Wife: "Is that something Casio made?"

Me: "Nah"

Wife: "Then who made it?"

Me: "Some watch enthusiasts. It lets me test my custom watch face code."

Wife: "oh, watch enthusiasts..." slowly backs out of the room

Swapped the board in my
A158WE with the Sensor Watch Lite, for all that custom watch face goodness.

This is the second watch I've done this mod to (the first was with the OG Sensor Watch board on an F-91W), and both operations were straight forward and successful.

Thanks again @joeycastillo for such an great project!

The A158WE watch has been disassembled. The old and new board are side by side face up.
A view of the back side of the old and new board. The contactors for the battery and piezo buzzer have been removed from the old board and installed on the new.

The Human Rangefinder!

A clever solution to aid in estimating distances to things.
If you know the length of your arm, the distance between your pupils, and you then measure the perceived parallax between each eye when lining up an object held at arms length, you can determine the distance to that thing.

Thomas Achtemichuk put up a generator to print out a card to make this simple.
https://tomchuk.com/rf/

This has been helpful getting familiar with an camera that has no rangefinder.

A worn human rangefinder card in a small leather wallet. The distance measurements in meters are visible along the top of the card and wallet.

The Agfa Isolette II is a medium format folding camera from 1950's Germany. I picked one up for pretty cheap, but it has some common problems. This weekend I began to address them.

After disassembly and giving everything a clean, I managed to clear up the viewfinder and swap the bellows with a lovely green one made by @sandehalynch

Next will be to free the focus, re-grease, clean the lens, reassemble, and collimate.

A gloved hand holding a small square piece of glass in front of a partially disassembled camera. The small lens used in the viewfinder cleaned up nicely.
Old bellows removed and on the table in front of a nearly completely disassembled camera.
The brass lens mount has been fitted to the new green bellows.

Finally got around to cleaning out the fire pit. Lined up with a pleasant autumn night to kick things off.

Planet money's interview of FTC Chair Lina Khan is something right out @pluralistic

They don't dig too deep, but touch on a few big cases and hit the high points of a modern take on anti trust enforcement. Well worth a listen.

We're going to get close to freezing tonight so harvesting the final few stragglers from the Summer stuff.

@Wyatt Thanks!

After they bloom I let them hang on for a while to let the calyces swell, then I just nip them off with pruners.

They are super productive once they get going, so sometimes I'll just snip a whole limb and pull them off away from the plant.

Spent the evening assembling a replacement for my small home server/NAS.
It went together pretty easily and the form factor is nice and small.

I went with:

  • Odroid H3+
  • 32GB DDR4
  • 256GB NVMe SSD
  • 2 4TB WD Blue SSDs
  • type 3 case

Photo of the Odroid H3 and 2 WD Blue 4TB drives installed in the type 3 case without the sides attached.
Front of the type 3 case with installed power button.
Back of type 3 case with Odroid H3 I/O exposed.

@danarel I'm excited for what's to come for MLS. It feels that we're at an inflection point.

I've come to think the real value of a garden isn't the fresh food or even the enjoyment of nature - it's to have a place in your life where at any time you can go do something for 30 minutes that makes a thing in your life better.

We gave Kajari melons a try in the garden this year, and they've done great!
Low maintenance even in some extreme heat. They are very aromatic, and the flavor is sweet and refreshing.

Given the recent Google Domains demise: what are the cool kids using these days for their domain registrar?

@webchick probably not popular, but I started with namecheap years ago and just kinda stuck with them out of laziness.

I recently purchased a old Calumet 4x5 monorail view camera from a surplus auction, and already having a blast learning the ins and outs.
