@rgarner @tosbourn I've started playing these games with high charisma and more specifically with FO4 being drunk the whole time to get extra charisma.

Starting conversations with slurred words never gets old.

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@tosbourn @rgarner Eventually I plan to give New Vegas and Outer Worlds a second try. I always thought they were like the Bethesda games and all about exploration but OW seems to be more about actual role playing and leaning into your build.

Another db question! I'm using migration files whenever I make a change to the db. When I'm doing dev, whats a good source of truth for the current structure of the tables (column names, types and so on)? I could app switch to my db admin app but I'd prefer a quick way to reference inside VS Code

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman Are you using an ORM? Lots of them spit out some kind of schema file which has the full reference of your DB.

Shamefully giving up on . I just haven't had the time at all to write anything. Deleting my post and jealous of others who kept up.

@hungryjoe Might write a few more posts this month but I see people posting "Day 8" and I managed 2.

From an artist's point of view, is there any difference between you buying a donated CD from a charity shop and downloading pirated music from a torrent site?

Neither gives the artists, songwriters, producers, publishers, or distributors any money.

Neither reports to a charts authority to show popularity.

Both have the same impact on secondary revenue like gig tickets & merchandise.

Vote now - and please show your workings.

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent This is also why game publishers hated pre-owned game sales.

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke In Ireland, we speak Hiberno-English -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiberno-English

I always describe it as being English words with Irish grammar. Irish has a different sentence structure which comes through sometimes. Instead of saying "I am sad" the translated version is "There is sadness on me". This doesn't come through that often but in Ireland if you're hungover you might say "There is an awful head on me this morning".

I love that post-colonial nations have made British words their own.

For any Elixir devs out there - my new job is hiring Full Stack Elixir people. LiveView and Tailwind experience a bonus but not required.

  • 4.5 day week
  • fully remote
  • distributed team but some overlap with EU timezones is desirable
  • good money
  • expenses for co-working, training, books, etc
  • twice a year in person meetups

Is this you? Let's talk. And if not, a retoot would be appreciated.

@sdw The way Las Vegas throws away water at a place in the middle of the dessert is pretty reminiscent of Arakeen in the books.

I was an early supporter of Cuckoo Broadband and just got told that they're selling up their copper line customers. I guess it's time to find a new ISP. What's good and not anti-Consumer like Virgin Media, etc?

Is "American Jewish English" evolving into a new language?

Based on my experience, yes. If you speak to many American Jews, what emerges is something that's not intelligible with standard English.

This excellent talk by linguist Sarah Benor confirms what I've long believed.

It’s weird how people that tend to be into PlayStation and Xbox games have little nostalgia for PS2 and the original Xbox.

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I'm into both and I have a huge amount of nostalgia. If people don't, I wonder is it the obfuscation of preservation that plays an impact. When a new PC gamer hears about Deus Ex, it's easy for them to see what all the fuss was about. Unless console games get a re-release the backwards compatibility can be buggy or non-existent.

If a website has an RSS feed, email newsletter, and a social media account (in the fediverse, of course), and they all post the same exact content, for the sake of an argument, do you typically prefer:

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan I picked RSS because I like reading it in my own time. I ignore emails that aren't important and then I just won't see it.

I also despise the culture of always prompting on a website to subscribe to a newsletter.

matthiasott, to accessibility
@matthiasott@mastodon.social avatar

I just got asked a very interesting question: let’s say you want to create a really stunning website and part of that is that you change the mouse cursor to various custom cursors, like arrows, pointers, crosses, buttons, whatever, when you move it around or hover over things.

How can you make sure the website is still accessible? Given the website is still fully keyboard-accessible, is there anything particular to consider – like fallbacks, user-specific settings, etc? 🤔

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott I can only think of adding a toggle to turn this stuff off. Like using prefers-reduced-motion would stop animation?

Finally watched “Room 237”, and although very interesting, I think they’re really reaching on some of their ideas for what the film was about.

tommyp,
@tommyp@mastodon.social avatar

@pixel It definitely could've done with cutting a few sections.

I showed it to my partner who is a massive Shining fan when we were snowed in while staying at an Icelandic hotel, which would've been the perfect environment for it, but the Apollo landing stuff caused her to want it turned off.
