@itsfoss Nothing new is going on here. Remember the days of the xp-AntiSpy tool? Although XP had no AI, it still collected a significant amount of data that was not relevant to the OS functionality. If Windows comes bundled with almost every machine available in major brick-and-mortar or online stores, and if Microsoft integrates AI into it, people will just keep using it.
Needs 16 gigs of RAM just for the OS? That's fine, RAM is cheap and you can download RAM boosters or cleaners...

@itsfoss don't do it if you're happy with your current OS (non Linux). Do it if you're unhappy with it, or do it while thinking of the issues you've had with it. Maybe start slow, dual boot at first. But it's 2024 now, not 2004, so you'll be fine even with Wine

@thejapantimes two words - 記者クラブ. If you're not a member, good luck. If you're a member, you'll produce news given by them. If you criticise - well, you won't be a member for too long.
If you're a big player, like Yomiyuri or Asahi Shinbun, you're not the democracy watchdog. You're just repeating or re-wording the 自民党 stuff, or, if you're "independent", you're just making sure to never criticise 自民党. At all. The rest is just paid adverts and reports of crimes committed by XYZの国籍の方

@itsfoss You do realise that this is not a Mastodon problem per se, but rather an @itsfoss problem? The problem is the handling on the server side. The fact that Mastodon does a preview and queries the server is one thing, but the answer is the server's business.
Today it's Mastodon and if @itsfoss can't handle the query/response then the ball is in your court. Balancing and such.
Surely you are not saying that it only takes like maybe ten users (at a time) to share a link and you're DDOSed??

Russia has no designs on NATO countries and won't attack Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday, while adding that if the West supplies F-16 fighters to Ukraine they will be shot down by Russian forces. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/03/28/world/politics/putin-nato-f16-ukraine/

sarcastictoast,

@thejapantimes Well, that's reassuring, coming from the same Putin who promised not to attack Ukraine right before launching his 'three-day operation'—which, funnily enough, has been dragging on into its second year. I guess in the same way, NATO countries can now sleep peacefully knowing they won't be attacked. After all, when has Putin's word ever led us astray, except for, you know, every time he opens his mouth?

Russian President Vladimir Putin will run for re-election in March that could keep him in power until 2030 and make him Russia’s longest-serving leader since Catherine the Great in the late 18th century. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/12/09/world/politics/putin-seeks-reelection/?utm_content=bufferc7ca6&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to replace Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno amid media reports he had received unreported political funds, the Yomiuri newspaper reported Saturday, citing several government and ruling party sources. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/12/09/japan/kishida-plans-matsuno-replace/?utm_content=buffer232bd&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #japan #hirokazumatsuno #fumiokishida #ldp #politicalfunds

@thejapantimes Although I don't have any high opinion of Kishida (rather the opposite) and I don't think he's any good PM, she wouldn't be any better if she somehow miraculously became PM. Although most of her colleagues, including her, are in 日本会議, her views, despite what positions she has held in the past, are unacceptable not only nowadays but also in the past. She as PM would not only mean the stagnation of Japan, as has been the case for two decades, but perhaps even a step backwards, IMHO

@thejapantimes is a prime example of how a promising politician, even from the LDP, can gradually become a . For two years, the government here has been reeling from one problem to another and a complete absence of any response and, more importantly, any solution. As in the past, it's a pretty safe bet that the next PM here will be an extreme, noisy, and as confrontational as possible right-winger.

Television broadcasters across Japan have issued rare statements regarding their lack of reporting on the alleged sexual abuse of minors by entertainment mogul Johnny Kitagawa. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/08/30/japan/society/johnny-media-silence/?utm_content=bufferf6a06&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn

sarcastictoast,
@sarcastictoast@mastodon.social avatar

@thejapantimes The statements issued by the TV stations, incl. Nippon TV have been superficial and vague to say the least. Although indirectly, the whole thing came out sounding like "we're sorry that YOU didn't find OUR reporting okay" or "we're sorry that you found out about it and that it got exposed".

The ratio of workers using the telework system in Japan dropped to 22.2%, the lowest level since the coronavirus outbreak hit the country, a new survey has shown. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/08/19/japan/society/japan-telework-survey/?utm_content=buffer00f15&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn

Japan's workplace dynamics, a true masterpiece of logic! Remember, in this wondrous land, your value is directly proportional to the time your chair is warming the office seat. The magical aura of being seen equals productivity, while the mystique of telework remains a tale for the ages. Clearly, modern flexibility pales in comparison to the grandeur of old-school norms.

@thejapantimes "aiming for full implementation" is the word here. There's no way this could pass here. Virtually anything related to education here does not get adequate funding. On the other hand, if it involves some money in one's own pocket or various programs through "shadow companies" connected to the wife of a politician, the money drains away almost at the speed of light.
