Posit: The Prime Directive is not there to protect indigenous civilizations from advancing too quickly without requisite knowledge, the Prime Directive is there to protect the Federation from a civilization that may quickly advance beyond and therefore challenge the Federation. Discuss.

Why are CFP submissions so bad? There is a ton of info out there on what makes a good CFP, but instead I get two paragraphs of drivel. No proper abstract, minimal bio and what's an outline? And then people complain when they don't get accepted. <sigh>

Pro tip: Before returning your rental car, make sure you delete your phone contacts and travel history from the onboard infotainment systems. The rental agency isn’t going to do it for you.

Something else I’ve noticed at this year is a lack of red. A lot of orange, pink and purple and blue, but not a lot of red, much less than previous years. (do not underestimate color impact when it comes to marketing and sales.)

Very nice of them to label it for me. (Even if it is crooked.)

If I say Public US .gov sponsored offense/defense ops what comes to mind?

I already have
Operation SunDevil
Operation Eligible Receiver
Solar Sunrise

I know I am missing some. Are there some .gov botnet takedowns I'm missing?

If you have not yet read the

Cyber Safety Review Board Releases Report on Microsoft Online Exchange Incident from Summer 2023

Highly recommend you do so, or at least read the executive summary its 🔥

"The Board finds that this intrusion was preventable and should never have occurred. The Board also concludes that Microsoft’s security culture was inadequate and requires an overhaul..."

It’s definitely not ‘family’, ‘community’ almost fits, but I am heartened by the way so many people around the world have given up their holiday weekend to not just work the problem, but to dig several layers deep, and share information openly. Tomorrow is Monday and the corporate blogs and the news sites and the pundits will all have their own hot takes. But it is good to know that the underlying core is not yet rotten.

Congratulations to @chompie1337 who scored a win in the Windows 11 LPE category! Her exploit circumvents the latest Virtualization Based Security mitigations. She becomes the first solo female competitor to score a full win at , the world’s most prestigious hacking competition.

(Only links I have are to Xitter and I won’t post those)

Author of “True Names”, arguably the first cyberspace story, Vernor Vinge, has passed.

“True Names” is on my short list of must read hacker fiction. If you haven’t read it you should.

Who is everybody using for NS services these days? I got grandfathered into ZoneEdit’s free tier almost two decades ago, and have not had a need to change it since. But now I need an automated LE cert via ACME.sh and ZoneEdit is not supported. I have heard horror stories about CloudFare what else is out there?

Referring to Bird Site as ‘X’ by itself is ambiguous and confusing. ‘X (formerly Twitter)’ is too much of a mouthful, and ‘Twitter’ has been deprecated and no longer accurate, I propose (ok stole off Mostodon) it henceforth be referred to as Xitter (pronounced just how you think it should be pronounced.

Can anyone explain the business justification for this obscene global push to RTO? Remote employees are proven to be more productive, less expensive, and happier in their jobs when remote. It can not just be that execs want company in the office, or some weird thing about real estate value. It might be a way to get rid of too many employees after over-hiring during the pandemic but even that seems like a stretch. I just don't understand the strong push to RTO from all industries/locations.
