What a ride
Hackers threatening them with a massive ransom after stealing data while trying to maintain the high ground, and succeeding.

    @dansup @Gargron Our side need to prepare to handle them whatever they do.

    For example, having 10,000 S3 buckets on 10,000 instances isn't going to cut if when the FB networks have thousands of TB of media on their side... and we absolutely need to build regional Jortage style AP enabled deduplicated CDN hubs to share the load.

    @shlee@aus.social avatar

    @annika This is VERY much a question of the classic CIA triagle (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) with added problems of the fediverse.

    As the fediverse grows larger, and older... Every account is adding more and more content. Every piece of media grows as the social graph increases.

    It's a waste of time, cycles and money to not de-duplicate (fetching and refetching images from your cache is a waste), and environmentally bad from all of the wasted compute as well... I have a lot of feelings.. in short, yes.

    @whatshisays She's not wrong... I work in information security, and all of the best hackers I know are all 21

    The kids are very online... I was online when I was 12, they were online at 2.

    I'll let that pass.

    @kainoa Is there a guide for calckey CDN? even for the static files

    shlee,
    @shlee@aus.social avatar

    @admin I've done that for the objects. I'm talking Mastdon CDN_HOST style.

    Serving all of the css/js/local static stuff from a CDN.

    shlee,
    @shlee@aus.social avatar

    @admin This has a massive decrease on my servers general load because it's only handling the dynamic traffic.

    Reddit is experiencing the VC dilemma.... Your startup is allowed to have core features and limited growth, and the end user experience is generally better that way in the long term...

    VCs require infinite growth and that's unsustainable, so once the users run out.. they look to find cash any way they can like the privatisation of the APIs.

    Patreon had the same problem. It had one job, then it suddenly started posting about microloans.

    VC money, not even once.

    Walking my dog today and some drunk comes up and asks for a Pat… so I pick up the dog

    The drunk starts showing my dog a card trick, and when the dog obviously looks away, immediately calls the dog “a rat faced prick”

    He's not wrong... I love that little rat faced prick of a dog. <3

    Spent a few hours in unpackinggame.com, and once the plot reached a point of home ownership. It made me sad the Australian dream is almost an impossibility for current/future generations.

    A virtual home wasn't the escapism I was looking for. Will I ever unpack my life into a home I own? or are we going to continue to move from rental to rental of different sizes and styles?

    Doubt that was the devs aim. Unpack that.
