Anyone still think those one-time licenses are here to stay after the acquisition? (See https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/press/newsroom/canva-press-release/) Any guesses how long before Affinity users are training Canva's mass-market product to replace them? I just need to share how refreshing is to develop on after years of using as a for @freehive clients. I thought I'd find reasons to still use WP. After three sites on ProcessWire? Nope. Give it a look: https://processwire.com/ (It's !)

I need some advice.

I'm increasingly unhappy with WordPress. It's the wrong tool for most client jobs.

I really like @getkirby. It's flexible, fast, easy. It's mature but fresh. The source is open but... it's not .

I trust these developers to behave ethically. It checks more feature boxes than any other CMS, by far. But, it lacks the insurance of that license.

WP is open, but feels proprietary. Kirby is proprietary, but feels open.

What would you do?

ryangorley,
@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

I have looked into @astro which is an exciting static site generator, but it would need to be paired with a headless CMS and those are almost universally proprietary (and expensive). It's hard to hand that kind of mixed setup off to a client too.

Grav would be the closest FOSS alternative to Kirby, but it's not as polished and development has slowed down a lot. I don't think I would be handing off a 5 year solution.

There are others. But yeah, I've spent a lot of time looking.

@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@postroutine @wagtail

Thanks for bringing it up. I did look into Wagtail, but only when I was trying to find headless CMS to pair with Astro. I need to look at it again.

Having lived in PHP land so long, the Django universe feels very foreign to me. I'd have to get some help from @doctormo to figure it all out!

ryangorley,
@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@pohokolius Yeah, that's how I like to work. Thanks for the link. There are some really neat SSG's out there. The problem is the headless CMS layer I would need to add for clients to keep up a blog or whatever. The setup is complex, and the most user-friendly options are proprietary. 🤦

ryangorley,
@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@lukasbestle @getkirby Thanks for responding, Lukas. What you're saying aligns with what I've observed and I believe it.

It's not my place to tell anyone what they should give away. So this is only a suggestion. What if you freely licensed the versions of Kirby that have reached EOL? The newest & best Kirby could remain as is, but people would have insurance against the "bus factor" or an unsavory buy-out. Community could patch old versions for those who can't upgrade.

It's just a thought.

@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@viktor @classicpress No, I haven't seen this... Wow. I'll definitely be looking deeper. Thanks!

@thomasaull How did I miss this?! It looks very promising, maybe exactly what I need. Thank you!

ryangorley,
@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@jimmac For my own stuff, this totally works. For clients, they generally feel like they have to have some kind of CMS to make changes (even though 80% will never log in and use it).

I just can't imagine a world where people say, "Follow me on X", "I go to X for my news", or "The President X'd today." Of all the impulsive decisions, I think this will have the greatest negative consequences for Musk. Twitter will die, not for all the reasons it should, but because talking about it is so embarrassing.

Note: If this comment doesn't age well, X me on X about it in the future. 😉

Is it safe to express my appreciation to and other corporations that fund development? Yeah, they sometimes do things to protect their interests we don't understand or agree with. Maybe if enslaved baby seals to write code it would be a step too far. But for the most part the world benefits when corporations contribute to , the same as when universities and individuals do. That's what makes awesome.

When anyone spends their resources making something and then gives it away for free they should be greeted firstly with gratitude. They should be greeted secondly with gratitude. They should be greeted lastly with gratitude.

Too much community rage and contributor burnout stems from a strange forgetfulness that no one has to contribute anything this way. It's always a wonder. Let's chill out and be a little more kind and a lot more grateful.

@bascule Yep, see it all the time. I'm not a developer, but I imagine this would be very demotivating.

ryangorley,

@dukepaaron Guess not. How does it apply exactly?

ryangorley,
@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@dukepaaron Aaaah! 👍

ryangorley,
@ryangorley@mastodon.social avatar

@mray Yeah, I can see how that would be frustrating. Similarly people can spend a lot of time writing code only to have it rejected by a project maintainer. Sometimes that's not handled graciously either.

@halla Wow. With how many people use Krita, I can only imagine. For what it is worth, I love Krita. Thanks for giving me that gift. I get to use it on a limited basis for my work, but when I do it is always a delight. It brings me the joy I had when I could just draw for fun as a kid. Thank you!
