I've become that old man that peeks out the curtain when the doorbell rings, then walks away when I see it's someone in a hoodie.

So here's something I don't understand about medical insurance:

My insurer has outsourced approving claims to a third-party. Isn't approving claims like, a core function of an insurance company?

This is a pretty good sign of a company that has fallen into late-stage capitalism, where they've decided their true function is to make money for the shareholders.

I miss the days when big companies took pride in their work and not just their profits.

Yeah... you have one job, payment processor. Just. One. Job.

Donald Trump at his New Jersey speech:

“The late, great Hannibal Lecter is a wonderful man,” Trump continued. “He oftentimes would have a friend for dinner. Remember the last scene? ‘Excuse me, I’m about to have a friend for dinner’ as this poor doctor walked by. ‘I’m about to have a friend for dinner.’ But Hannibal Lecter, congratulations. The late, great Hannibal Lecter.”

At least with crypto you had to opt in. Nobody was shoving crypto into everything I use.

something in my thought cabinet that I don't have any conclusions on yet: most forms of development planning I've worked with in my career have amounted to some form of acknowledging that you can't accurately estimate complex tasks, but then go and pretend you can accurately estimate small tasks, and precede to make up a set of small tasks, make up estimates for them, click them together like lego bricks, and viola there's your ship date or stack ranking KPIs or whatever

raven,
@raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

@aeva At Boeing, we literally tripled our estimates. And then, if we came in under our estimate, we drug our feet to hit the estimate, otherwise management would say, "But you completed earlier than you estimated last time, so shave a couple weeks off this estimate."

I forget what, but something reminded me of how in elementary school they put me in a speech therapy class where they essentially just taught me to talk slower. I never really thought much about that, but while I was thinking about it now I was reminded of how over the years I've had so many friends where we would just have long deep non-linear mile-a-minute conversations about stuff we're excited about and, well, most of them also have been diagnosed with ADHD at some point lol

raven,
@raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

@aeva I had a similar experience... the diagnosed so young I forgot. And parents didn't talk about it, because ADHD was speed to be a childhood issue you grow out of. And like you, I got diagnosed as an adult and when I told my mom, she told me of my past.

College would have been so different if I'd known.

I know this is both controversial and brave of me to say, but I really hate the "two-column paper" format. {lastname}%y.pdf why are you like this.

raven,
@raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

@aeva I think the two column format is fine on paper. It's annoying AF in digital. (Says the guy who's been reading roleplaying PDFs formatted for print.)

I enjoyed The Last of Us Part I.

I tried getting into Part II (even knowing spoilers about Joel) and I just couldn’t.
I’m trying again with the PS5 update but gosh, I just… am having such a hard time. I’m finding it hard to… latch on.
I like Abby and Dina.
Ellie… I liked in the first game but I’m finding it hard to like her here.

In the spirit of embracing new experiences though, I am going to keep at it.

The game itself is super impressive, voice acting and visuals are phenomenal.

raven,
@raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

@tashen I haven't played II, and this is what I fear... that I loved Ellie in the first game, and I afraid they broke her in the second.

In part, I've been waiting to replay I before I play II, and I have way too many games to play.

Weekend was one of thinking, "How am I going to use this Harbor Freight '30% off, no exceptions' coupon?" and then realizing Monday, just before I'm planning to head over there, that it's limited to items under $20.

The "over $50" coupon was only 10% off, which isn't terrible, but HF does better. I can wait for a better coupon for a new tool chest.

I feel like Rush weren't on my radar in my youth (and never have been), despite charting on the Billboard Hot 100 5 times while I was in middle and high school. I mean, I recognized the name, but I don't remember hearing their music.I didn't have a pop radio station growing up and relied on MTV.

I'm sure I'd recognize a couple songs if I heard them, but the titles aren't ringing a bell. I'll have to queue some up while I'm doing chores this afternoon.

    @Binder I remember when Voyager was announced, it was supposed to be "dark". Turned out that meant some of the crew disagreed and a replicator was broken.

    One of the problems with being a company with lots of full-remote and offices around the world is that "lunchtime" is no longer a sacred hour on the calendar. I block mine off as unavailable, but it doesn't stop people from scheduling meetings during that time.

    Hallmark After Dark channel would absolutely thrive. Just cut porn in to the existing romantic movies.

    It doesn’t need to make narrative sense. The cast need not resemble the other. But you’ve got to remember your Eco & use the non-porn to build thirst.

    raven,
    @raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

    @Binder Wasn't that basically how porn started? Wanting to make normal movies with a plot that wasn't just about sex, but with explicit sex in them?

    Pretty wild to me that the mobile platform that has majority market share in the US, doesn’t allow users to install apps from outside of their own tightly-controlled store, requires all purchases to be served through that store with a platform fee, doesn’t allow users to sideload their own apps, doesn’t allow entire categories of apps like browser engines and game streaming, and doesn’t even allow users to set their own preferred apps in many cases is not a monopoly… but Android somehow is??

    raven,
    @raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

    @cassidy um... my sources say Android holds 70% market share, iOS 28%.

    Everyone acts like Apple is king in the market and Android users are some weird hold-out group, but Apple is actually the minority.

    raven,
    @raven@fedi.raventhemaker.com avatar

    @cassidy I'm talking US. (I live in New Jersey.) Where are you getting your numbers? Hardware side, Apple leads with 29% market share. OS side, I see many sources that all say iOS owns less than one third of the market, leaving Android with about 70%.
