We released a zero-copy IPC system and framework for writing servers. Blog at https://www.akamai.com/blog/developers/flow-ipc-introduction-low-latency-cpp-toolkit developer-oriented blog (a worked example) at https://www.linode.com/blog/open-source/flow-ipc-introduction-low-latency-cpp-toolkit/ and GitHub repo at https://github.com/flow-ipc

Please forward for reach. Hope folks find it useful. This is a reference implementation in C++.

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@rsalz interesting, thank you!

Why is it that the blog uses terminology around "transmission", "send", "receive" etc? This is using shared memory, right? So is the terminology used to match certain mental models of the target audience? Or do I misunderstand?

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@rsalz that makes sense, but "we showed that Flow-IPC can transmit data structure payloads as large as 1GB just as quickly as a 100K payload" irritates me if in fact there is no transmission happening…

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@ygoldfeld @rsalz Welcome to the fediverse and thank you for the quick and detailed reply. So I can follow now how the terminology matches what I called the "mental model" and also it makes sense in terms of the concept of messages. I also agree that, while shared memory is a simple concept, the synchronization involved is hard, and so is creating a simple API.
My irritation probably stems from the fact that I usually work with less abstractions. Thank you again.

I enabled Brotli compression on the CDN which serves the main BBC websites (www.bbc.co.uk. www.bbc.com etc.) outside the UK this morning.
Over ~4 hours, we're seeing a mean of ~20% better compression (smaller responses) via Brotli & ~95% of responses being Brotli now.
I've not had time to look in detail at performance but there doesn't look to be a significant change (LMK if you see diferent!).
(the spikes are breaking news events linking to a large "live" pages)

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@tdp_org nice!

i would also be interested in cpu metrics. also: which implementations are you using and which parameters to the compressor?

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@tdp_org @kura zstd also looks promising

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@kura @tdp_org this will need some coordination between your cdn and origin. a generic cdn will probably assume that your origin supports c-e: gzip only and create other encodings transparently. i have once implemented this in vcl for brotli, but it's not exactly trivial. https://gitlab.com/uplex/varnish/libvfp-brotli/-/blob/master/src/tests/realworld.vtc?ref_type=heads

ideally though, the cdn would also ask the origin for "br, gzip" and only do the recompression if the backend sent gzip.

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@tdp_org removing a-e: is a weird kink of fastly, but yeah, their fork point is ancient. with current filters, we can easily do "gunzip br".
thank you for the interesting update!

Ok, I know Norwegian, I know English, I know a bit of German and now I started my first steps to learning a bit of French...

So far I have yet to understand why people consider French a particularly beautiful language. I mean, not trying to insult French or anything, but not finding it anything special as far as beauty goes? (Unless mumbling counts as beauty)

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@edgren @kly defining the beauty of french by contrast to german makes a lot of sense! 😄 eh voilà!

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@kly @edgren i also studied some linguistics for my msc and if i remember correctly after all the time, indian english is not categorized as a dialect. it counts as a language in its own right.
so you did translate.

I always wondered that so many people trust me with their servers, installing packages from a random person on the Internet. But in the end, the trust is the only thing we have in the open source - on so many levels.

So, if you are state actor thinking about hacking my package please attach a big fat cheque covering rest of my life, because there will be nothing left after I lose the trust. You can contact me for quote ;)))).

There are a large number of abandoned open-source projects across a broad spectrum of development.

I suppose a common reason for not declaring a project dead is that the maintainer thinks at some point they may return and that marking a project dead is a sign of a failure.

It's not a sign of failure!

You were likely volunteering your time and ... none of our business. Please, mark it archived/stopped/dead if you have a moment. Thanks!

@OS_Economy damn, i thought i had found a great project to support. and then i heard blockchain. 😢

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@OS_Economy so what can you do with blockchain that you can't do with a decentralized trust based model?
how would your per project blockchains even find enough traction to get truly decentralized?

slink,
@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@OS_Economy don't get me wrong, i was also fascinated some 15 years ago when i initially learned about the great idea to combine public key cryptography, hash chains and hash collisions into a distributed ledger. but a great idea does not make it the right tool for a given purpose.
also don't get me wrong about about your efforts to make opensource a sustainable business model based on cooperation. these are great! i'd love to see a codeforge with integrated funding…
