I'm thinking of adding list of instances that have #MastodonBirdUI enabled via Custom CSS or an option. The list will be available in the repo README.

So, if your instance uses my UI theme for Mastodon, please let me know by replying here:

  • What is your instance or the instance you have user on (URL)?
  • Does your instance have the theme set up via Custom CSS or as Site theme option? (Either "Elephant" or "Mastodon Bird UI" is fine)
  • If you use a Site theme implementation method, is it named "Elephant" or "Mastodon Bird UI"?
  • Is Bird UI default theme or as option for users to choose from?

I was looking for a reply in a post earlier this year but then found it's gone. This is kinda a downside, I wish old replies could be re-fetched, never thought it's "impossible to undo".

It could work in a way it would backfill the replies once the post is accessed, but tech-wise I understand if it's not possible.

Question for admins: Are you doing something to circumvent this?

People talk hard about blocking Threads because of numerous privacy issues / surveillance capitalism reasons.

but, I'm likely blocking them for much more boring reasons.... They have hundreds of TBs of storage, unlimited bandwidth and a marketing budget (5 million people signed by in the first few hours).

has the ability to simple price administrators out of the market - using the classic method of just outspending your enemy with a dumptruck of money - Simply by existing in the same ecosystem as us, they can and will increase our server/storage costs until admins like myself drop out. (THANK YOU PATRONS/SUPPORTERS)

If I wanted to open communicate with -- I fear I simply won't be able to play the same game as them for very long.... and I foresee plenty of other admins dropping out for that reason

    @dansup @Gargron Our side need to prepare to handle them whatever they do.

    For example, having 10,000 S3 buckets on 10,000 instances isn't going to cut if when the FB networks have thousands of TB of media on their side... and we absolutely need to build regional Jortage style AP enabled deduplicated CDN hubs to share the load.

    @annika This is VERY much a question of the classic CIA triagle (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) with added problems of the fediverse.

    As the fediverse grows larger, and older... Every account is adding more and more content. Every piece of media grows as the social graph increases.

    It's a waste of time, cycles and money to not de-duplicate (fetching and refetching images from your cache is a waste), and environmentally bad from all of the wasted compute as well... I have a lot of feelings.. in short, yes.
