has died and been reborn around a dozen times. Yes, the company as it currently exists isn't the same as when Pong came out. Neither was it the same company as when Warner Brothers piecemeal sold it in the 1980s to Jack Tramiel, Mitsubishi, etc. Nor the same company when it was a Naamco sub-brand. Nor when Hasbro owned it.

Sure, Atari today isn't the same as it was in the 1970s, but the same is largely also true for Activision, SEGA, Rare, Square, etc.

@vwbusguy Fond memories of my computer teacher with his Atari and me with my Commodore Vic 20, debating endlessly which was better. Atari, Vic 20 and C64 will always hold a special place in my heart.

Given the iTerm hullabaloo, I tried Kitty (https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/). And I am unsure why I didn’t try it sooner, except having not heard of it. As a macOS and Linux user, it is more responsive, and miles easier to configure. Took about 15 minutes to get just how I had iTerm, and having all my configs in a simple .conf file means I can integrate with my dotfiles repo quite nicely. Bye-bye iTerm.

@shawnhooper Last night the temp went from 30 to 17 in under 30 minutes. From calm to heavy rain and wind in the blink of an eye. Then it was over just like that. No thunder. Tonight is hopefully nothing worse.

you don't need to blow leaves! they're just fucking leaves! it's literally in the name that you can just leave them there

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@riggbeck @sc_griffith Oh here in Montreal they go to great lengths to blow the leaves into big piles then bring in monster vacuums and suck up those piles. Often getting 4 blowers going at once. In the spring we typically get 1-2 weeks of 6 days a week and 12 hours a day of those “they really should be outlawed” leaf blowers. Insane.

Thank you . It was great the last.... 15 years or so.

But it looks like we have to part ways here... 🤷

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas No no no…. Tell me it ain’t so. 🤨 Link: https://iterm2.com/downloads/stable/iTerm2-3_5_0.changelog

This isn’t being forced on us, it appears to be optional, which is not a bad thing, in my opinion. Especially if it gets iTerm more market share, and us ai luddites can go on our way as usual.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas Your statement suggests you are supporting iTerm through donations. Would it make more sense to inform them no more donations as long as they keep up this silliness? For myself at least, changing to a new terminal is a bit of a struggle, so hurting myself to spite the developer seems a bit unproductive.

outofcontrol, (edited )
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@radmen @heiglandreas Sorry, not meant as a threat at all. If we don’t agree with how a project is progressing, we can stop supporting it. I’ll bow out of this conversation now. Apologies again.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@kboyd @heiglandreas In this case, yes, as AI has no place in any Terminal. Though I’d prefer to hear from my customer than have them vanish, even if they said “we can’t support you with this new feature.” If I was listening, and enough customers stopped supporting my project, it would be in the projects and projects users best interest to reassess. We could fork iTerm, remove the AI, and offer a version like Codium or Insomnium, without tracking and without AI?

(I work at Slack, opinions my own) A bunch of people are sharing viral social media posts saying that we train LLMs on customer data. It's a story that slots neatly into the hype/doom narrative around AI.

But it's not true — we even wrote a whole blog post about it last month: https://slack.engineering/how-we-built-slack-ai-to-be-secure-and-private/

Not discounting the other concerns around LLMs (e.g. hallucinations, environmental impact) that are totally legitimate.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@mattbrowndev @sebastian @derickr People are deservedly annoyed, partly because all these AIs are opt-out not opt in. And to make it more difficult, owners have to email you to opt out, instead of simply flicking a switch in their profile. I suspect you do this because you know most people don’t want to be a part of your AI in the first place, and this is the only way you can get enough users sucked into this AI.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@derickr @mattbrowndev @sebastian In addition, doesn’t their policy state that end-users cannot opt out, only, Customers can opt out. So you work in the EU remotely for a company in the USA, and that company doesn’t want to opt out because of freedumb of speech, then your screwed. Is someone who has a free tier slack group considered a customer? I will test this Tuesday when I start opting all my clients out. But alas, I assume the damage is already done for past messages.

Love Obsidian, but for the past 2-3 weeks it would freeze and get slow.
TIL

  1. Themes and plugins must be upgraded separately from core
  2. iCloud appears to not automatically download all files, or quietly reverts some files to cloud only, making indexing and search in obsidian super slow
    3.Pages with large markdown table with broken formatting can cause Obsidian to become unresponsive for over a minute each time you try to open that page. Suspect this is a bug?

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@sylumer I was always under the impression that Obsidian didn’t play nice with other cloud providers for syncing data. Would you have any advice on better cloud sync platforms? Will look at that plugin, thank you.

outofcontrol,
@outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

@sylumer Prefer not paying for Obsidians sync if possible, and using my own. Git isn’t really an option unless I get all fancy, as I have 3 machines to keep in sync. A dilemma still perhaps. Running NextCloud locally on a NAS which is nice, but requires being VPN’d into the house at all times when away. Not impossible, just another step to remember. Perhaps this is the way?

    I am not exaggerating this:

    I created a new hostname in DNS, then added it to my existing webserver config.

    It was online for 3 seconds -- 3! -- before getting a 404 request for /.git/config.

    If you're relying on obscurity to protect your services, get that right out your fool head today. You have about 3 seconds to get your act together.

    This morning, looking at my custom Claudebot rule:

    • Actions
      |- Currently banned: 696
      |- Total banned: 696

    That’s 696 IP addresses banned in the last 24 hours. Hitting hard and fast brings a small 4GB RAM VM to its knees.

    Today started with a text from my son travelling in Japan: “Help, stuck, credit card blocked a again.” Unable to call the bank from where he was, and since the card was on our family account, I was able to call. Bottom line: RBC gave super horrible customer service. Second call for unrelated task with Desjardin insurnace… made my day, best customer service ever... as usual.

    RBC is also invests heavily in Fossil Fuels, this clinched the decision to fully leave RBC.

    @jay The last few times we called to warn them ahead of time about travel plans, we were told we didn’t need to do that anymore. So we stopped doing that. One of todays issues was being disconnected after being on hold for 10 minutes. Calling back resulted in starting over and being told there was nothing wrong and they could not do anything. Best we can tell is that the first people fixed the issue.

    👮‍♂️ Hours of police training required by country:

    🇺🇸 USA: 652 hours
    🇨🇦 Canada: 1,040 hrs
    🇬🇧 UK: 2,250 hrs
    🇦🇺 Australia: 3,500 hrs
    🇩🇪 Germany: 4,050 hrs

    Killings by law enforcement in 2020:

    🇺🇸 USA: 1,021
    🇨🇦 Canada: 52
    🇦🇺 Australia: 16
    🇩🇪 Germany: 9
    🇬🇧 UK: 5

    According to The Institute for Criminal Justice Training Reform, Police shootings database

    outofcontrol,
    @outofcontrol@phpc.social avatar

    @statisticsworld IMO this data would be a lot more useful if it showed law enforcement killings per year per million people:

    🇺🇸 USA: 3
    🇨🇦 Canada: 1.3
    🇦🇺 Australia: 0.6
    🇩🇪 Germany: 0.11
    🇬🇧 UK: 0.07

    Still suggests more training could help, but I suspect there is a lot more involved than only training. Point taken none the less.
