Also anyone with experience with the Tramol JoWo #6 pen? Pro Gear clone with JoWo nib included. $60 seems steep but there aren’t a lot of options for JoWo #6 compatible pens on a budget, so could be a contender.

@jimp there’s also a clipless version of the A1, that’s the one I have. Or you could try a Décimo, the clip on the Capless and A1 doesn’t work for me, but the Décimo clip is OK. I guess because it’s thinner and more flush with the pen.

@gamerchick02 it sounds awesome. Have you tried it in store? One thing to watch out for is the clip placement. For whatever reason, my grip doesn’t work with the Capless clip, but it works fine with the Décimo clip.

@penfount ink capacity was a big one early on, but there’s a super easy solution which is to just bring a second pen as backup. It’s pretty hard to write through two pens in one day.

@inkycicada yes, I think so. I have that loupe and it works pretty decently for troubleshooting. It’s priced a bit higher than just buying the stuff would be but you’re paying for the convenience of getting everything together.

Hello, fountain pen peoples: any recommendations on how to clean out a moldy fountain pen? Perhaps I’m not searching well enough, but I haven’t found a definitive answer or instructions. I saw a few mentions about using a bleach solution to clean, but no measurements on bleach to water ratio. Supposedly this bleach solution could be used to clean fountain pen parts like the cap also, but I’m not sure if it’s really okay.

@jezlyn I’ve used vinegar with success. It’s just your normal household white vinegar in the dilution it comes with (i.e. don’t add water), soak the affected components in it, leave it for a day. It’s less likely to have adverse effects on your pen than bleach or hydrogen peroxide, so it’s a nice safe one to start with. Vinegar kills most molds but not all, so if it doesn’t work on yours you can try something else instead.

@jimp I have Sailor Seiboku (pigment) in mine and no issue. Before I had Birmingham Pen Co Summersweet in it for 2 whole years with no problem, always started right away, I used it maybe one every couple weeks.

This sounds maybe more like ink starvation? If you’re using the CON-40, I would switch to the CON-70. Or cartridges (from the box or refilled).

@jimp I really dislike the CON-40. Not only is it annoying to fill but it has weird problems too in my experience. I mostly use cartridges and refill them, for some pens I like to use the Pilot Mixable cartridges which have a little ball agitator in them.

@skinnylatte hi there! By “not messing around with refills” I think you’re referring to using cartridges rather than bottled ink?

I would take a look at the following:

  • Platinum Plaisir
  • Faber Castell Hexo
  • Pilot Lightive

First two are aluminum, the Lightive is plastic. The Metropolitan is IMO a somewhat outdated rec. It’s good if you want a metal pen, but the Lightive is lighter and has a better sealing cap.

If you need help narrowing further, let us know your preferred line width.

the cap does not have enough space and will absolutely bend your new nib to all hell and back.

@inkycicada more inclined to think it’s the feed. The Conklin feeds are a bit iffy. You could try scraping the ink channel a bit cleaner using a craft knife.

When you straightened it did you inspect the alignment using a loupe?

New (yester)Day! 2 brands that I've never tried before: KWZ & 3 Oysters, plus a couple of Sailors. I didn't realise KWZ Honey smelled so good! Not of honey, though. Kind of a sweet vanilla scent. Way better than the strong chemical smell of the Sailor inks 🤣 Is this common with KWZ inks, or is Honey a one-off?

I've tested the air travel capacity of one of my Montblanc 146 . The pen was filled with some ink and put inside my checked bag. It arrived at the destination without spilling a single drop of ink. The next flight was made with the pen in my backpack and the result was the same. If you want to fly with a , the MB 146 is a good option.

Well, now that we're all done with the news from NYC for the week... On to the more important things in life.

Currently have thirty-six inked. Another twenty dollars worth of Jinhaos (8 total) should be here by 10PM (C'mon, how else was I supposed to make the $25 min for same-day delivery on the $5 item I actually needed ASAP?????)

W/ those, I might be able to get all my current inks in pens, but... More ink also on way. Oops.

Saw this quick review by MarcyMe of this year’s SE Pelikan Edelstein ink, Golden Lapis, seems to be same gold shimmer as in the Golden Beryl but with a blue base color.
