In case you like fountain pen hacks, my friend JMC recently successfully installed a Pilot Parallel nib in the section of a Majohn/Moonman Wancai Mini eyedropper. It's a small pen but you're supposed to post the cap. The cap has enough space to close over the parallel nib.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@pixiecata I’ve heard this works on some other Moonman pens too like the C4 and M2 with various amounts of hackery needed?

What was the worst experience you ever had with pens, ink, writing, or stationery? How would you advise people to avoid having a similar experience?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@backtoanalog how odd! I used my Pilot MR with Lamy Azurite for a long time, I wonder what about your particular pen that made it so picky

abrokenjester, to random
@abrokenjester@mastodon.nz avatar

Question for #FountainPen experts: is it normal that my Pilot MR runs dry after writing 1-2 A5 pages of text? Using the converter that comes with it.

New to convertors (always used cartridges before) so perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@abrokenjester have you tried with cartridge to see if it still happens? It sounds like perhaps you’re not filling the converter up very well, the squeeze converters can be a bit tricky since you can’t see the ink level.

You could try the Moonman A1 or Wing Sung 659 converter as an alternative. Here’s a rundown on our blog: https://penfount.ink/alternatives-con-40/

So my no buy because of new floors is now because of new hoose! From the city, to the coast, to a wooded dell in the middle of nowhere in less than five years. As I’ve aged, my ability to tolerate others has diminished to the point of non-existence! That’s why our new neighbours are mostly deer, foxes and badgers ☺️

Got this fountain pen ink erasing pen a few weeks back. I have been so distracted and busy that I haven’t tried it yet. Will remedy that today 🥰

paradoxmo,

@Fury ink eradicator only works on inks which are specifically washable royal blue. So royal blues from most German pen companies qualify, as does Waterman Serenity Blue

Recently I started to travel a lot again and I don't really have motivation and time for drawing practice.

Today though I managed to get some:
This time I was experimenting with quick sketch. Instead of really looking at proportions between shapes I started with one shape and based whole drawing on circles with specific ratios.

That's why the nose it too big :bongoCat: It's easy to get lost when you loose reference and try to go faster with

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@quoidian @grayrattus @jimp @toga the more hygienic version of this is to dip it quickly in a cup of water

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@grayrattus Strongly suggest trying Platinum Preppy, Starlet, or Plaisir before you give up on fountain pens. They’re rated not to dry out for 2 years.

And yes, it’s likely possible to fix the pens that dried up, take a pic of them and tell us what ink you used (or used stock cartridge) and we can help.

What was your first fountain pen purchase? If you could go back, would you still choose the same pen(s) and/or ink(s)? If not, why, and what would you choose instead?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@timelordiroh maybe consider Wing Sung 698? Functionally it’s very similar to the Eco and it works very well with shimmer

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@penfount my first pen was Herlitz my.pen. I’ve since given it away. More on that pen here https://penfount.social/@paradoxmo/110741155116540781

I don’t think I would change my mind, as the reason I even got into fountain pens was because of this pen, which I found in a REWE supermarket. My subsequent purchases were Pilot MR, Pilot Kakuno, and TWSBI Eco, all since given away too.

For inks, my first picks were Lamy Azurite, Pelikan Edelstein Garnet, Herbin Poussière de lune. I still use all these inks and still like them.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@timelordiroh re: Pilot you could also get a vintage Elite pocket, it’s the same design as the E95S and there are a lot of them around for around 50-60

This sunny sunday morning was a perfect time to write a real letter to an old friend. Buetten stationary, my Jacques Herbin glass pen and a damn fine cup of coffee made it fun. I know my friend will smile when she finds the result in her postbox on the other side of the world.

@ahacker just got a letter from a friend. Writing and sending handwritten letters is definitely a highlight in our increasingly digital lives

The new looks stunningly beautiful on the page. In the bottle looks more like a watered down cherry color.

Bottle of Montblanc Manganese Orange ink on a desk with a computer keyboard in the background.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@neurologo so this is a new addition to the standard MB lineup?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@neurologo so looking on the web it seems both Manganese Orange and Amethyst Purple came out around 2019 (so relatively new for the standard ink line). I have Lavender Purple which I think I got in 2018, Amethyst Purple replaced that.

I used some clear UV cure resin to block the safety holes on a few Kakunos to hopefully stop them from drying out as quickly. It wasn't happening too fast but faster than expected. Too early to tell if the resin helped, especially since two are not inked at the moment (waiting on more CON-70s I ordered to arrive).

Have to look close to even see the difference visibly.

Now I just need to remember not to swallow them.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jimp hey, I’m very curious about how effective this is, could you report back when you’ve used them for a while?

Completed my illuminated manuscript of Psalm 93 in time for Mother's Day!

I used a modern variation of the Beneventan hand, which was most widely used in southern Italy in the middle ages. The historical script had lots of ligatures, but those are hard for modern readers, so I didn't use any here. This is also the hand where our modern question mark originated.

Side view detail of some of the illumination, with a cross filled with gold ink.

@codrusofathens nicely done!

@codrusofathens definitely a fountain pen! The No-Nonsense is pretty well liked by most people, simple but effective.

A friend is graduating, and I've asked one of our mutual friends if she wants to go in for a fountain pen for him. There are some fun/colorful ones at a local coffee shop that would suit his style.

Thought it may be that I am more excited about picking out a fountain pen than he would be receiving it.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@Furthering yeah, we have a good group! Fountain pens have never gone away, they’re very commonly used in Europe and Asia. But in the US and UK they “came back” during the stationery renaissance of the last decade (:

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@Furthering you can go two approaches, first there are inks that are so-called “drier” which won’t bleed as much on a bigger range of papers. R&K Salix or Pelikan 4001 Blue-black are ones to look into.

On the other side, if you want to find better paper, there are many good choices available in Europe. Clairefontaine—French paper is very good (Moroccan paper less so, but not bad), Midori MD, Fabriano.

If buying in larger quantities you could consider Clairefontaine DCP or Kokuyo KB paper.

of the day:
Do you have a “grail” pen(s)? What first drew you to it? What is preventing you from getting it?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@Suspect_Similar i don’t think grail pen is really a salesperson thing, as you can see from the responses here, what people name as their grail pen is quite varied and very personal.

I agree about “next-level”, this is meaningless and is geared toward people who just want to spend money.

“Starter” is a helpful category if only because for new pen users, a reliable, no fuss pen won’t discourage them from using FPs altogether.
