Every few weeks I try the Arc browser again. Definitely getting better, but still too many interface things that appear/disappear/hide/move, to feel comfortable. Feels a bit like trying to use one of Kai Krause’s apps back in the ‘90s. And… Arc is an absolute CPU hog, outdoing PHPStorm by 3x for just 3 tabs open vs PHPStorm with 3 projects open (MacStudio M1 Max)

Finally got around to trying the new UI for . Happy to say it works well with the Light Lite Colour Scheme, despite warnings suggesting some themes might not work correctly.

    In Quebec, the government just launched a new portal to help English speaking Quebecers learn french. Except, part of the portal is only in french… sort of tough if you don’t speak french, and second, slightly worse, no phone numbers or email addresses or websites for any of the places that offer the english courses. I guess they expect us to drive to the institute and hope they are open?

    Come on Quebec, you can do better than this.

    @hightechredneck Be sure to update your firmware before going live, given the recent tp-link disclosure https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/hackers-infect-tp-link-router-firmware-to-attack-eu-entities/

    Was getting a timeout once a week on DigitalOceans Redis DB. Switched back to our own Redis install, no more timeouts. Any else have issues with DigitalOcean Redis?

    outofcontrol,
    @outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

    @alex Sure that is most likely. I found it odd on a medium traffic site we would get the error so consistently. Same for MySQL DB on DO, but less frequent (1/m?). Shouldn't they have an upgrade process that doesn't interrupt traffic like that? We keep our instances up-to-date and I haven't see the errors when we do updates... yet :)

    outofcontrol,
    @outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

    @alex Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate you taking the time to outline how DO does the updates. Perhaps if we get more traffic it might be more useful to use DO for our Redis instance(s).

    You know, I bet a whole bunch of "onboarding people to Mastodon is hard because of the choosing an instance thing" could be mitigated by letting instance users generate and share invite codes to the instance they're using, which are effectively just links to that instance's signup page, but see how they'd already feel different?

    outofcontrol,
    @outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

    @danhon A colleague was very frustrated by the onboarding process of selecting an instance. Coming from Twitter, they struggled with the whole concept and still comment negatively about it. Definitely needs improvement, and your idea is a good idea.
