of the day:
Have you ever used a fountain pen for a purpose that was not intended, or have you ever observed someone using a fountain pen in an odd way?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@penfount there was that horrific story a while ago, where someone’s boss forcibly “borrowed” a pen which they used to tear open a package. It was a Pilot Capless…

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@Autumn but it was genius-level sh!t

I wish Schmidt nibs came in extra fine.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jezlyn what do you mean? Pretty sure they do come in EF

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jezlyn which Schmidt nib unit model?

Check here: https://www.schmidtpenparts.com/collections/nibs

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jezlyn some nib units have EF (like FH241), some do not.

You could also ask FPNibs to grind whatever you want: https://www.fpnibs.com/collections/schmidt

Saw this quick review by MarcyMe of this year’s SE Pelikan Edelstein ink, Golden Lapis, seems to be same gold shimmer as in the Golden Beryl but with a blue base color.

Thoughts?

@toga I already have Bleu Ocean but that is slightly purplish

https://mountainofink.com/blog/jherbin-1670-bleu-ocean

I love Golden Beryl, but I feel like that one’s more unique, it’s hard to find actual golden color inks

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@pixiecata well, as you’d expect, Pelikans work great with it (=

here’s what I can think of off top of my head

  • what ink do I get? (Cartridges / bottle, don’t get India ink, etc)
  • how do converters work?
  • just inked and my pen doesn’t work, what do I do?
  • how to clean pen before first use
  • what’s the best cheap pen? (Could be a whole post onto itself)
  • good paper choices (notebooks, printer paper, cheap drugstore paper)
  • can lefties use fountain pens?
  • how do I decide which nib width to get?

> How can I fill a fountain pen without getting ink everywhere?

How do you answer this one?

Today my is the TWSBI 580 <F>, inked with Iroshizuku Tsutsuji. This is one of the most reliable pens in my collection, never dry and never skips a letter.

@YmirFP Tsutsuji, nice. I have a sample that’s in my queue to try (:

@YmirFP hey, good tip. I’ll throw it in one of my flex or stubs

@jezlyn I think it’s a bit darker than Dark Lilac but yeah the sheen pattern is similar

A question for the folks:

Do you have to stir sheening inks to see the sheen? I know that shimmer tends to sink and thus need stirring or shaking, but I've never heard this about sheening.

I have a pen filled with Organic Studios' "Nitrogen" that only late in use started showing sheen. The picture shows the clear difference between the first and last use of the sample. Hard to believe that it's the same ink.

The strange thing is that there are ball bearings in the pen!

paradoxmo, (edited )
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@keraba generally not, dye is in the solution so shaking isn’t really required. If you sometimes see sheen and sometimes don’t, I’d say that’s inconsistency in the paper.

Nitrogen will sheen on almost anything… perhaps it was diluted when you first put it in the pen? Did you have water in the feed maybe?

Me: barely dips pen nib into ink, only molecules touching
Pen: slurrrrrrp mmm, lots of ink.

How? Just how? I need an effing dip pen for all these swatchings.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@timelordiroh highly recommend Sailor Hocoro dip pen and nibs with optional reservoir. It’s what I used for my Inkvent stuff last Christmas.

friends: I've heard that the Pilot MR/Metropolitian in Europe uses the international standard converter. is there a good way for me to get that in the US? Bonus points if the plain silver one is available this way.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@turgon those US retailers will not carry the European international cartridge version of the pen

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@timelordiroh oh but I think the section swaps with the worldwide version if you already have the colorway you want.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@timelordiroh converters aren’t really standardized, only cartridges (partially). I wouldn’t let different converters scare you away from any pen. You put it in there and it pretty much stays in anyway.

For example, not every converter using the supposed international bore diameter will fit in the European MR. They specifically tell you to use Waterman.

My advice to you is just to get the normal version. It comes with a converter, or you can get the Moonman A1 converter and cartridge kit.
