Ugh I was just a bit rude to a charity cold caller and I feel slightly ashamed. But I really wish they wouldn't call. How can you trust them not to be scammers anyway?

timrichards,

@augustusbrown Unfortunately charities are exempt from the register

Today's complaints from work (so far).

  1. Someone who bought a different brand of car because the brand I work doesn't make a minivan, and wants the brand I work to pay half his car payments since he had to go elsewhere.

  2. Someone who was asked for her phone number when she dropped her car in for servicing and is deeply offended that she has to hand over her personal information like that. Presumably she was expecting to find out when her car was ready via ESP.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@frogglin What does that second person think phones are for?

When historians look back on the fall of Western Civilization, I predict a major turning point will be when people started watching strangers react to videos the people had already seen, followed closely, of course, by kids watching videos of other kids playing video games, and finally by those who watch people open boxes of things they’ve purchased.

Good read. Netanyahu was already trying to sideline the courts before this brutal war, he doesn't have much use for democracy.

Cars have gotten so stupid. So expensive. So overbuilt. It’s insanity.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@davidtoddmccarty Happy I live somewhere I can do without one. Still have to deal with those ridiculous huge SUV/trucks on local streets, though.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@davidtoddmccarty I've been thinking some of the country towns here should consider adding low-rise apartment buildings to their town centres. Would be nice to live somewhere like that without a car.

Boarding the 🇦🇺 at Central. The train is almost 30 cars long. The 4,352 km long journey to , on the other end of , will last 65 hours they say. Plenty of mileage ahead then. And what a beautiful train!

@tml @andreaswiedenhoff The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin sometimes gets longer, up to 37 carriages - almost 1km long.

There has been a surge in the no of pretty good Korean places in San Francisco. I don’t love going to the west side and I don’t love most of the Korean restaurants there (other than Muguboka). I tend to just pop into Oakland for Korean food.

But now, three pretty good ones near me: Yasijang, Sikdang Woori and Mashita Galbi Jjim

(I like one where you stand in line for an hour, but I’ve never felt like standing in line for an hour.)

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@skinnylatte I will do anything to avoid queuing at restaurants; eg we'll visit a hot new place at 3.45pm on a Tuesday to dine without lining up. :)

#Sydney’s 🇦🇺 commuter network is not only land-based: a range of passenger ferry lines are serving neighbourhoods bordering the harbour. And the fine catamarans operating on these waterborne routes provide some nice sightseeing opportunities. 😊

I find the vast majority of yogurt products in American grocery stores to be totally inedible, except the stuff made by immigrants and sold at immigrant markets (desi yogurt, or Lebanese or Turkish labneh). Way too much sugar, or hype, sometimes both. My stomach also does better with the dairy from immigrant markets.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@skinnylatte "Way too much sugar" describes the majority of American foodstuffs, right? ;)

@jamesbannan Just rock up. Same transport card (Myki) as used in Melbourne. Though once you get beyond 2 hours (or so) from Melbourne there are long-distance trains you need to buy a ticket for.

Early morning sees quite a number of #InterCity services coming and going to and from #Sydney 🇦🇺 Central. These services are usually worked by very nice trainsets that look familiar to the British traveller: their design is very close to the #InterCity125 #HST.
