It's a completely consistent outcome of the Effective Altruism and Longtermism ideologies that current workers' and stakeholders' injuries don't matter in light of potential benefits for future unborn descendants and uninvented sentient algorithms.

It's a total coincidence that this policy also creates immediate financial benefits to the current shareholders.

@osma what astonishes me most is that some people actually believe in both of these theories.

And that's why this scam is quite successful among a certain demographic. It lets them do whatever they want and they believe they are doing "good".

t_mkdf,
@t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

@kravietz @Ruth_Mottram yes. Especially since countries like Denmark and many states in Germany have agricultural business models (industrial pig farming...) that would profit from Ukraine in the EU and lower prices for fattening feed.

t_mkdf,
@t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

@kravietz @Ruth_Mottram yeah.

Food security is IMO one of main reasons for the established long term funding of Ukraine by Germany.

This is also one thing to keep in mind. German political establishment is less concerned about T-72s on the Elbe. But quite a lot about food security from the 2040s onwards...

t_mkdf,
@t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

@voron @Ruth_Mottram @kravietz and back to the topic:

It's all in the view of regional, national and European interests in a web of dependencies.

So Ukraine might get the support from Germany and the EU that it needs. Polish security concerns will be taken more seriously. But Polish farmers might be thrown under the bus.

In general I don't mind being a mortal creature with a short time on the Earth, but it bugs me that I'll probably die not knowing whether human civilization is going to survive climate change or not. It feels like dying in 1941 not knowing how the war would end.

@Loukas well. If our civilization does not survive the climate catastrophe it is our civilization's fault and should not bother you too much.

    Russia has a year's head start on the realization that the war in Ukraine will take a long time. In Ukraine and the West there were very big hopes invested in the summer offensive, and I largely see the current debate about war fatigue as an expression of the renegotiation that must take place in light of the disappointing results.

    @anderspuck I have the impression that the Europeans reached this conclusion already in the first half of this year. German and European funding for Ukraine seems to account for a long war.

    And the US- I suppose that if it weren't for the GOP and their clown show long term funding would have already been secured.

    And for strategic goals: I suppose the stalemate is exactly what some Western strategists wanted. But now they have to make sure that it stays that way...

    This new article from TIME about Zelensky’s struggle to maintain Western support and about Ukraine’s eroding military capacity is one of the most damning, depressing things I’ve read about the war for some time.

    https://time.com/6329188/ukraine-volodymyr-zelensky-interview/

    Some key points: Zelensky’s own aides say he’s “deluded” about the prospects for victory. His confidence “verges on messianic.” The public is still with him, but perhaps (this is my observation) that’s partly because he’s failed to prepare them for more realistic outcomes.

    Meanwhile, some front-line commanders have started refusing direct presidential orders to advance — partly due to equipment shortages (ie, “the West is to blame”), but a personnel shortage has become even more dire. The average Ukrainian soldier is now 43 years old. Good Lord.

    Corruption in the govt & military cripples the war effort and scares off Western aid (or gives allies an excuse to disengage, according to an increasingly resentful Zelensky). With these stakes, corruption isn’t declining at all. “People are stealing like there’s no tomorrow.”

    To cap it all off, Israel’s invasion of Gaza only diverts Western attention further. The whole story paints a very, very grim picture of Ukraine’s prospects.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @kevinrothrock @aliide War is politics after all.

    All wars end in settlements is true. Even unconditional surrender is a settlement.

    The question is what kind of settlement will and can be reached. And both sides seem to have unrealistic goals in my opinion.

    t_mkdf,
    @t_mkdf@ruhr.social avatar

    @kevinrothrock what is overlooked in view of Israel and Gaza and it's relationship to Ukraine:

    Public opinion of Israel's actions is already low.

    I don't see any political will in Europe to divert support from Ukraine to Israel either.

    And Europe is now much more important for actual support for Ukraine than the US.

    @osma @randahl I believe it's both.

    There are some that think that "boiling the frog" is the right strategy. And others that don't want to allocate too much resources towards Ukraine.

    Thus this strategy is supported by the ones that want to cause the most long term damage to russia. And the ones who want to cause as little as possible.
