So, the so-called Bionic Reading (https://bionic-reading.com/) got some independent testing and … appears to not do a damn thing.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001691824001811

Unsurprising. A LOT of supposed breakthroughs in reading (including, but not only, dyslexic reading) turn out to be contradicted by available evidence.

The things that DO work are generally achievable with adjustments in font choice (from among normal fonts) or in typesetting (with normal typesetting variables, not “weird secrets”).

It’s even worse than you think.

You can’t close your account without logging in. And they won’t let you finish logging in without giving them tons more personal information.

It's official. After 3 months of back and forth, a major medical provider has elected to drop me as a patient for not having a Google or Apple device.

It is unclear if this is legal, but it is very clearly discriminatory and unethical.

Any tech journalists or lawyers interested interested in this?

I would like to do anything I can to ensure this never happens to anyone else.

tphinney,
@tphinney@typo.social avatar

@Jennifer @lrvick I am imagining that the org is using some kind of patient service system that (1) is required, and (2) only works on iOS and Android, but has no web option. (Or if it does, they are not using it.)

I know this is an extremely niche post and only a few people will know or even care, but HOW can the world’s best watch company, Patek Philippe, make amazing watches with incredible technical prowess and then just phone it in on the typography on the dial?!

Truly the most 🤢 watch dial in my opinion and an affront to their entire catalogue of beautiful watches.

Patek Philippe World Time 5231G Enamel Dial 18K White Gold watch with very boring and possibly artificially condensed all-caps serif type.
Patek Philippe World Time 5231J Enamel Dial 18K Yellow Gold watch with ugly typography around the dial.
A green Patek Philippe World Time 5930P Chronograph Platinum Green Dial watch with cheap-looking, san-serif typography.

@onpaperwings @armstrong Closer to Monotype Corsiva (itself a Zapf Chancery substitute/space-alike) than Zapf Chancery. But still has a different R for one thing....

@FontsInUse @tphinney @onpaperwings @armstrong ah of course. Should have thought of that

This is just so darn clever. Whoever invented this innovative “Texture Healing” approach to more legible monospaced fonts is the most awesomest. (Also a great example of OpenType contextual layout coding.)

This online version of the Fontbakery font-testing tool is super useful to font developers and even mildly technical type designers.

http://fontbakery.com/

Installing and using the command-line version is a bit of a pain. Love the web version!

This tool was developed by Google Fonts with input especially from Adobe, and also Font Bureau, Type Network, Fontwerk and many individual type designers and type tech folks.

Well, another step towards the future in which AI generation of fonts is a thing. https://serce.me/posts/02-10-2023-hey-computer-make-me-a-font
This is initially limited, but most of the limitations are directly to indirectly about memory and computing power. If you had enough to throw at it, this could be adapted to generate full fonts. Quality is another question, of course… and a critical one.

I saw a WaPo headline about current interest rates being “high” and wondered WTF they were talking about.

Turns out it all depends on your perspective. Past 20 years? Yes, 5% is high. Past 50 years? Not so much.

tphinney,
@tphinney@typo.social avatar

@onpaperwings Your implication is well founded. Home ownership in the US went down noticeably in the early 80s—although nowhere near the crash it took from ~ 2007-2016.

tphinney,
@tphinney@typo.social avatar

@glennf @onpaperwings It's true, inflation in general was higher — as were wage increases. Although of course those were not evenly distributed. :/

Even if CNET’s SEO experts have figured out a Google hack by deleting 1,000s of old articles, the hack won’t last for long, particularly since Google denies it exists and thus if they find out how it works will clearly remove it. In the meantime, CNET has devalued its writers, editors, and history itself. The marginal improvement in revenue must be shockingly low—but experts have to justify why you're paying them.

tphinney,
@tphinney@typo.social avatar

@glennf Oh noes! Details? (Like: how recent, and did they just delete everything older than a certain date or what?)

My spouse got me this ice cream, knowing my decades-long interest in durian without having eaten one. (People I’ve met from Malaysian who love durian have said if you don’t get it fresh, it’s not great.) The ice cream smells kind of awful, as anticipated. But once you get down a little where the fruit is mixed in, wowwwweee. Amazing.

    @scott Any brand at all? Or just Huy Fong?

    Have you tried Sky Valley for sambal oelek?

    I quite like their sriracha, the only one I have liked as much as Huy Fong’s. Has a slightly more smoky flavor, perhaps a bit less vinegar.

    @scott I see it on Amazon. Good luck—and let me know what you think of it. (I’m too overstocked on hot sauces and the like to try anything new for a bit.)

    I am trying to decide to where I should migrate my best content from Quora. I have a bunch of answers there, some refined over time. I could make them blog posts on my own blog (thomasphinney.com, desperately needs a refresh but I could do that too).

    Any other ideas? I could post on Medium, but somebody else’s site seems like a bad idea. The whole reason I am leaving Quora is because they are making decisions that are bad for me.
