Assuming Evernote is really dead and assuming I need a note taking app with a browser access that is useable on Macs, Ipads and Android phones, what shall I use?

I like the idea of obsidian, but the lack of online access is prohibitive. I mainly create my notes as pure text files, sometimes with attached images, almost never PDFs. Image annotation is a plus, PDF annotation I can live without. Good search function is crucial. Tags a plus. Evernote notes Import a must.

Am I sad to see astro folks move to bluesky? Yes I am.

But also at the moment I feel too burned by corporate stuff (like not just twitter, but also instagram, even for a simple private user who is interested exclusively in food pics and cute pet videos ...) to follow.

Not that it's perfect here, but I'll be sticking around for a while longer, I guess.

Want to know what my research is about? Follow this thread 🧵 based on a 10min talk I've drawn for a meeting.

The talk was aimed at non-specialist space science colleagues (not the general public!). The slides were built up step by step, but I'm omitting this here & showing only the final graphs, less this becomes a 34-part thread. 11 is plenty enough!

So: "Understanding Winds of Massive Stars Using High Mass X-ray Binaries"

People post because they want to vent, to share their frustration, to make others laugh or shake heads. If ppl post to get advice, they usually ask.

So: You want to give advice?

Has the person explicitly asked for it? No? Then don't.

But you really, really want to give advice! Still: no!

But your advice is really relevant! Still: no.

But you also know the person well (you follow them & they you & you interacted): ask if they want advice. If they don't explicitly say yes - it's still a no.

Well, that's a new one: did you know that states this about their peer review?

"When a manuscript is accepted for publication, the names of the reviewers who endorsed its publication appear on the published article, without exceptions."
(from: https://www.frontiersin.org/about/peer-review)

So this is a hard no on principle. (I'm not worried about myself but I am very much worried about retaliations towards younger and/or more vulnerable folks reviewing for them.)

Ahem... 📢

Dear ppl - please do not repost stuff from accounts such as "amazing science", "wonders of science/nature", etc. OR posts that use these accounts as sources.

They are spoofers, stealing artwork without attribution, often misrepresenting highly photoshopped (or fully artificial) images as real and not so seldomly posting absolutely bogus explanations.

Nature is beautiful - it does not need Photoshop or wrong explanations to make it sound more sensational.

No, I cannot rank this student among their class (I have not taught classes at this institution!) & I cannot compare them as "2nd in 10"or similar among the master students I supervised: I supervised folks at three different institutions & systems in two different countries plus every one has their strength and weaknesses, there is no order from best to worst.

My reference letter will tell you nothing and you are wasting everyone's time because of your stupid form 😬

1/16 This July, I gave an invited talk in the "Communicating Science Through Art" session at the European Astronomical Society annual meeting, organized by the amazing @theastrophoenix . And I thought it may be something that would also interest you folks.

The aim of the talk was partly to give people insight into my why & how of my art. But mainly to encourage others to just try. In a very subjective manner.

A thread: 🧵

I am trying to re-create an old talk from ~4 years ago I found in my archives and I simultaneously love past-me (she did such a great job developing a talk structure, much better than the one I had in mind when asked to give a talk on this topic a month ago!) and hate her (she somehow managed to deleted the keynote of the talk so that I am now stuck with a PDF and trying to find all figures & re-type the text ...).

I made it to Restaurant Ernst in Berlin today - folks, everything I heard about it got topped by the real experience.

I will not call it best because there is no way to compare Vermeer to Van Gogh or El Greco to Mucha, they are too different - but it's definitely among my absolute recommendations.

I had the full menu (their only option) + the non-alcoholic pairing. Wanna come along?

(P.S. Folks, remember, I block ruthlessly if you poop on my party.)

I do love British English spelling, but "disc" just looks wrong, my brain can't deal with it 🙄

(How often this word shows up? Constantly. Given how I am working on accretion processes in black holes & neutron stars ...)

The last two things I loved watching were "Sense 8" and "She Ra" (this one following a recommendation here in the !)

What would you recommend me to watch next based on the above?

Old stuff welcome, I likely haven't watched it - I want perhaps one episode every two weeks or so on average. Has to be available in some way in the Netherlands in English or German. Finished series preferred.

(Things I definitely dislike: romcoms and comedy.)

So, as far as I understand, mastodon social implements some of the beta features that are not fully rolled out. How am I to give feedback on them? (Preferably without actually activating my super old unused github account - FYI, yes, I know how to use git but work on a local gitlab installation).

Because I'm really unhappy about the way the replies work in the browser on mobile (I need to see the whole post I reply to, not just the first few lines!)
