This https://www.macrumors.com/2024/05/17/ios-17-5-bug-wiped-devices-photos-resurfacing/ is kinda bad, but it's probably NOT actually a bug anymore - it's probably only happening now because they fixed the original bug that prevented the originals from actually being deleted in the first place.

At least... I hope so!

They really need to comment on this, though.

Edit: Okay, I mean, obviously it's still a bad bug, but maybe it's on the server side now. Which is especially bad. But they could fix without an update.

They need to comment on this.

WagesOf,

@bigzaphod so their fix will be that you can't wipe and transfer any ios or ipados device between accounts.

Ever purchase something again because you swear you lost it and you swear you looked everywhere 5 times?

… only to buy it again and find the original a short time later?!

Why the hell can't I have a setting option in the feed to turn off shorts and turn of already viewed suggestions?

How is this not a violation of Trump's gag order:

“in court yesterday, actually, I was sitting close enough that I could look over Trump’s shoulder and see what he was reading. at one point, he was actually reading the quotes that these individuals were— and going through and making notations with a pen, on the paper, while testimony was going on. while Michael Cohen was testifying against him, he was actually going through and editing and annotating the quotes.”

WagesOf,

@darwinwoodka it became a violation as soon as he referred to them as surrogates.

He admitted they're acting on his behalf before they uttered the first word.

Ran into google's new LLM search answering system today; first time I've seen it so far, which I guess is impressive?

I did some poking and it seems like specific keyword searches - especially esoteric or technical ones - tend to not get LLM-generated answers, while "can you..." "how do you..." "does a..." "what is the..." questions do.

Which I guess makes sense; the goal appears to be to distill the hundreds of questionable link farm "answer" sites into a single (questionable?) answer 😅

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@tess the funny thing is is that we only need an LLM engine to sort through the millions of trash copies of the same old forum posts and buried recipe sites because Google has completely broken the web by allowing feeding SEO back onto its own search.

Never ceases to stump me that we have the technology to kill 99.95% of airborne viruses, proven to work, non-invasive, cheap to deploy and install, and is produced at scale already and we just like - collectively - kind of just don't really use it.

HEPA-grade air filtration is proven, cheap, and makes everyone's lives strictly better. It, like, makes zero fiscal sense for governments not to mandate its use in all covered public spaces ASAP.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@yosh your assertion that it's cheap is wrong.

We don't mandate HEPA filters because it's a massive cost and doesn't actually stop virus spread in itself.

Nano particle level filtration is insanely expensive and you'd need to change the air completely every few minutes to even have a chance to make a dent at all.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@yosh you're wrong, but whatever.

It's always a good day when your solar panels generate more power than you use, resulting in negative grid usage 😁

The electric company won't pay me for it but anything I put into the grid I don't have to pay for when I take it back out later.

'A step back in time': America's Catholic Church sees immense shift twd the old ways

“Generations of Catholics who embraced modernizing tide sparked in 1960s by Vatican II are increasingly giving way to religious conservatives who believe church has been twisted by change…

..molded by plummeting church attendance…reshaped parishes across the country, leaving them at odds w Pope Francis and much of the Catholic world.”

My credit score dropped when I paid off my car.

My credit score dropped when I paid off my student loans.

The system punishes you for not owing any money.

They told me: "You should get more loans to increase your credit score."

The system is predatory and wants you to be in debt.

Credit scores are one of the biggest scams.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@FluentInFinance amazingly enough I have no debt at all and an 800+ credit score.

Which would be impossible if what you're saying is true.

But you obviously have no clue how credit scores are calculated. They are forced, by law, to publish how they're calculated and what inputs they're basing your specific score on.

Your ignorance is your fault.

Stop spreading it around.

Amazon Prime Video subscribers are about to see even more ads. In January, viewers who didn't pay an additional $3 a month started to see commercials. Now, Amazon has announced that it's adding what it describes as shoppable carousel ads, interactive pause ads and interactive brand trivia ads. Here's more from Ars Technica. We want to know, have you, or will you ditch streaming services as they start to add commercials?

A new study from Microsoft and LinkedIn has found that AI usage in the workplace has doubled in the last six months.

The data comes from a survey completed by 31,000 people across 31 countries, which found that 75% of workers are now using AI as part of their jobs. Over half are using it for their most important tasks, but don't want to admit it out of fear it makes them look replaceable. Here’s more from CNBC.
