risk, because they are likely to be eligible for treatment and the earlier, they start treatment to more effective that treatment is,” she said.
Deputy Secretary for Community, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Dale Webster said vaccination and staying home when unwell would take pressure of the state’s hospital system. WHO CAN GET A FREE SHOT ANNUAL FLU VACCINE *Free flu vaccines are available for children aged 6 months to 5 years, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people over 65 and people with certain underlying conditions. COVID BOOSTER *People aged over 75 should (every six months). Adults aged 18 to 74 are recommended to get a booster every six to 12 months depending on their underlying health conditions RSV *People aged 60 and over with risk factors and is recommended for all people over 75 *People who fall outside these categories will need to pay for a vaccine at a pharmacy or GP

I want my 2019 life back. And I want the world to be safe. But both of those keep getting farther away thanks to the inaction of public health agencies. As the CDC weakens guidelines, it makes me LESS able to go out and enjoy life, because the CDC's actions increase the risks. With the mainstream media waking up about Long and the chronic dangers of repeat infections, I thought maybe we'd see more caution. Instead, my feelings of safety and normality are further away than ever.

My manager revoked my WfH agreement last August. Mine alone, not anyone else's. Literally anyone else in my team and others can WfH at their discretion. My manager is nominally on-site at all times and for the last year or so has been, in fact, on-site only 2-3 mornings per week at most.

My manager refused to let me take the office that became available which had a window that opens and independent air conditioning. My manager took that office for themself. For 2-3 mornings a fucking week. Because they didn't like the office they chose for themself last year.

South Australia: COVID rips through school staff rooms as hundreds call in sick. By Brad Crouch

SA Health reports there were 1418 cases recorded in the past week, down from 1479 cases the previous week, and no Covid-linked deaths – however with the threat receding many people may no longer be testing for mild symptoms or reporting positive home RAT tests. There have been 965,772 cases reported and 1715 deaths since South Australia’s first case was recorded on February 1, 2020. Meanwhile, information released to The Advertiser shows while more than 230 SA Health staff have been sacked since October 2021 for refusing the Covid-19 vaccination, only one has been terminated for refusing the similarly mandated dTpa vaccine booster (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis). SA Health says local health networks are responsible for ensuring staff comply with relevant policies, including vaccination requirements. “The (vaccination) policy covers the dTpa vaccine and other vaccines to ensure we meet our obligations from an occupational health and safety perspective,” a statement says. “Since 2020, only one employee out of more than 45,000 SA Health staff has had their role terminated for refusing the dTpa vaccine.” SA Health is aware of employees who are not compliant with booster requirements for dTpa, and staff are being sent reminders to get these boosters. “Appropriate disciplinary action may be taken if staff remain non-complaint, which could include suspension or termination of employment,” SA Health says.
