A great development for the family of , as far as Iā€™m aware this is the first time they have received compensation for the theft of her cells in the 1950ā€™s.

Beyond the obvious mistreatment and exploitation of a Black woman, the story of raises very critical (and unresolved) questions about ownership and rights to your own ā€œmedical waste,ā€ as itā€™s called.

Companies have made billions using her HeLa cells for research, including the development of vaccines and production of biological drugs. (Even Iā€™ve used HeLa cells in my career, not then knowing Henriettaā€™s story Iā€™m embarrassed to say). But monetization of medical waste happens to this day, and the law doesnā€™t currently entitle you to a share of that money. Itā€™s a glaring problem that needs legislation to address.

Read the book about her, ā€œThe Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.ā€ itā€™s well worth your time.

wesleybond,

@crooksandliars Too late, it already is. I think it has been effectively meaningless ever since Bill Clinton.

Know how I know your company is profiting from massive copyright infringement? https://tech.lgbt/@gourdcaptain/110438098226129235

wesleybond,

@drahardja šŸ˜‚ Um, so itā€™s only wrong if you admit youā€™re doing it? Oh waitā€¦

Climatologists have said for many years that will reach ā€œtipping pointsā€ where abrupt and rapid changes to our climate will occur. I canā€™t help but think this weekā€™s news is somehow related..

I think defederating Threads is a huge missed opportunity for Mastodon to grow.

Imagine interacting with their users and letting them know that: you scroll posts without ads, your timeline is in chronological order, your client doesnā€™t spy on you, you only see what you want and no other content is pushed to your timeline, etcā€¦

if I was a Threads users, I would move to Mastodon as soon as I find out šŸ™‚

wesleybond,

@happyborg @andreagrandi I would worry about a culture shift too, but I donā€™t think would be as vulnerable to this as you might think based on how it works. Here your feed isnā€™t filled with ā€œtrendingā€ posts and content an algorithm selects for you the way the bird place and work. Thatā€™s in my mind the biggest strength of the platform. So the only way youā€™d be exposed to those cultural groups would be to follow those users/hashtags. And we have the power to block users and instances entirely on an individual basis, which gives us full control. Given this, I personally donā€™t see a lot of risk in federating.

wesleybond,

@happyborg @andreagrandi Just to speak for myself, I suppose what I see as the value in federating is mostly selfish. There are people in my personal social network of friends/family as well as key figures in my interest area (mainly scientists and certain journalists) that arenā€™t in the and probably wonā€™t be, and Iā€™d personally enjoy having the ability to see and interact with them if they are only willing to use or whatever. To me itā€™s about access to a larger network, not growth of the platform.

Itā€™s a hot day in Denver today! šŸŒ”ļøā˜€ļø Poor Remi needed a break in the shade on our trip to the park.

wesleybond,

@supernovae We've had a ridiculous amount of rain in Colorado this year, it's broken all kinds of records (and gotten my basement wet a couple times), so everything is super green. Not that I'm complaining, it's normally more like Austin here too šŸ˜„

Musk-owned Twitter stiffed employees on promised bonuses, class action says

Lawsuit: Workers relied on promise of bonus when opting to stay after Musk buyout.

wesleybond,

@arstechnica Serious question: why does anyone still work at Twitter? Iā€™m genuinely curious why they think itā€™s a good career move.
