I wonder what's the most technically influential videogame of all time? I mean, a game that if you removed it from history then hundreds of other games over many different genres would suffer without the systems it introduced etc. You know, like an rpg that brought games a health 'number' rather than just 3 lives, or a game that pioneered the use of two joysticks etc.?

@patrickmcurry@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@psychicparrot42 @Praxismapper I did some for fun research on this, being mildly obsessed with first-person games. id Software made a bunch of proto-Doom games like Hovertank 3D, Catacomb 3-D, and Wolfenstein 3D. You can see the progression of the technology evolving alongside the mechanics.

@patrickmcurry@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Praxismapper @psychicparrot42 Yep! Long before id Software, “Wayout” had smooth rotation in a maze and came out for the Atari 8 bit computers in 1983. And “Battlezone” in arcades from 1980 is the oldest I could find with smooth rotation. Lots of iterations and experiments between all of these games!

@psychicparrot42 @Praxismapper Yeah smooth rotation in a first-person perspective maze in 1982 is pretty damn impressive. 🤯

Has anyone ported Doom’s monsters into Quake? There appear to be a few ports of Quake content into Doom engines, but I want to go the other way. I’m specifically interested in the 2D sprite characters in a fully 3D world.

Are there m/any modern 3D games that do looping levels, where leaving the edge of the map on one side continues into the other side — Pac-Man style? Feels like it would be more fun to do this in Battlefield than “return to the combat area”?

This + mod, “Legend of Doom” makes me so happy. It’s all of Zelda 1 very lovingly converted to play as a first-person game. It all works so well! https://www.moddb.com/mods/legend-of-doom

Anyone know of an app or driver or tool that can make my Windows PC display look/feel like a CRT television with 480i resolution, scanlines, etc?

I'd love a general solution that I can use for playing old games AND watching old shows. The blurriness used to be a feature.

The problem with being a game developer who loves mods is how hard it is to leave well-enough alone. “Yeah this mod is pretty cool, but how hard would it be for me to change just this one thing?” Absolutely devastating to my plan to do as little as possible this weekend.

No but seriously, why every paper has to use greek letters with multiple greek letter subscripts for everything

@aras @aeva Reminds me of this favorite passage from non-fiction: Rasmusen’s preface to Experiencing Architecture. It’s like a 1957 rap diss track.

Immediate mode GUI in Unity is both one of the most awesome and tragic features in the engine. It’s near perfect my needs, which are basically “print debug information to the screen”. I weep for the day that I have to do any more than that though.

This awesome video of Voxel Doom makes me want to dig deeper into Doom modding, but I gotta finish my Quake stuff first!

I spent a little time playing Voxel Doom and holy cow it’s magical. So many fan mods that try to improve on an original game get some fundamental part wrong, and I end up enjoying the game less. But these voxels design are so spot-on!

patrickmcurry,
@patrickmcurry@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

This is how classic Doom should look. The aesthetic is the same, it replaces warped billboard sprites with chunky voxels, and being able to mouse-look up and down no longer makes the game look bad. Serious kudos to the Voxel Doom gang!

Oh lord Voxel Doom 2 is out and I have real work to do. The decision must be made: do I choose to sacrifice sleep or eating to bask in the chunky voxel goodness?!

I can't stop thinking about how Superman, Spider-Man, and Super Mario have the same color schemes, strikingly similar names, and are all the front-man for their respective universes. This can't be an accident, right?!

I'm not sure what the mathematical term for this is -- but these guys' names have 70% or more of the same characters, and the characters are 60% or more in the same order.

You could squint and mistake any one of these names for either of the other TWO. Just look at these smashed-up hashtags:

@aeva Yeah it’s a trip how most of the golden age comics heroes are red / blue and the bad guys are green / purple. It’s like a visual moral syntax.
