On the bus to the start of the Helderberg to Hudson Half Marathon. Too late to back out now!

Of these ways of learning, which is best for you?

splicer,

@evan I don’t know. I’ve assumed that you want the longer-form answers that go beyond the checkbox and have intentionally crafted your polls not to have easy, clear, mutually-exclusive choices. I’ve been taking them as writing prompts to take a paragraph or two explaining why it’s a hard choice, or clarifying my assumptions about the meaning of the question.

Puce, apricot, chartreuse, and mauve, by the way, are all the tools of oppression. Selecting one would make me complicit.

"What caused the Civil War?" is kind of an wild thing to ask a presidential candidate, though.

splicer,

@evan The scope of the question matters. For me right now at this point in history, “slavery” isn’t as relevant as “a bunch of racists decided they’d rather kill their fellow Americans than abide by the results of a presidential election.”

But yeah. They didn’t want Abe in the White House because they wanted to keep slavery, so it keeps coming back to slavery. Same with “disagreement about the balance of State and Federal power”. They wanted more power for the States to keep slavery.

I just did something even many marathoners have never done. I did 26.2 miles without getting a finishers medal, t-shirt, or swag bag. 5h 55m so I would have made it before the cutoff of many actual races. I proved I can do it

splicer, to running

23 mile run today. 60-30 sec run/walk intervals, finished under five hours. This shows that theoretically I can do a 6hr marathon. If I had to walk the last three miles I’d have an hour to do it.

That said, I already reached what felt like an absolute limit today, breathing very hard and running HR up to 191 bpm just to do an 11 min/mi pace on the run intervals. Don’t think I could’ve walked three miles.

I don’t have a marathon on the calendar so plenty of time for improvement.

The term “double-edged sword” should be replaced with “double-sided sword” because as you wield it you’re also cutting yourself, constantly…

splicer,

@rasterweb "Un-hilted" just doesn't have a good ring to it.

Very strange. Taken delivery of some new USB-C cables. But they don't work with HDMI.

My USB-C port supports HDMI.
My USB-C dock supports HDMI.
A different brand of cable carries video from laptop->dock->monitor.

These new cables carry data, they max out my broadband (330MBps), they do PowerDelivery.

But not video!

Is this a problem with the cable itself, or something else? Any way to test them?

(Not here for your hot takes on , , or . Actually looking for advice.)

splicer,

@Edent I don’t know the nitty gritty details but in order to carry video a cable has to be called of “USB-C Alternate Mode” which is sometimes called “DisplayPort Alt Mode”. I assume that just as there’s extra components in power-delivery cables that signal what capabilities the cable has that there is something in the cable that indicates that the cable is video compatible. Or it might be that you can’t use HDMI without HDCP. @andypiper

“Oh, I know! I’ll get all of these ink bottles off my desk by getting a floating shelf to put them on.”

“Hmm. These shelves I like are sold in pairs. Ah, that’s OK I’ll do two rows and put something else on the upper shelf.”

I may have underestimated the number of ink bottles I have.

splicer,

@paradoxmo I like those risers! For now I’m OK. I actually did fit all the bottles, just barely. But that includes some empty bottles for mixing so I can store those somewhere else when I buy more inks.

All right, for the next 5 days I'm doing a big multi-bracket poll on the directions of a 16-point compass rose.

I scrambled the directions so they're not all clumped up.

Here are the brackets:

Southeast
South-Southeast
East
East-Northeast

East-Southeast
Northwest
Southwest
South-Southwest

North
West
West-Southwest
North-Northwest

North-Northeast
West-Northwest
Northeast
South

On the fifth day, I'll run a poll on the winners of each bracket.

splicer,

@evan I don't know a hawk from a handsaw in any of those directions.

"Don't speak ill of the dead."

splicer,

@evan I didn't see this in time to vote. I had three thoughts:

  1. Death is when a lot of faults no longer matter. Some do, but for most people there isn't any point in discussing what won't ever change.

  2. As a general rule, one ought not speak ill of the living either. There are times when one should, both of the living and the dead. But aphorisms tend to be generalizations.

  3. The dead aren't around to defend themselves. It's sort of the ultimate form of talking behind someone's back.

Wire should be on spools. Thanks to 3D printed spool ends and a dog poop bag roll core, this red 14AWG stranded has a home.

Fifteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that. 🫤

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

Someday soon-ish I'd like to have identi.ca working with ActivityPub. When I get the time for it!

splicer,

@evan If I’d known that you would have plans to make Pump do ActivityPub I’d have kept Awkwardly Social as a Pump site and offered my time and energy to make it happen. It wasn’t a task I was willing to take on by myself. I guess it makes me a bit of a jerk to tell you that now, not having a stake in Pump anymore.

What's the best way to watch a television series?

splicer,

@aeva Funny, I’m sort of the opposite. If I watch one episode of a show and it gives me all the hooks to pull me in I usually find those aren’t the shows I find compelling. It’s the shows where I need to watch the first three or four episodes to understand what it’s all about that, in the end, I find more appealing. The slow burn gets me more than the quick hit. @evan

My personal Linux desktop environment tier list after two years of #DistroHopping, based on overall friendliness and ease of customization:

  1. Cinnamon
  2. GNOME
  3. Xfce
  4. KDE
  5. Pantheon

What’s yours?

@RockyC Raspberry Pi Desktop, but I get why it might not qualify as a (mainstream) desktop environment.
