Interestingly enough, there seem to be companies out there that avoid to get new customers with every possible way you can imagine. 🙄

thees, to NixOS
@thees@emacs.ch avatar

If you were to give an introduction to and to a crowd of developers mostly unfamiliar with its core concepts, what aspects of nix would you emphasise/highlight?

I'll be giving such an introduction next week to my colleagues and thought it'd be a good idea to check-in with the NixOS community on here (or at least see if my take on what aspects I'd hightlight align with what you folks think is important)

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@thees (I'm a beginner myself!)

One config for multiple hosts (even OS-independent!)

Abstract myself from the OS layer (I don't want to spend effort/time with it)

My hope: great support when settings, ... change during upgrade (not confirmed yet)

Ability to add some(!) tool-configuration in Nix instead of tool-specific config (counter-example: any non-trivial xfce setting which isn't available in Nix)

Faster rampup time when switching hardware.

I just can't use browsers without vertical tab bars anymore. How do people live with seeing only favicons?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kilian Keeping the number of tabs per window at a minimum level by using one window per task. 😉

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kilian I'm using named tabs https://github.com/tpamula/webextension-window-titler and tab mover https://code.guido-berhoerster.org/addons/firefox-addons/tab-mover/ which do the job for me. Currently: 20 windows, 300 tabs.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@kilian Most of the time, I choose the window of choice before I open the URL so the right window is used. If I end up in the wrong one, I use tab mover for the right target window.

Ist es ein Zeichen des Erwachenseins, dass man nicht mehr wegen der Menge, sondern nur noch wegen der Auswahl schätzt? 🤔

Pro tip for you!

If you're asking for help, share your whole system configuration! NixOS is reproducible from that configuration file which makes it way easier for other people to reproduce your problem and help find a solution. No more guess work like other distros!

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@jakehamilton How about included secrets?

Those won't be part of the repo and you have to find them all in order to disable/fake them.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@chfkch @jakehamilton So far, I never did use something for secrets and therefore, I did not publish anything with secrets.

And yes, starting to look for a solution for that issue is also on my list.

However, with low prio because I suspect a steep learning curve and therefore no public Nix config from me at the moment.

publicvoit,

@chfkch I couldn't find something related to "agenux". Do you have an URL for me?

I've seen the hype and warned the users of long-term lock-in effects. Then OneNote failed and people lost (parts of) their data.

I've seen the hype and it happened again.

Now, I see the hype. (At least the file format is an open one.)

🤷

https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/

If you want to spare yourself some effort, think of starting with a solution with no lock-in: https://karl-voit.at/orgmode/

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@ctietze 100% agree!

I did not prase it as good as you but meant the same thing.

Obsidian: for people who are not able to learn Emacs Org-mode for reasons. 👍 (we may differ on the set of valid reasons or their priority)

If you are in a position of being able to learn such a system (which is easer than most people suggest), Emacs has its advantages over Obsidian.

And: There can't be any bancruptcy of Emacs. Therefore, there is zero lock-in effect except in your brain, of course. 😉

Given all that is going on with laying off its US and Chile staff and moving all work to Europe (see https://www.techmeme.com/230709/p7#a230709p7 ), I'm SO glad that I moved my notes over to back in March!

If it helps anyone, here are my notes about what I did to migrate from Evernote to Obsidian: https://www.danyork.com/2023/03/after-almost-15-years-saying-goodbye-to-evernote-and-moving-to-obsidian.html

publicvoit,

@ChristianKrebel That's the syntax. But without functionality, you don't have more UX than within Notepad.exe 😉

(btw, this common misconception is the reason I introduced as a name for the syntax of .)

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@dsmasterson @danyork

Capturing: there are many solutions out there: org-protocol seems to be most standard but I prefer "Copy as Org-mode" (FF add-on).

Sync: whatever file sync you choose. I'm using Syncthing.

Capturing images: I've read about a desktop method but don't ask me anything related to Apple which I won't use.

I'm not so sure about MEGA and security. 🤔 I'd use other methods, depending on your actual requirements.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@danyork That's OK.

However, I just wanted to emphasize that the syntax/file format is only one thing. The "what to do with it" is the more important part which Obsidian or orgmode are providing.

If you quit Emacs 35 years ago, you've missed the best years so far. It's a completely different situation and orgmode wasn't around back then. You'd be surprised how it all turned out. And there are many possibilities for vim-bindings such as Spacemacs, Doom Emacs, ...

I'm using vim and Emacs daily.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@x1101 @danyork The difference is as big as between the original vi and current MS Word, IMHO. (if you don't like Org-mode references)

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@Colman @x1101 @danyork This aversion against Emacs seems to be the part that many people associate "religion" with. 😉

People, Emacs is so much more than vim can ever be and it's really a comfty switch using ready-to-use Emacs distros like Spacemacs or Doom (as I've read many times). In short: Emacs can everything what vim provides and (if wanted) millions of things in addtion to that.

I myself am using vim with vim bindings daily and Emacs with Emacs bindings daily. Since decades.

YMMV.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@Colman @x1101 @danyork

Reinventing a mediocre wheel just to avoid the perfect solution for that class of problems (Emacs + org-mode) doesn't seem to be a really thoughtful decision to me. YMMV.

Drop me a line when you want a short demo by me and you'll see why you should not invest effort in workarounds.

All in all, all decent tools tend to emerge into Org-mode anyway.

@publicvoit@graz.social avatar
