The other night somebody asked me to take a photo of their group. I asked them "Do you want me to take it normal style or Millennial style?" and they said "Normal, please". I was happy to hear that and turned the phone landscape to take the photo. They interrupted me and said "Oh no, we mean normal, like up and down".

I'm still not over this. The world is crumbling.

I just read the installation notes for some software I was interested in and running it requires you to have two copies of it running in two separate Docker containers. There are no instructions for just running it directly.

We have lost the plot, folks.

I think it's time to stop searching for some sort of social media beyond the Fediverse. For those praising BlueSky as something so much better than Twitter: "BlueSky Terms of Service gives Jack a 'perpetual' & 'irrevocable' license to all your content (posts, name, likeness, pics); BlueSky can delete your account for any reason, but may refuse to delete it if you ask." https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1651686218319425570.html

So, someone posted a toot indicating one should avoid 2FA on Google's authenticator app at all costs, because it appears to transfer sensitive data in the clear.

Well, I discovered today that if you bypass the initial screen asking you to configure 2FA, all of your Authenticator accounts are irretrievably lost.

Kaput. Gone.

I fucking hate this world so much. I want to throw literal bricks right now. I'm so fucking done with this shit.

UML gets a lot of flak. Most of it is well deserved; not so much for the notation itself, but the ecosystem and snake-oil salesmen that grew up around it. Leads to a lot of stuff like https://hackers.town/@nasser@merveilles.town/110265628081926143 .

But, when used well, UML diagrams are incredibly useful and, dare I say it, even helpful to communicate an understanding of how something works.

I have three pieces of advice for UML:

  1. Think twice before using an UML diagram. Is there an easier way to express your intention? Are you going to use the right diagram for your exposition?
  2. If there's no better way, ignore the processes and focus on the diagrams.
  3. If you need code generation from a UML diagram, your system is too complex. You've either modularized it too much, or it isn't modular enough. Either your types are too granular (leading to a combinatorial explosion of them), or are too god-like. Gerrymander your module interfaces so as to simplify the overall architecture.

Rule (1) should apply to literally everything you do in life, not just to UML. But, it seems like it always needs to be spelled out.

Rule (2) is where things get interesting though. Forget using UML for automated software generation. See rule (3). Use it for human-to-human communication only.

Anyway, that's my unpopular opinion of the day.

lordbowlich,

@vertigo strongly concur with 3. Diagrams are great for getting a big picture idea of a system. Created with the right level of granularity for the illustration you are trying to achieve.

My only complaint I’ve ever really had was relationships in class diagrams. The syntax wasn’t visually intuitive. I shouldn’t need to go consult a wiki every time to figure out what an diamond shape at the end of a line means.

Google has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices.

TL;DR: Don't turn it on.

The new update allows users to sign in with their Google Account and sync 2FA secrets across their iOS and Android devices.

We analyzed the network traffic when the app syncs the secrets, and it turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted. As shown in the screenshots, this means that Google can see the secrets, likely even while they’re stored on their servers. There is no option to add a passphrase to protect the secrets, to make them accessible only by the user.

Why is this bad?

Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that’s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there’s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access .... 🧵
