    @osma my personal experience is a certain caution after the hype. So no roll out of"general" AI.

    Expert systems are pushed though. But this more specialised AI, though transformative, is not "new".

    I have the impression though that some department heads fail to see the distinction between LLMs posing as expert systems and true expert systems.

    Share of energy from renewable sources in 2022 (%):

    🇸🇪 66 🇫🇮 47.9 🇱🇻 43.3 🇩🇰 41.6
    🇪🇪 38.5 🇵🇹 34.7 🇦🇹 33.8 🇱🇹 29.6
    🇭🇷 29.4 🇷🇴 24.1 🇪🇺 23 🇸🇮 22.9

    🇱🇺 14.4 🇧🇪 13.8 🇲🇹 13.4 🇮🇪 13.1

    This is the way to go, but we must accelerate to meet our 2030 renewable energy target of at least 42.5%.

    To achieve it – among others – we sped up permitting procedures for projects on renewable energy and proposed a Wind Power Action Plan.

    @kravietz @notsoloud @elpolacodesplegado @EU_Commission as said before (and I don't tire about it):

    Germany's problem is not renewables. But coal. Especially lignite.

    Germany has plenty of space for renewables.

    But what does Germany have in abundance?
    Lobby groups for coal. From mining companies, to suppliers, and miner unions.

    All having a vested interest in keeping coal running for as long as possible.

    The problem is that Germany decided to get rid of nuclear before getting rid of coal.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @dynode @kravietz @notsoloud @elpolacodesplegado @EU_Commission well. Yeah. Lignite love has to come from somewhere.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @kravietz @notsoloud @elpolacodesplegado @dynode @EU_Commission is this also taking dual use of the land into account?

    I know no onshore wind farm that is not dual use (agriculture) or on land not suitable for anything else (on the side of the Autobahn or on top of a landfill).

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @kravietz @notsoloud @elpolacodesplegado @dynode @EU_Commission this is just anecdotal evidence.

    What about the real numbers. If you take just the spacing between the wind turbines and declare it all a wind power plant, sure you have a really high land use.

    But if you take the land between the turbines and use it for something else (like farming), the numbers should differ.

    These make up the majority (if not all) of the onshore wind farms in continental northwestern Europe (NL, N GER, DK).

    Is it incredible that it's 737 Max that is now in headlines for unsafe door panels, when it was the same model five years ago in headlines for unsafe autopilot?

    No. There is nothing incredible about an aircraft model that is not an improved revision of its predecessor, but in fact a completely reworked aircraft, that was allowed to skip recertification for essentially fraudulent motivations, turning out to be unsafe to fly.

    That's entirely credible. Expected, really.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @osma on a side note: since Spirit is producing also for Airbus it kind of makes sense from a legal, especially Anti-Trust point of view, to have them as a separate legal entity.

    The question is as always: how independent are they really? Are they a 100% subsidiary?

    We have one 100 % subsidiary that's also producing for our competition. We treat them as a third party basically (only that their earnings show up in our balance sheet).

    @osma @mmasnick for me as a patent attorney it will be interesting to see how it develops.

    Personally I think generative AI companies might lose on some points. It's the output that matters, not the input though. And most of these lawsuits demonstrate that poorly.

    And what also matters is who is doing the copyright infringement for what purpose. So even if OpenAI is infringing a copyright, it matters whether this infringement was made public and was monetized in some way.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @osma @mmasnick yes. And this one thing I hold against them.

    IMO there should be at least a safeguard in the bot.

    E.g. If you ask him to write something that sounds like a contemporary author, the bot should simply refuse.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @osma @mmasnick depends on the imitation.

    If you tell ChatGTP to write the next GoT book in the style of HRR Martin, you are in trouble.

    If you tell ChatGTP to write a cook book in style of Jamie Oliver, you are in trouble.

    If you tell ChatGTP to write the next GoT book in style of Jamie Oliver, you should be safe.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @osma @mmasnick the point is always whether it was used for profit.

    If done not for profit you are safe most of the time.

    But when you make money out of it, it's getting into the realm of copyright infringement really, really quickly.

    I am seeing a lot of videos of Ukrainian soldiers moving into battle carrying what looks to me as AK-74 assault rifles invented in 1974.

    I am aware, it is reliable, but I cannot help wonder, why these soldiers are not given state of the art, effective rifles with modern scopes, silencers, etc.

    We can always build another tank or another missile, but every time Ukraine loses a soldier, that soldier is gone for good.

    Does anyone know, why this is not a priority?

    @anderspuck perhaps?

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @DeeGLloyd @randahl @anderspuck

    As long as these AKs were stored in reasonable conditions, they should be OK.

    What type of troops are using these? Even without all the gear they should be sufficient to hold the line or to perform rear guard duties. Or go on an assault .

    We all are still a bit spoiled from video games and images from the gwot.

    AR-15 was invented in the 50s btw. And Israeli reserve units are still using M4 which is a derivative.

    This week, both Blinken and Stoltenberg reiterated the notion that has already lost in because they failed to achieve their original goals.
    This is the kind of dangerous narrative that I talk about in this video. We have to stop talking about the war in terms where it sounds like Ukraine has already won.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @anderspuck russia cannot win if we keep supporting Ukraine.

    But once we stop, they can. Especially since stopping the aid would lead to cracks in the Western alliances.

    E.g. why would and should Europe support the US on China if the US doesn't support us on russia? Would the US come to Poland's aid? Would Germany muster the will to oppose russia in the Baltics without American support?

    A new video by @anderspuck

    This time about the rationale behind the russian human wave attacks.

    This video highlights to me one core problem of war studies and IR: we (and e.g. russia) only have imperfect assessments on the thought process and values of our opposition.

    What makes sense to us doesn't need to make sense to them. And the larger this discrepancy the larger the room for misunderstandings and errors.

    E.g. we thought they would freeze the conflict...
